Samuel R. Delany Information
Introduction
Samuel Delany is one of my heroes. I read Nova when I was a teenager. At that time, Bantam had published Triton Dhalgren , and Nova with the same style of cover, linking them in my mind. I was twelve or thirteen years old and intimidated by long books, so I read Nova first. I liked it and thought I might like the other two. I told my best friend about it. He told me that Triton was not very good, `a commie book', based on information his older brother had given him after he read it. Because of that, it was six years before I read Triton and Dhalgren When I finally read Dhalgren , all I could think of was how different (and better) my life would have been had I read it when I was younger. I have since tried to get my hands on everything Delany has written, and been pretty successful. Combing used bookstores has gotten me copies of all of his out of print stuff. He is one of the very few authors that I will buy hardcovers of, instead of waiting for the mass-market paperback to be released. I've put together a bibliography based on this.

Samuel R. Delany (Jump to Alejandro Amenábar) By Tasha Robinson When Samuel R. Delany first started writing science fiction in the early 1960s, he was one of only a tiny handful of blacks active in the field, and he had trouble shaking the erroneous label of "the first black science-fiction author." These days, he's a college professor whose writings include essays, critical reviews, sociological treatises, pornography, graphic novels, and autobiographies, but the "sci-fi author" label still sticks with him, and likely always will; his seminal works are still considered classics of the genre. Vintage Books recently republished Delany's 1974 masterwork Dhalgren, a massive, episodic book that explores urban decay in a near-future setting, as the first in a series of Delany reprints scheduled over the next two years. While touring in support of the Dhalgren re-release, Delany spoke to The Onion A.V. Club about Dhalgren, the nature of privacy, and the purpose of literature. The Onion: In the introduction to Dhalgren , William Gibson describes the book as a riddle that was never meant to be solved. Do you think that's an apt summary?

Samuel R. Delany
Samuel R. Delany (nee April 1,1942) was born and raised in Harlem, New York. He is a highly prolific and widely respected author who has been writing in the science fiction genre for over thirty years. His first novel, The Jewels of Aptor (1962) was published when he was just 19 years of age. Since then he has achieved sustained notoriety for the numerous Hugo and Nebula awards he has won over the past 30 years. His first major award (the Nebula) was won for Babel-17 , a novel reflecting his interest in semiotics. Delany is considered to be a 'high brow' science fiction author, perhaps one of the few true intellectuals in the field. In fact, Delany is a professor of English, having served in that position at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of Minnesota, and most recently at the University of Buffalo. He has written his memoirs in The Motion of Light in Water: Sex and Science Fiction Writing in t he East Village , which won the Hugo Award for non-fiction in 1989. His latest book is

Neither a collection of short stories in the traditional sense, nor a novel, these tales overlap at times, in places intersect, often diverge, but are all held together by the thread of memory. An odyssey of hypnotic beauty originating in a small-time city in Kansas, Adrift in a Vanishing City takes the reader through a tortured landscape of obsessive love, to real-time cities such as Budapest, Berlin and Mexico City, down dead-end streets marked by the invisible graffiti of the lives lost in them. Told in hauntingly lyrical prose, Adrift is a passage within the continuum of memoryfrom which...
