THE PUG SECRET ARCHIVE An Annotated Rap by Neal Cassady
One of the features of Kesey's Acid Tests were these monologues that Cassady would give while the Grateful Dead played in the background. These were recorded on tape and stashed in the Prankster archives. This particular rap may have come from the Portland, Oregon Acid Test that happened around Christmas, 65 or New Year's day 66 (I have conflicting dates on this). Another such rap has been published in Hank Harrison's book, The Dead , which was recorded the first time the Grateful Dead played the Straight Theater. If anyone has more detailed information on all this, please email me at colinp@halcyon.com.

Neal Cassady met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg in December, 1946 while the latter two were attending Columbia University. Kerouac's novel On The Road , written in 1951 and published in 1957 is about Neal Cassady, who is Dean Moriarty in the book. From Neal Cassady, according to one of Kerouac's biographers, Jack learned that fiction isn't always false. In 1958, Cassady was arrested and sent to the San Quentin jail for smuggling marijuana. Paroled in 1960, he then met Ken Kesey and his countercultural band of Merry Pranksters. Cassady joined the group and became "Speed Limit" the never-braking driver of the cruise bus, Furthur, that transported the Pranksters in their wild and psychedelic romps. Cassady died in 1968 of "general congestion" after having collapsed by some railroad tracks in Mexico. Cassady's influence on the culture is significant considering very little of what he wrote has been published. It is not very clear that he wrote very much anyway. His association with the Beat Generation writers and the Merry Pranksters has enshrined Cassady in the pantheon of "hipsters" and we delight more in the legend that is Neal Cassady, and less, perhaps, then in the man himself. Neal Cassady driving Further into NY on the NJ Turnpike June 25, 1964. Here it is! Never before released Neal Cassady rapping and driving Ken Kesey’s bus Further into New York in the summer of 1964. Kesey and the Merry Band of Pranksters were making a movie of the trip and were filming and recording everything. Cassady is at his best in this recording that starts out at about 100 miles from New York and ends up 50 miles closer. The film that goes with this recording is in the process of being edited together. This CD mastered from the original tape includes everything from the first part of Cassady’s famous NJ Turnpike rap. Part 2 will be coming soon to complete the Turnpike recordings from the vault of Ken Kesey. $17.00

Kerouac described Neal Cassady and friend Allen Ginsberg (Dean Moriarty and Carlo Marx) in the novel. "But then they danced down the street like dingledodies, and I shambled after as I've been doing all my life after people who interest me, because the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes "Awww!" Kerouac was incredibly impressed by Neal Cassady throughout the years, even though they lost touch for the most part in the mid-sixties, after Kerouac began drinking more and after Cassady's troubles seemed to have multiplied. Yet, as younger men, they were fascinated with each other and in touch more often. Many of Kerouac's books, especially On the Road and Visions of Cody were inspired by Cassady, who took to the road like a madman and wrote wordslinging, fresh spontaneous letters. Cassady was the Wolfeian adventure hero from Kerouac's youth, come to life. Neal's and Jack's "brotherhood" seemed to be a resurrected symbol of Kerouac's lost brotherhood with his Gerard, who had died when Kerouac was only nine. Also, Kerouac was sympathetic to Cassady's dreams to find his father, who had been a drunk in Denver, in and out of jail (much like Dean's own experiences). See the text from the

Cassady was the inspiration for the character 'Dean Moriarty' in Jack Kerouac's bestselling novel 'On the Road'. Neal Cassady- "Joan Anderson" Letter to Jack Kerouac Cassady grew up with his alcoholic father in skid row hotels in Denver, Colorado. Before he was 21 yrs old he claimed to have stolen around 500 cars to joyride with girlfriends, and actually served 15 months in reform schools for these crimes. In 1945 Cassady met a Columbia University student named Hal Chase who was home in Denver for the summer. Chase had gotten to know Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and others the previous spring in New York. When Chase returned to Columbia Uni., Cassady wrote him letters that Chase showed to Kerouac and friends. In December 1946, straight out of a reformatory, Cassady took a bus to New York with his teenage wife, Luanne Henderson, and Chase introduced him to Kerouac and Ginsberg.

Neal Cassady died in Mexico February 8, 1968.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1926. His alcoholic father raised him in the slums of Denver, where, by the age of 16, Cassady had stolen over 400 cars to go out joyriding with girlfriends. And he spent time in juvenile detention centers and reform schools. He developed great street-smarts, a charming charisma, and a fast-paced fun-loving lifestyle.
At the age of 24, he took his teenage wife LuAnne with him to New York, where he met Alen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who he later took on roadtrips back and forth across the country. Cassady said he would teach him to drive if Kerouac would teach him to write. But, ironically, it was Kerouac who picked up his writing style from Cassady. For Kerouac was unable to find a format or style to put his journals into publishable form until he adopted the frantic stream-of-conscienceness style from Cassady's later letters to him. Kerouac's classic "On the Road" was written in this style, and chronicled their roadtrips together. The character Dean Moriarty is really Cassady, who is often the main character of other novels, including "Visions of Cody," "Dharma Bums," "Big Sur," and "Desolation Angels."
In 1948 Cassady married his second wife, Carolyn, who gave birth to three children: Jami, Joanne, and John Allen, who was named after Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.

V prosinci roku 1946 zajel navštívit svého pøítele na Kolumbijskou univerzitu. Zde se seznámil s Jackem Kerouacem Williamem Burroughsem a Allenem Ginsbergem , do kterého se zamiloval. S Jackem se spøátelili natolik, že spoleènì podnikli nìkolik cest po Spojených státech a Mexiku. Spoleènì taky vyzkoušeli nejrùznìjší drogy jako benzedril, marihuanu a peyot a taky hodnì pili. Díky tìmto cestám pozdìji Jack Kerouac napsal legendární román Na cestì . Pokaždé, když se nìkde utáboøili Jack hned zaèal zapisovat všechna dobrodružství. Èasto se však potýkal s problémy, nìjak nemohl najít ten správný styl. Na nìjakou dobu dokonce s psaním pøestal až když v jednom z Nealových dopisù našel to pravé. Zpùsob Nealova vyjadøování, rychlé návaznosti myšlenek a "automatické psaní" se pozdìji stalo beats více než vlastní.

Carolyn Cassady - On Jack and Neal Carolyn Robinson first met Neal Cassady in 1947 in Denver, Colorado, where she was getting her MA degree in Theater and Fine Arts at the University of Denver. Neal was then a self-taught intellectual and already a legendary ladies man who had grown up in Denver flophouses and pool halls. Early stages of his involvement with Carolyn were fictionalized in Jack Kerouac's On the Road where Carolyn was called "Camille." She was called "Evelyn" in subsequent Kerouac novels and her actual name was used in Some of the Dharma . Neal, of course, was the irrepressible "Dean Moriarty" in On the Road AL: How did Neal feel about being the central figure in On the Road CC: Neal had mixed emotions about his role in On the Road . Of course, he got a little ego boost but mainly he was unhappy about it because Jack glorified all the aspects about his character he was trying so hard to overcome. Jack may have intuited Neal's feelings somewhat because he often wrote that he hoped no one felt badly about his writing about them. Neal certainly did not resent Jack's fame. There were never two more mutual admirers than those two.
