Du Bois, 1918 Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. (b. Feb. 23, 1868, Great Barrington, Mass., U.S.d. Aug. 27, 1963, Accra, Ghana), American sociologist, the most important black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. He shared in the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 and edited The Crisis its magazine, from 1910 to 1934. Late in life he became identified with Communist causes.
Early career
Du Bois was graduated from Fisk University, a black institution at Nashville, Tenn., in 1888. He received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. His doctoral dissertation, The Suppression of the African Slave-Trade to the United States of America, 1638-1870, was published in 1896. Although Du Bois took an advanced degree in history, he was broadly trained in the social sciences; and at a time when sociologists were theorizing about race relations, he was conducting empirical inquiries into the condition of blacks. For more than a decade he devoted himself to sociological investigations of blacks in America, producing 16 research monographs published between 1897 and 1914 at Atlanta University, where he was a professor, as well as The Philadelphia Negro; A Social Study

The shadow of a mighty Negro past flits through the tale of Ethiopia the shadowy and of the Egypt the Sphinx. Throughout history, the powers of single blacks flash here and there like falling stars, and die sometimes before the world has rightly gauged their brightness. Is a civilization naturally backward because it is different? Outside of cannibalism, which can be matched in this country, at least, by lynching, there is no vice and no degradation in native African customs which can begin to touch the horrors thrust upon them by white masters. Drunkenness, terrible diseases, immorality, all these things have been gifts of European civilization. An American, a Negro . . . two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder. We black men seem the sole oasis of simple faith and reverence in a dusty desert of dollars and smartness. It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.

Ethel Nance-W.E.B. Du Bois Correspondence: Du Bois in Context
Anthony Bliss, Rare Book Librarian, Bancroft Library
One of the often overlooked shortcomings of collecting a famous person's papers is that most of the time a repository only receives one side of the correspondence. The letters that the "famous person" wrote were sent off to someone else, and that corpus of material is therefore scattered. Sometimes, famous people keep copies of outgoing letters, but it is rarely systematic. This little meditation comes up in the case of W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963), one of our major African American leaders. His long life and boundless energy brought him into contact with key figures from Booker T. Washington to the civil rights activists of the early 1960s. Most of the Du Bois papers are at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, but a significant group of his letters has recently turned up in San Francisco and come to Bancroft.

Prof. Kim Pearson Bliss 217 x 2692 Office hours: Monday 2-5 or by appt. kpearson@tcnj.edu This is an interdisciplinary seminar course focused on the life, publications, philosophy and impact of William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, arguably the premier African American scholar and thinker of the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular attention will be accorded to Du Bois's methods and uses of scholarship and argumentation, which continue to inform debates about race, race relations and the politics of knowledge formation and dissemination. This course will enhance your understanding of modern American political and cultural history, while inviting your considered responses on the question, Will 'the color line' be the problem of the 21st century? If so, can Du Bois's ideas or methods assist us in solving this enduring problem?

A Homeric Life: W.E.B. Du Bois
    Review by Jim Zook
From The Chronicle of Higher Education Thirty years after the death of controversial black sociologist and political activist W.E.B. Du Bois, his first biography has appeared, written by a Rutgers University historian who sees his subject as having led "one of those Homeric lives" that seemingly touched upon a myriad of issues, came in contact with a wide range of people, and revolved around life on three continents. At the turn of the century, a time when it might have been dangerous to be a vociferously angry black man, W.E.B. Du Bois determined that it was time for him to be loud and adamant. As an Atlanta University professor in his mid-30s, Du Bois had already proved himself a trail-blazing sociologist with several studies of black America. But mainstream academe had all but ignored the work of Harvard University's first black Ph.D. The slight was intolerable for Du Bois, a man who recognized his own brilliance at an early age and spent most of his 95 years proclaiming it. He set aside academic sterility for the passion of the essayist with his 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk, in which he first expressed his notion of "racial twoness" as a core-identity issue for people of both African and American heritage. This idea was too bold to be ignored, especially by the millions of subordinated black Americans whom it inspired. "Two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder," Du Bois called it. "The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self."
