Frances Hodgson Burnett
Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849. Her mother moved to Knoxville, Tenessee in 1865. Miss Hodgson began writing for magazines soon after. Her first widely-known story appeared in "Scribner's Magazine" in 1872. Frances married Dr. L. M. Burnett of Washington D.C. in 1873. In 1898 she divorced Dr. Burnett and married Mr. Stephen Townsend in 1900. Her reputation as a novelist was made with her story of Lancashire life, That Lass o' Lowrie's . A number of other works followed, with Through One Administration and A Lady of Quality as the most notable. In 1886 she published the Little Lord Fauntleroy Secret Garden and Sara Crew (later rewritten to become: A Little Princess) are what she is best known for today, but her romance novels were very popular during her lifetime. A Lady of Quality , available on-line, has a surprising plot twist, one totally unexpected for that era. Don't click HERE if you plan to download and read the book. It would ruin the fun.

FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT
English author (1849-1924)
Biography:
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in Manchester in 1849. Some years after his farther's death, all her family moved to United States.
Her reputation as a novelist was made with her story of Lancashire life, That Lass o' Lowrie's (published in 1877), Burnett's first novel, which had been serialized in Scribner 's. The book already showed her talent to portray realistic working-class scenes, mixed with a romantic and most improvable plot. Later on, she had other novels published, like Haworth's Louisiana A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883), as well as a play, Esmeralda
But all these books were not to be her most successful work. In 1886, she published Little Lord Fauntleroy , a children's book which fascinated mothers, for they began dressing their sons in velvet suit with lace collar, like the main character of this book.
Her later books include Sara Crew (1888), later rewritten as A Little Princess for drama, and her marvelous Secret Garden (1909). Both were children's books, and thanks to them, Burnett is quite well-known now-a-days.

My favorite book growing up was Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess . It was one of the first three books I owned, and before my Mum bought me it, it was the one book I would check out of the library time and time and time again (a big yellow-covered three volume edition of A Little Princess, The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy
Now years later, I've been going back to some of my favorite authors from childhood, looking at L. M. Montgomery in particular. If you are visiting from my L. M. Montgomery website , you already know I'm a fan of her. In looking for information of Frances Hodgson Burnett in cyberspace, I found very little information, hence this webpage.
In learning about her, I was surprised at the productivity of her career and the acclaim she received during her lifetime. I have found much information available in libraries, so I plan to collect some of those references here for those interested in learning more about F. H. Burnett. Enjoy your visit

A children's cookbook containing many English and a few Indian specialties was published in 1999, "inspired by The Secret Garden." At least six bed-and-breakfasts in the United States and Canada have "Secret Garden Rooms." The devotion inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 book should not be surprising: In 1886, her Little Lord Fauntleroy inspired mothers in England and America to grow their young sons' curls long and to dress their boys in velvet suits and lace collars. Burnett was born in England but emigrated to a rather hardscrabble life in Tennessee when she was 15. In her late teens, she eased her family's financial difficulties with her earnings from stories she sold to women's magazines. Even before she became famous for her books for and about children, Burnett was a popular novelist, with her first, That Lass o' Lowrie's, published in 1877. Her fame grew with the publication of Little Lord Fauntleroy Sara Crewe, later reissued and dramatized as A Little Princess. Her nearly 50 novels, plays, and collections of stories tended toward the sentimental, although they were notable for their faithful reproduction of family life and class distinctions. The Secret Garden
