JOSHUA CLOVER
In one version you must convince every living thing one by one
to weep until he climbs back into the marriage-house,
that earth about which it is said that bread is the glue of the earth.
Certainly the earth is money, the phrase "the tears of things" is money,
the revelation of the Woman Clothed in the Sun is money.
The lake is a disc of bright money buying a few plain birds down,
they climb back nervously as you hurry through, plain birds like a plain song,
that moment when four or five are around your knees
like Zeno's arrow, rising by halves, like Eurydice's bread,
you would be the one who was struck by a flying bird, the only one to persist outside the local economy, drooling at travelers, holding yourself, slinging incomprehensible advice, you would learn the trick with museum wire where you snap the heads off quiet animals in front of the store, I am trying to invent a way for you to buy me back Joshua Clover 's first book, Madonna anno domini , received the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. He is a professor in the MFA program at Saint Mary's College of California, and Senior Contributing Writer at Spin magazine.

Postmodernist writer Joshua Clover comes to UA
Arizona Daily Wildcat
By Graig Uhlin Arizona Daily Wildcat,
April 24, 2000 Talk about this story Award-winning poet to read his works tomorrow night Poet Joshua Clover says he likes to play around, and he is going to show an audience exactly why tomorrow at a poetry reading hosted by the UA Poetry Center. "For me, playing around is the act of engagement of the mind with the world," said Clover, an assistant professor of English at Saint Mary's College of California and a senior contributing writer for Spin magazine. Clover said he does not mean "playing around" in the child-like sense of the word - although that may help the admittedly nervous poet relax his nerves before his reading. He is referring to the role of pop culture references, media and literary images that vitalize his poetry. "My poetry is filled with quotations, sometimes cited, sometimes not," Clover said. Clover's poetry - collected in a 1997 volume titled "Madonna anno domini" - quotes diverse texts, ranging from Bob Dylan to Woody Guthrie to T.S. Eliot.

Modest $100 Million Proposals, for Better or Verse
    Poetry Nation
by Joshua Clover November 27 - December 3, 2002 n November 15, Poetry Magazine received a $100 million bequest from Ruth Lilly, heir to Eli Lilly and his like-named pharmaceutical behemoth. This isn't the first time the arts have been promised better living through chemistry: Carl Djerassi, "father of the birth control pill," provides residence grants to artists through the Djerassi Foundation. But as lump sums and poetry go, they've never gone together like this. One well-noted irony is that the journal in question rejected Ms. Lilly's poetry a few dec-ades back—the lesson being that it pays to have standards. Suddenly, those standards are golden with highlights of green, and likely to be read all over. The grande dame of verse journals, Poetry (founded 1912) is of the same generation as Ms. Lilly herself, and no one can gainsay its historical importance: Back when Modernism was young and high, the magazine forwarded the earliest works of Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, H.D., and William Carlos Williams. But of late it's become a placid backwater where middlebrow elegies go to die, outcirculated by

September 9th, 2002 6:00 PM Why art can't kill the SI (illustration: Guy Debord and the Situationist International) Guy Debord and the Situationist International: Texts and Documents Edited by Tom McDonough MIT Press, 514 pp., $44.95 Buy this book more on books at VLS he Situationist International wanted it all: "as an artistic avant-garde, as an experimental investigation of the free construction of daily life, and finally as a contribution to the theoretical and practical articulation of a new revolutionary contestation." Refusing the economy of appearances permeating existence, it embraced a total, unalienated life—living over survival, invention over role, desire over domination. This is a matter of some agreement, albeit with shifting terms. Certainly this dream mixed art and the revolution of everyday life; in the formula of imperious founder Guy Debord, "The art of the future will be the overturning of situations or nothing." But Debord's demands were unceasing: "Let us say that we have to multiply poetic objects and subjects," goes another pass, "and that we have to organize games of these poetic subjects among these poetic objects. There is our entire program, which is essentially ephemeral." Such fluidity with such total stakes marks what is, per decisive art historian T.J. Clark, "the only political writing of our time." He clarifies: "The writing that will be seen by future ages to have kept the possibility of politics alive."

    Jennifer Moxley
Tender Buttons, $8.95 (paper) by John Yau In the preface to her collection Imagination Verses All three poets share a belief that the poem must earn its existence, and that the poet can only ensure this possibility, by attending more to the construction of lines and the juxtaposition of words within a line than to the narration of a story. They have rejected the stable, secure, full-throated "I" of much mainstream poetry of the last half-century in favor of the fragmentary, shifting, destabilized "I" of experimental autobiography investigated in the past two decades by poets as diverse as Barbara Guest, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Bernadette Mayer, Charles North, Alice Notley, Nathaniel Mackey, David Shapiro, and Will Alexander, and further investigated by Laura Mullen, Joseph Lease, Andrew Joron, Kevin Young, and Albert Mobilio. In doing so, Clark, Clover, and Moxley recognize that Descartes' dictum, "I think, therefore I am," is no longer a valid suppositum for poetry, and tacitly acknowledge that the mind-body problem, which has haunted philosophy at least since Plato and Aristotle, is a fruitful place to consider what language can and cannot say. For all three, language is proposal at once responsive and imaginative.

    Poet's Sampler: Joshua Clover
Joshua Clover's poems passionately engage an intricate fractal mathematics of rage and praise. He tries, via the most acidly objective means formal means to
crack reality as it presents itself to him (culturally, politically) and render it subjective again. And as with any such dismemberment, it is undertaken in earnest of a more complex and metaphysically dense reassembly. Like his mentor (and former teacher) George Starbuck, he is a physicist of syllables and what we witness, in his extraordinary arguments with form/fate, is a fission, then a fusion, of the intricate life-matter at the heart of language itself: hope, fear, a desperate need for futurity, and a longing for the at-once stifling and intoxicating experience of freedom.
