Judy Blume When I was growing up, I dreamed about becoming a cowgirl, a detective, a spy, a great actress, or a ballerina. Not a dentist, like my father, or a homemaker, like my mother and certainly not a writer, although I always loved to read. I didn't know anything about writers. It never occurred to me they were regular people and that I could grow up to become one, even though I loved to make up stories inside my head.
I made up stories while I bounced a ball against the side of our house. I made up stories playing with paper dolls. And I made them up while I practiced the piano by pretending to give piano lessons. I even kept a notebook with the names of my pretend students and how they were doing. I always had an active imagination. But I never wrote down any of my stories. And I never told anyone about them.
When I grew up, my need for storytelling didn't go away. So when my own two children started preschool I began to write and I've been writing ever since! My characters live inside my head for a long time before I actually start a book about them. Then, they become so real to me I talk about them at the dinner table as if they are real. Some people consider this weird. But my family understands.
Many of my books are set in New Jersey because that's where I was born and raised. I lived there until my kids finished elementary school. Then we moved to New Mexico, the setting for

Judy Blume is the author who taught us about sex. She let us know that our changing bodies were normal. She shocked people when, in 1975, she wrote about a 17 year-old girl going on The Pill. She painfully chronicled a fifth-grade class turning against one student. She has acted as an expert on divorce, sibling-rivalry, and marriage. In short, she helped us learn about ourselves.
In a recent New York Times Book Review article, Mark Oppenheimer said, "When I got to college, there was no author, except Shakespeare, whom more of my peers had read." Judy Blume is a literary and cultural icon. With her latest book, Summer Sisters, she continues to produce insightful and sincere prose. The author we grew up with still writes our lives.

Haar eerste boek verscheen in 1969. Ze zit in verschillende schrijversverenigingen. Ze is een tegenstander van censuur, en zit zich daar ook actief voor in. Ze woont met haar derde man in New York. Boeken: Bent u daar God? Ik ben 't, Margaret

Autobiographical statement written for the Eighth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators, 2000: "I am a child of suburbia. I was born and grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I walked two blocks to my elementary school and came home for lunch every day. The walk to school was an adventure because when I was very young I was afraid of dogs. On most days my friend, Barry, and I walked together. He helped me feel more secure. "Along with my fears I always had a lot of imagination. My husband tells me I have too much, but I say a writer can never have too much imagination. From the time I was ten I'd bounce my pink rubber 'spaldeen' ball against the side of our brick house for hours while I made up stories inside my head. I never told anyone about my stories, and I never wrote them down, but from the time I can remember they were there. I was never bored because I had my stories to keep me company. "Back in New Jersey, I went to the only all-girls public high school in the state. We complained a lot about being separated from the boys, but I'm not so sure it wasn't a good experience. We ran the school! I was co-feature editor of the newspaper with my best friend, Mary Sullivan. I sang with the chorus, danced in the modern dance troupe, tried out for every school play and had great fun with my friends. How much did I learn at that school? Not enough. Only one or two teachers encouraged us to think for ourselves, which I consider the most important part of any education. Only a few challenged us intellectually. Those are the teachers I remember best, the ones I respect most.

19. Interview: Judy Blume

Judy Blume Boxed Set (Fudge-a-Mania, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge) by Judy Blume Published by Random House Buy it online Judy Blume and her husband George Cooper meet me at a chic tea room on Vancouver's west side. You know the kind of place: elegant, understated, quiet jazz piped through discreetly hidden speakers and the staff are quiet, unobtrusive and look as though chocolate wouldn't melt in their mouths. I've done many interviews in this same tearoom and never been paid any attention: "please" and "thank you" and "would you like more hot water?" Authors even really well-known ones seldom attract much attention.
And then there's Judy Blume. Near the end of our interview, one of the wait staff breaks away from the others, "Excuse me," she says. "Miss Blume. I'm sorry to intrude. It's just that I wanted to say how much your books have meant to me over the years."
Blume takes both of the girl's hands in her own and shakes them gently. "Thank you," she says. "That means so much to me." And all hell breaks loose. The quiet understated staff comprised of mostly young women crowd around: the elegant facade quite forgotten. They are not frightening, you understand. They are not demanding. What they want is to give something even if the something is emotion back to the woman they feel has given them so much.
