In the program notes, Dr. Peter Pereira, also a poet and physician and editor of Floating Bridge Press , wrote: "As a Spanish-English bilingual, first-generation Cuban-American, gay Latino man and primary care physician, Campo writes poems and essays that challenge us to explore a world full of contradictions and coherencies, difference and inclusion, alienation and healing. He understands how poetry can teach us to listen, to see, to connect. Through his finely wrought poems, we immerse ourselves totally in the experience of another, and come away feeling at one. In an era of skepticism and anomie, his outlook is ultimately hopeful and humane. Rafael Campo is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and practices at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, serving a diverse patient population, many of whom are HIV-infected, Spanish-speaking only, and/or gay. His books of poetry include

http://www.wine-lovers-page.com/wines/wt011799.shtml
Today's Wine Tasting Note Two tasty Valpolicellas The name Valpolicella doesn't get much respect from serious wine lovers, and there's a reason for that: This light, fruity red wine, made from a blend of Corvina and other regional grapes in the Veneto region of Northeastern Italy, is generally pinched between the mass market, which makes a lake of simple, least-common-denominator wine that establishes Valopolicella's world reputation, and the luxury market, which takes a substantial portion of the best Corvina grapes for use in the rich, relatively expensive Amarone. In between these two extremes, however, a limited amount of quality Valpolicella can be found, much of it grown in the older, traditional zone ("Valpolicella Classico") and often made to stricter requirements of alcoholic strength and bottle age ("Classico Superiore"). These wines are well worth seeking out, and as the retail prices below indicate, they can offer excellent value. Tomassi 1995 Valpolicella Vigneto del Campo Rafael ($9.99) Best Buy!

Wine notes in 'shelf-hanger' format:

We are now publishing Wine Lovers' Page wine reports in the familiar "shelf-hanger" size and format, to make it easy for wine merchants or collectors to print them out, clip and post them where this wine is displayed. We do ask, however, that the Wine Lovers' Page name and URL be left intact, and that these reports be used with the specific wines rated, not different bottlings or vintages.
All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I accept no free samples from wineries or distributors, purchasing all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. Have you tasted this wine?

He doesn't know it yet, but when my father and I return to Cuba, it will be forever. His antihypertensives thrown away, his briefcase in the attic left to waste, the football game turned offhe's snoring now, he doesn't even dream it, but I know I'll carry him the way he carried me when I was small: In 2023, my father's shrunken, eighty-five years old, weighs ninety pounds, a little dazed but thrilled that's Castro's long been dead, his son impeached! He doesn't know it, dozing on the couch across the family room from me, but this is what I've dreamed of giving him, just this. And as I carry him upon my shoulders, triumphant strides across a beach so golden I want to cry, that's when he sees for sure, he sees he's needed me for all these years. He doesn't understand it yet, but when I give him Cuba, he will love me then.

Rafael Campo
Rafael Campo has published two books that I know of: The Other Man was Me: A Voyage to the New World (poetry) and The Poetry of Healing (short non-fiction). We studied him in my Literature and Medicine Course at Memorial University of Newfoundland in the fall 2000. I recommend his work to anyone, but especially to those of you who work, or will work, in the health field. His awareness of people, separate from their illnesses, is something every health care professional should have. Pick a Poem:
The Distant Moon

Towards Curing AIDS

Technology and Medicine
The Distant Moon
The New York Times The Advocate ; Some lines by Richard Howard gave us hope. A quiet hospital is infinite, The polished, ice-white floors, the darkened halls Or ghostly, lighted Coke machines. I call To him one night, at home, asleep. His breath I dreamed, had filled my lungshis lips, my lips Had touched. I felt as though I'd touched a shrine. Not disrespectfully, but in some lapse Of concentration. In a mirror shines The distant moon. - Rafael Campo
Towards Curing AIDS
I slap on latex gloves before I put My hands inside the wound. A hypocrite Across the room complains that it's her right To walk awayto walk away's her right As a physician. Lapidary, fine, My patient's eyes are overhearing her. He doesn't wince. His corner bed inters Him even now, as she does: he hasn't died, But he will. The right to treatment medicine Denied is all the hollows here: along His arms, the hungry grooves between the bones Of ribs. As if her surgeon's thread through skin The rite of obligation overdue Could save him now. I close the wound. The drain Is repositioned. Needles in his veins, I leave him pleading. There's too much to do. -Rafael Campo

Poetry Porch 3: Poetics
Of the Sonnet and
Paradoxical Beauties:
an interview with Rafael Campo
In October 1997, Joyce Wilson and Rafael Campo participated in this interview, which took place through email. Rafael Campo is a practicing physician and lecturer at Harvard Medical School. He has published two volumes of poetry, The Other Man Was Me, Arte Publico Press, 1994, and What the Body Told Duke University Press, 1996, and a book of essays, The Poetry of Healing , W. W. Norton, 1997. JW: At a reading last winter, at Boston University I believe, we spoke briefly afterward, and I remember your reference to some of your poems as ER poems (referring to the popular television show based on dramatized emergency room situations). This comment led me to expect that I would find an apparent difference in your work, from first book to second, in which the first contained a set of narratives based on your experience as a medical physician, and the second moved on to meet the challenges of the poetic craft, concentrating on form after the earlier were based more on content. When I read your poems, I didn’t find the clear delineation of efforts that I anticipated at all. It was obvious from the beginning that you have been experimenting with the sonnet form all along. Am I correct in concluding that the sonnet is the most represented form in both books? Many of the poems in the first book appear to me to be narratives in 14 lines that follow loose rhyme schemes. And then some are 16 lines, with an abba, etc. rhyme scheme. One ends with a 13th line. Why the sonnet form?
