Set in 1930`s coastal England, Rebecca is the play version of du Maurier`s classic novel of love, hate and deceit. Brooding and moody Maxim deWinter returns from an extended trip to the continent with a young bride, less than a year after the tragic death of hi first wife, Rebecca. The staff of Manderley, his country home, including Mrs Danvers the housekeeper who rules over the house, are still devoted to their former mistress, the socialite Rebecca and they find it difficult to accept the new, shy Mrs deWinter who is inexperienced running a large home. In addition, Rebecca`s tragic boating accident, that took her life, seems to haunt Manderley and its inhabitants. Was there truly an accident? is Rebecca really dead? Were Maxim and Rebecca blissfully happy? Du Maurier holds you in suspense until the last in this brilliant story. The story was firstly dramatized for the radio by Orson Wells in 1938 and has been filmed with Laurence Olivier (directed by Alfred Hitchcock) and later with Charles Dance.

Ligesom i filmatiseringen Af Enoch

The Du Maurier Festival

Launched in 1996 the Daphne Du Maurier Festival of Arts and Literature is a ten-day event in Fowey in mid May. Festival features leading writers, entertainers and celebrities in an eclectic mix of events. As well as the star name performers, the festival also includes guided walks, plays, exhibitions, workshops and free entertainment. The festival 'village' is assembled at the rear of Fowey's Community College grounds, overlooking the estuary and town of Polruan, it provides a stunning backdrop for what has fast become an extremely popular event despite some early teething problems and now provides the town with an influx of people at a time when it has perhaps been far quieter in the past. For fans of Du Maurier's work there are readings, guided walks and river trips of the locations that inspired her as well as plenty of other themed events. For the casual visitor there are plenty of shows and concerts to attend during the course of the festival thanks to the event organisers.

by Eve Chebuhar Daphne du Maurier wrote over forty books, including Rebecca Hungry Hill My Cousin Rachel , and Frenchman's Creek . She was an incredibly successful author who was able to write anywhere her husband was stationed in wartime. Through both World Wars and the Great Depression, she wrote about many subjects, and even a few biographies. Du Maurier had ten novels and short stories converted to movies, appeared on TV, and was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This phenomenal woman's books have enchanted people, mainly women, from as young as about twelve years old. Daphne du Maurier was born in London on May 13, 1907. The Great War started in 1914, when little Daphne was only seven years old, but she still was sent off to school. After boarding school and being taught by private tutors in Paris, she started her writing; it was 1926, and she was only nineteen years old. Coincidentally, Elizabeth Windsor, or Queen Elizabeth II to be, was born in the same year that Daphne started writing. By 1928 Daphne was selling her short stories and poems to magazines. One of these stories became Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds In 1930 the Great Depression started, but Daphne still got her first novel
