2001 Persons of the Year
Looks can be deceiving. Jo Carole Carson hits the stores every January and shops all year long. But she’s not a shopaholic. It takes her that long to buy enough to fill 600 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a program that reaches out to suffering children all over the world. It is the annual Christmas project for Samaritan’s Purse, Franklin Graham’s Boone-based international relief agency. The boxes get loaded with small toys, school supplies and toiletry items for a boy or girl, then sent overseas to needy children. "People here in America are so fortunate to have so much," she said. "In some of these places the children have no toys at all. One little boy received a football and didn’t even know what it was. He had to be shown what to do with it. And they are so thrilled to get anything. It’s so sad, I just feel for the children." Carson began by doing just a few shoeboxes through her church, Holy Trinity Lutheran.

    Jo
    Carson By Amanda McCullough B
orn in 1946 in Johnson City, Tennessee, Jo Carson is an accomplished author of short stories, poetry, essays, and plays based on the everyday life of people from Appalachia. Choosing to remain in her hometown, Carson attended East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1973 with degrees in both theater and speech. However, before Carson completed college, she moved to New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. She did not find her dream there and instead returned to her native Tennessee and East Tennessee State University to finish her schooling. Upon her return to Johnson City, Carson began producing educational videos on local history for Broadside TV, a local station. In 1972, when the job with local television ran its course, Carson joined up with the Road Company, a small theatrical group for whom she performs and writes plays both individually and collaboratively. She does not, however, take credit for the collaborative work that takes place in the company. The pieces that the Road Company performs focus on themes and ideas relevant to the Appalachian lifestyle and the area in which Carson lives. Carson can still be found living in Johnson City and performing with the Road Company about her native Appalachia. She is an everyday person like you or me. In an interview with Jo Harris in November 1991, Carson had this to say of herself:

I Can Write a River: An interview with Jo Carson
by Linda Frye Burnham See also: Cross Tides: Getting the picture A Mennonite parishioner ministers to Captain Jack in "Cross Tides." Photo by John Corriere Linda Burnham: What do you find valuable in these storytelling projects? Jo Carson: What happens in the communities that do them ... There are different ways to think about art of any kind (music, visual, theater): One has to do with those people who are, in whatever way, gifted practitioners of an art form, and the products they produce. That is usually how this culture tends to think of art. The only person who can make art is an artist who, somehow in their suffering, is pure. And it is true that amazing things are made and done. The other way to think about art is, if anything, harder to accomplish, always messy, always imperfect, but much more inclusive and sometimes life-changing for those who participate. It involves anybody who wants to participate: Who comes, is. (Heard that from me before?) Sometimes that means a child who is so shy their mother thinks having a line to say would be good for them, sometimes that means someone who is convinced there is reincarnation of Sarah Bernhardt in them just waiting to be discovered

Clinical Nutrition Research Scholar in the Center for Human Nutrition
Co-investigator National Institutes of Health Nutrition Academic Award Education and Professional Advancements Dr. Carson completed a Bachelor's of Science in Home Economics Education at Southwest Texas State University. After completing a dietetic internship and Master's of Science in Nutritional Science at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, she joined the faculty here as Instructor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Southwestern Medical School and as Instructor of Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Allied Health Sciences. A majority of her quarter century of service to this institution has been in dietetics education. She directed the Coordinated Program in Dietetics from 1985-1999. She recently completed a doctoral degree in Nutritional Sciences from The University of Texas at Austin. Continuing to teach undergraduate dietetic students, she has traded her administrative responsibilities for a role in teaching nutrition to medical students and physician assistant students. Research Accomplishments Dr. Carson's deepest interest in nutrition lies in how to help others gain knowledge and skills to improve their own nutritional habits and those of their patients. Her early research was in the nutritional care of cancer patients. In the mid-1970's, the practical hints for patients derived from her study of taste sensitivity in cancer patients were one of a handful of educational materials available for cancer patients undergoing treatment. She served on a National Cancer Institute Working Group to develop proposals for research to improve the nutritional intake of cancer patients.
