Rosellen Brown's bestseller deserves more. Her novel captures the struggle of an ordinary family and the murder that threatens to tear them apart. And unfortunately, director Barbet Schroeder's big-screen version of "Before and After" can't do the same. Carolyn, a doctor, and Ben Ryan, an artist, are your average parents. Mom comes home from the office each day to Dad and their kids, Jacob and Judith. All four sit around the dinner table and discuss their problems Mom had a headache at work that day, Dad couldn't come up with an idea for his sculpture, 17-year-old Jacob got a C on his algebra test and Judith got in a fight with her friends at recess. One day, their lives just stop moving. Martha Taverner, a girl in town, is found face down in the snow, dead. After her death, both Carolyn and Ben find out that, not only was Jacob dating her, but he was also the last to be seen with her, making him the key suspect in her murder. Jacob runs away from home and Carolyn and Ben must look beyond everything they know to find the truth. In the process, both parents must make their own decisions on how they might save their son.

    Brown, Rosellen Tender Mercies
On-Line Text and Audio Genre Novel (350 pp.) Keywords Body Self-Image Caregivers Catastrophe Disability ... Survival Summary This remarkable, absorbing novel is the story of a marriage and of catastrophe. Dan and Laura are a young couple from very different backgrounds who have two children. There is a terrible boating accident, caused by Dan's cavalier carelessness: Laura is severely injured and is rendered quadriplegic. The narrative skillfully weaves back and forth between Dan and Laura's earlier life, the nature of their relationship, and the present shocking realities of daily living; on-going unresolved guilt, anger, withdrawal and despair; and a gradual reconfiguration of the love and attraction that initially brought the pair together. The author pays unflinching attention to the details of physical incapacitation and how they must be dealt with, and the consequences for Dan as husband-caregiver as well as for Laura. At the same time we hear Laura's dream-like, poetic inner thoughtsa mind trapped in a useless body yet she seems to use her mind both as sense organ and limbs. "If Dan . . . ever touched me above my breasts where I edge towards feeling like ice thinning out . . . I would feel it everywhere. Memory is a muscle too if you work it."

Genre Short Story (15 pp.) Keywords Children Disability Family Relationships Illness and the Family ... Survival Summary Narrated in the form of journal entries, a mother struggles to cope with a hyperactive child and "its" disruptive effect on her daily life and household. Home and school and the walk between are the microcosm in which the story is set. She fluctuates between distancing herself from her sonhe is barely human"'It' is what races around my room at night, a bat, . . . One day she not only walks him to school but accompanies him to his classroom. She sees how the teacher has relegated him to the back of the room "for the special inattention of the aide"; then watches with horror as her son causes a multi-child collision and the children retaliate by stomping on his neck. "Every day they walk on his neck, I see that now, but he will never tell me about it." In this defining moment she sees how, in order to survive, her son allows his spirit to be broken, day after day.

I ship books anywhere, at approximate cost, which depends on weight, destination and means of shipping. In the U.S., books are normally sent via Priority mail, with insurance added for books over $50 in value. This charge is added to the cost of the book, and, in Connecticut, a 6% sales tax is added to the total. If you live in another country, please specify air or surface shipping.
