LESSEN VOOR LEZERS Umberto Eco: 'Zes wandelingen door fictieve bossen' Drie jaar geleden verscheen een hard-boiled detective van Dirkje Kuyk 'De NV Dopiflex'. Het boek heeft voor een groot deel de stad Utrecht als decor, compleet met bekende en enkele minder bekende straatnamen. De Maliebaan is wel een van de bekendste. Kuyk situeert daar een pand waar zich duistere praktijken afspelen, maar ik was verrast toen zij het huisnummer van dat pand noemde: 110. Ik zag twee mogelijkheden: 1. De schrijfster had een bestaand pand als model gekozen. Dat was zeer wel mogelijk, al leek het me niet waarschijnlijk, omdat de bewoners, dan wel gebruikers van het 'model-pand' zich ongetwijfeld liever niet geassocieerd zagen met de door Kuyk beschreven activiteiten. Bovendien leek me een dergelijke expliciete locatie in strijd met de ongeschreven wetten van de fictie. 2. Er bestond geen nummer 110. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid was gewekt en omdat ik op de fiets binnen vijf minuten bij de Maliebaan ben besloot ik poolshoogte te gaan nemen. Mogelijkheid 2. bleek te kloppen: de nummering aan de 'even zijde' eindigt bij 104. Het bovenstaande is een van de thema's die uitvoerig door Eco belicht worden in 'Zes wandelingen door fictieve bossen', de neerslag van de Charles Eliot Norton-lezingen die de schrijver vorig jaar hield te Harvard. Deze lezingen over literatuur mogen zich verheugen in een lange traditie en Eco bevindt zich in het gezelschap van illustere voorgangers als Italo Calvino en Borges.

Después de estudiar en la universidad de esa ciudad, trabajó para la RAI (Radio Audizione Italiana) desde 1954 hasta 1959, y fue profesor de estética en Turín entre 1956 y 1964. Más tarde, dio clases en la Universidad de Milán durante dos años, antes de convertirse en profesor de comunicación visual en Florencia en 1966. Durante esos años publicó sus importantes estudios Obra Abierta (1962) y La estructura ausente (1968). Entre los años 1969 y 1971 dio clases en la Universidad Politécnica de Milán, y en 1971 pasó a ser profesor de semiótica en Bolonia. Al mismo tiempo que sus trabajos teóricos sobre el análisis de los signos y los significados ha influido y creado escuela en círculos académicos, Eco se ha hecho popular a través de dos novelas, El nombre de la rosa (1981) una historia detectivesca que se desarrolla en un monasterio en el año 1327, y El péndulo de Foucault (1988), una fantasía acerca de una conspiración secreta de sabios. Ambas novelas se basan en los amplios conocimientos que Eco ha ido adquiriendo sobre filosofía y literatura.

The ostensible reason is that there are thousands of books by pagan, Jewish, and Arab authors, as well as the records of many heresies. While true Christians must understand error in order to combat it, only the strongest and most mature minds should be exposed to it. Naturally the scribes and scholars, who have come from all across Europe to use the library, long to view its hidden treasures. Strange intrigues develop among the monks, and suddenly turn to murder. A gifted young illuminator is killed; the next morning a second monk is found dead, plunged head-first into a barrel of pigs' blood.
