Scholars Index Complete Short Stories by Ronald Firbank , Steven Moore (Editor) Ranging from impressionistic prose poems and allegories to sardonic vignettes of high-society life, they all display Firbank's satiric eye and stylistic flair. Only a few of the stories were published commercially; most have been available only in expensive, limited editions, and four stories are published here for the first time from Firbank's manuscripts. Included in a appendix are two other pieces Firbank wrote at the same age the poem "The Wind & the Roses" and his only venture into art criticism, "An Early Flemish Painter "and detailed textual notes that give the publishing history for all the works. The latter, which has been produced in England occasionally since the 1950s, is considered to be among Firbank's major works, and yet it, like the other two plays, has not been generally available in this country until this edition was published. The plays are filled with the wit and satire for which Firbank's novels are relished; indeed, Firbank's novels relied so heavily on dialogue that the distinction between them and his plays is minimal. Consequently, those who enjoy his novels and storiesas well as those who enjoy the comic British theater tradition of Pinero, Wilde, and Cowardshould welcome this collection. ~ RONALD FIRBANK ~
Ronald Firbank, whose real name was Arthur Annesley, was born in London, England in 1886. During his brief career he achieved some recognition as an innovator in satiric dialogue and narrative techniques. His books reflect his own legendary, eccentric, if not personal life, with all its bizarre characters and laced with sophisticated wit. He wrote such novels as Vainglory
Inclinations Caprice Valmouth
) and The Flower Beneath the Foot ), but his most famous is probably Prancing Nigger (1924) which was originally published in England as Sorrow in Sunlight . His last novel, The Artificial Princess , although written circa 1915 was released posthumously in 1934. He is one of those British authors who apparently became strongly influenced by the writings of Aleister Crowley, but very little survives to tell of the full extent of their relationship. Another author Since Ronald Firbank wrote many stories it is only fair to ask if he ever used Aleister Crowley as a model for any characters in his novels. This is difficult to ascertain. We do know that in his first novel, Vainglory , two characters named Mrs Shamefoot and Lady Castleyard try to raise the devil with remarkable results. One biographer quickly points out that this scene

Written in a highly personal, satiric style with no conventional plots, his books are disciplined journeys into a world inhabited by bizarre characters. His writings have had an influence on the novels of such writers as Evelyn Waugh, Ivy Compton-Burnett, and Aldous Huxley.

British novelist. Full name Arthur Annesley Ronald Firbank. His mother was the society beauty Harriet Jane Garrett. His father was the MP Sir Thomas Firbank (1850-1910) who was also a wealthy company director. His grandfather was Joseph Firbank (1819-86), the wealthy railway contractor. The sunstroke that he had as a child left him delicate. He also spent much of his time alone. He went to Uppingham School, and then on to Trinity Hall, Cambridge University. While there he met Vyvyan Holland, a son of Oscar Wilde , and he also met R. H. Benson who received him into the Roman Catholic church in 1907. The Cambridge academic Edward Dent introduced him to Rupert Brooke. Ronald Firbank left Cambridge in 1909 without completing a degree. With the personal wealth that he inherited he travelled around Spain, Italy, the Middle East, and North Africa. He developed a number eccentricities, such as keeping a palm plant in his flat and employing a gardener to come in twice a day to water it. He wrote his novels on piles of deep blue cards. Many critics dismissed them as slight, but they later became more highly regarded as innovative comic novels. He created fantastic, elegant myths with society ladies, ecclesiastics, lesbians, kings, and nuns.
