Free speech
Robert Creeley talks about his 'substantial life'
by Johnette Rodriguez
From his childhood on a West Acton farm to his stint as a volunteer ambulance driver in war-torn Burma in 1944, from his undergrad days at Harvard with John Hawkes to his long-tenured professorship at the State University of New York in Buffalo, poet Robert Creeley has always felt a sense of making, as he put it, "a substantial life." At 72, more than 40 years of teaching and more than a dozen volumes of poetry attest to such. Steve Lacy and Steve Swallow have set Creeley poems to music; a short-lived band called Mercury Rev, former students of Creeley's, did a honky-tonk version of his poem "So There." Following in the footsteps of Pound, Williams and Olson, Creeley created his own set of large footprints for two generations of American poets. His poems have a sense of the poet always present, an active participant in the experience he describes, not just a detached observer. He writes sensuous love poems in staccato phrasing; he spills over with feelings on politics and aging in a set of 12- and 14-line-sonnets to old friends; he captures abstract moments of contemplation in short-lined concrete descriptions that shake your brain. Though his words are clear and direct, his syntax can often swing wide, allowing those words to move through a poem like the brush strokes of an Impressionist painting, shaded by their proximity to other words and forming a whole image only in the closing line. Creeley will read his poems in Providence next week (March 31) as part of the New Directions Festival. The following discussion took place by phone from his home in Buffalo.

Robert Creeley's So There collects three earlier books: Hello Later , and Mirrors . Although these poems have appeared in print before So There is a new book. Bound together these poems engage a counterpoint whose intricacies, harmonies, and dissonances entail important qualities of Creeley's later poetics. Reviewing Pieces in 1970, Denise Levertov noted a relaxation in Creeley's conception of lyric closure: Its very sprawl and openness, its notebook quality, its absence of perfectionism, Creeley letting his hair down, is in fact a movement of energy in his work, to my ear: not a breaking down but a breaking open. In So There this breaking open grows in scope, gaining force by echo and disjunction not only across poems, but across books. Hello records Creeley's wanderings through Asia. For Creeley, geographic wandering and a wandering mind are of a piece (from "Hamilton Hotel"): Magnolia tree out window

Courage with Robert Creeley
Courage is drummer Chris Massey, sax / reed player John Mills and bassist Steve Swallow. On the upcoming release The Way Out is Via the Door , a collaboration of music and poetry, they are joined by Robert Creeley, reading his texts over the sultry, smoky, softly-rendered strains of late-night jazz played by the band. This is beautiful music, a session of intimate, creative jazz conversation. Robert Creeley is one of America's greatest living poets; he was the link between the Beat poets of Greenwich Village and those of Black Mountain College. Creeley has long acknowledged the influence of jazz and improvised music on his work, and in fact considers himself a musician in these contexts. His work was the source of inspiration for Home , the 1980 ECM album in which Swallow set Creeley's words to music sung by Sheila Jordan. He has also performed and recorded with New York sound experimentalists Mercury Rev Before turning to the acoustic bass at age 14, Steve Swallow studied piano and trumpet. He has played with many of the greats, including Pee Wee Russell, Buck Clayton and Vic Dickenson. In 1960 he began to play with Paul Bley, The Jimmy Giuffre Trio and George Russell’s sextet, which featured Eric Dolphy and Thad Jones. He also performed in the early '60s with Joao Gilberto, Sheila Jordan, and bands led by Benny Goodman, Marian McPartland, Chico Hamilton, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer and Chick Corea. He has placed first (electric bass) in the Downbeat International Critics Poll since 1983, and in the Downbeat Readers Poll since 1985.

No dejarlo pasar”. [Miquel Cardell.
