George MacDonald Fraser
back in a flash Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Fraser is best known for his Flashman Papers series, which takes place in the middle of the 19th century. The books pretend to be the memoirs of one Harry Flashman. Flashman was the school bully in a book entitled Tom Brown's School Days that book records that he was expelled from Rugby School for drunkeness. Fraser feigns that he was a real person, and carries his career forward from that time. I'm almost embarassed to recommend these books; Harry Flashman is a bounder, a coward, a cad, a man of nasty habits and no principle except "Harry first!" He joins the British Army, and by lying, cheating, licking boots, and being in the right (or wrong) place every time manages to participate in many of the great events of the 19th century. He was at the Charge of the Light Brigade, and had very insulting things to say about his commanding officers (but not to their faces). He was involved in the Sepoy Mutiny in India. He helped sack the Summer Palace in China. He was at Little Bighorn with General Custer. He was at Harper's Ferry with John Brown. He knew Otto von Bismarck when he was nobody, and regretted it. He was (much against his will) supercargo on a slave ship and brother-in-law to Geronimo. He fought in the American Civil War...on both sides (although that book hasn't been written yet). Fraser embroiders the facts, obviously, but uses footnotes to clue us in on where he's telling the truth and where he's stretching italways maintaining the illusion that he's just the editor of Flashman's memoirs. Some of the volumes in the series are

George MacDonald Fraser MeetGeorge MacDonald Fraser In a letter to World Authors Quartered Safe Out Here and his later service is the basis for his very funny but also very thought-provoking short stories about Private McAuslan, the 'dirtiest soldier in the British Army'. "After the war I was a sports and general reporter with the Carlisle Journal where I married Kathleen Hetherington, a reporter from another paper. We went to Canada together, and after a brief period in Toronto where I almost sold a set of encyclopedias to a man with a broken washing-machine, we got jobs as reporters in Saskatchewan. After a year we came home, our first son was born, and I worked as a reporter and sub-editor on the Cumberland News before we moved to Glasgow in 1953. On the Glasgow Herald I was on ... [various] sub-editing jobs ... before becoming features editor, and deputy editor from 1964 to 1969. Our daughter and second son were born in 1953 and 1957 respectively. Advent of an Author and Screenwriter
"I had been writing on and off since the age of five, and thanks to my wife's encouragement I persevered in the hope of becoming a novelist; my first book, Flashman , was published in 1969, and I gave up newspaper work and devoted myself to being a free-lance author." And a very successful author he became as a glance at Fraser¹s bibliography will demonstrate. Among his best known works are nine sequels to Flashman which deal with some very interesting venues of the 19th century ranging from the steppes of Russia to the river valleys of Borneo, China and Africa and the Great Plains of the American West.

18. George MacDonald Fraser Biography
george macdonald fraser Biography. AutoBiography Quarted safe out here McAuslan. The life and career of george macdonald fraser. O.B.E.
http://www.harryflashman.org/GMF.htm
George MacDonald Fraser. O.B.E. Born Carlisle, England 1926 Servered in the Border Regiment in India and Burma as part of 17th Indian Division 1943 and Gordon Highlanders in the Middle East after the war. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant. Worked as a journalist in Canada and Britain. Served as Deputy Editor for the Glasgow Herald First published work. Flashman 1969. Since then publishing over twenty best sellers. Screen plays include the 'Three Musketeers' 1973 and James Bond's ' Octopussy A Cumbrian by birth, despite his Scottish name and hertidge, Fraser grew up near the historic city of Carlisle , in Cumbria Northern England near to the border of Scotland in the 1926. Carlisle is a historic city, many famous historical figures are featured in the area's structure and development. The Borderlands - stretching from the South of Scotland and the Eden Valley across to the Cheviot Hills in Northumbria has a bloody and interesting history. 'Hadrian's wall' the Roman wall; their defenses against the wild north, starts not far from Carlisle. Mary Queen of Scots (1542-87) - was incarcerated at Carlisle Castle - and the heroic Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720-88) who led the Jacobite rebellion (1745-46) declared his father King from Carlisle Cross. The author Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) married his French born wife in Carlisle Cathedral and Henry VIII ordered the construction of the City's twin bastions of defence in the drum towers of the Citadel which can still be seen. It is not difficult to see how Fraser grew up with an interest in history.

The following questions/comments were submitted by Royal Flashman Society members, interested readers, and George MacDonald Fraser.
Mr. Fraser on the biography of P.C. Wren
GMF: I had to write a brief resume of P.C. Wren's career a few years ago for a collection of adventure novels which I introduced for Collins Classics, and was surprised to find, on looking into his background, a number of discrepancies between the biographical publicity put out by publishers, and his entry in Missing Persons , a recent volume of the Dictionary of National Biography , generally regarded as the ultimate authority. Have a look at Missing Persons ; the Wren article is most interesting, and when you've read it you'll understand why I was left rather puzzled, and was cautious in writing my own short note about him. P.C. Wren remains something of a mystery.
Mr. Fraser and the Brigadier on Dickens of the Mounted
GMF: There's no mystery about the supposed "Flashman" figure in Dickens of the Mounted an impudent impostor, and a most unconvincing one. He's vulgar, his style and speech are manifestly bogus, he's the wrong age, calls himself "Major" thirty years after Flashman became a colonel, is "portly" and "waddles" when everyone knows that Flashy never lost his lancer figure, and he even waxes his moustache and wears a monocle, for God's sake, affectations which Flashman would have scornedd... it hardly seems necessary to add that Flashman was nowhere near Regina in November, 1885, and was never in the Canadian militia. Someone, far from "seeing right through him", has been badly hoaxed which reminds us, yet again, that the only reliable information about our hero is that contained in the Flashman Papers, and other "accounts" should be ignored.
