by Greg Kuchmek Paranoid and profound, Philip K. Dick's mind-altering, ground-breaking science-fiction novels are influential, infectious and highly attractive to Hollywood. Four films and at least two theatrical productions have been based on his work. It is also rumored that Stanley Kubrick's in-production film, A.I., is based on Dick's Martian Time Slip , and a script based on his story, The Minority Report , is circulating Hollywood. These films, in turn, have caused a resurge in interest in Dick's work; there is a proliferation of quality trade editions of his formerly near out-of-print work. Dick's jittery paranoid vision appeals to contemporary readers, and his dominant theme of the fragility of "reality" particularly lends itself to filmmaking. During his 1928-82 life span, Dick was a prolific author, with over forty science-fiction novels, several "mainstream" novels, countless stories, and a personal memoir to his credit. Exploring present, future and other-dimensional worlds, Dick always questioned and attacked the fabric of reality. Whether by drugs, technology, schizophrenia, conspiracies, or random twists of fate, Dick's characters lose their grip on life, and find all they perceive as real to be spurious or immaterial. They descend through layer upon layer of false realities until they reach the very foundation of what MUST be real, and then Dick begins to pick away at that also. Since cinema itself is based on creating a false reality, Dick's vision has a resonance when made into film. And when the vision is paired with insidious technology, mind-blowing drugs or endless conspiracies, you can't help but have a thriller. However, it is just these qualities that often undermine the creation of a film that really addresses PKD's philosophical concerns: it's just too easy to make a great action film based on his concepts.

The Mainstream That Through the Ghetto Flows
An Interview with Philip K. Dick Interviewer: Why science fiction out of all the forms of literature you could have chosen? Was it a conscious decision? Dick: Yes, because there's more likelihood in science fiction for the expression of pure ideas than you find in other genres. Interviewer: People say science fiction is "a ghetto." And then on the other hand they say it's a "literature of ideas." But all literature is supposed to be a literature of ideas, right? So why is it that science fiction gets tagged with that label and in the same breath gets tagged as a "ghetto"? In other words, why can people get away with paying a lot less money for it? Dick: In the first place, science fiction has changed a lot in the last few years. It's coming out of the ghetto, but all that's done is make it worse . The writing is worse now that it's coming out of the ghetto because it's losing its identity. It's losing its shape. It's becoming like silly putty. Nowadays, you can call anything you want "science fiction" or you can decide not to call it "science fiction." For example, I have a book coming out. If you buy the Doubleday hard-cover, you're reading a "mainstream" novel; if you buy the Ballantine paperback, you're reading a "science fiction" novel. So if I were to talk to you about my new novel, I'd have to ask you whether you read the Doubleday hardback or the Ballantine paperback. We'd be talking about

"Science Fiction is a lot of fun to write and its worth all of the bad financial breaks to do it. I don't regret one thing. Well, that's not true. I regret it when they turn off the electricity." Dick sold his first short story to in 1951, although "Beyond Lies the Wub" in Planet Stories, July 1952 is also claimed as first. Dick apparently wrote for four years, beginning in 1947, without selling anything. Volume 1 of the Collected Short Stories of PKD further confuses the matter by listing all enclosed stories as 1947 to 1951. Phil's first novel was Solar Lottery , no controversy on that.

Philip K. Dick in Science Fiction
This annotated bibliography list, a subset derived from the Adherents.com Religion in Literature database, is intended as a resource for literary research. It lists mainstream science fiction novels or short stories which contain references to Philip K. Dick. It is not necessarily a comprehensive list of such literature, but all Hugo-, Campbell-, Nebula- and Locus-winning novels have been indexed, as have many other major works. Philip K. Dick is one of the most enigmatic and distinctive writers in the history of science fiction. His personal life was in many ways as unusual as his fiction. Fans and other writers have enjoyed PKD's numerous novels and short stories, which were always unique but at the same time hit upon a number of "Dickian" themes. PKD frequently wrote about the very nature of reality, and about how we know what we know. Spiritual, religious and philosophical themes were prominent. He considered advances in technology not in the optimistic or pessimistic modes typical of other genre writers, but as commonplace components of a shockingly commonplace existence. Dick's worlds managed to be more bizarre than those of other writers, while at the same time exuding a greasy, lived-in, almost mundane reality. PKD was a "science fiction writer's writer." Many of the genre's pros have cited him as an important influence. Some have even referred to him within the their own fiction. Such references are listed on this page.

    PHILIP K DICK
"I was 12 when I read my first SF magazine: I was actually looking for popular science. I was most amazed. Stories about science? My view became magic equals science, and science of the future equals magic." Birthplace

    Chicago, US
    Education
UC Berkeley, US (German and philosophy; dropped out)
    Other jobs
He worked in a second-hand jazz store.
Did you know? In February and March of 1974, Dick experienced a series of visual/auditory hallucinations that he referred to as "2-3-74" and which came to dominate his life and work from then on. He claims that one afternoon he was hit by a beam of pink light and a "higher intelligence" informed him that his young son was very ill. He took the boy to hospital, where they discovered a potentially fatal inguinal hernia. Surgery was performed, and the boy's life was saved. Critical verdict Being branded a sci-fi writer was critical death in America, and for a long time Dick's eclectically cerebral books were judged more on the lurid pulp covers so beloved by American publishing houses than their actual content. His fellow writers, of course, knew different: "The fact that what Dick is entertaining us about is reality and madness, time and death, sin and salvation, has escaped most critics," opined Ursula K Le Guin. Dick finally achieved the acclaim he deserved with the release of the film Blade Runner - just months after he'd died of a stroke.
