"It was at Rome... as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, while barefoot friars were singing vespers in the Temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind." However, Gibbon's first works were written in French. From 1759 to 1762 Gibbon hold a commission in the Hampshire militia, reaching the rank of colonel. Before 1763 Gibbon had considered various subjects as worthy of the type of philosophical analysis that he wished to apply to history: the life of Sir Walter Raleigh, the history of Switzerland, and others. However, he felt that he had nothing original to say about Elizabethan politics and he could not read German. In 1764 he visited Rome and was inspired to write the history of the city from the death of Marcus Aurelius to the year 1453. After his father died Gibbon found himself in some difficulties, but he was able to settle in London to proceed with his great work. The first volume appeared in 1776, with public reaction to Gibbon's ironical treatment of the rise of Christianity and the actions of early church fathers. Like Voltaire, Gibbon was himself a deist who had little appreciation of the metaphysical side of religion. He examined the secular side of religion as a social phenomenon - religion did not have for Gibbon special sanctity. But Christianity had a special role in the fall of the Roman empire:

Gibbon, Edward (1737 - 1794) UK Writer VD Writer and historian of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon was born in England on April 27, 1737 and spent his youth on the banks of Lake Geneva . As was the tradition with upper class English families, he came to Switzerland to complete his education. The young man studied at the faculty of law, language and history in Lausanne , where he also frequented the literary salons to read the foreign press and play whist. He fell head over heels with the pastor's daughter, Suzanne Curchod, and wanted to marry her, but her father was categorically opposed. Gibbon had to resign himself to a life of celibacy. The young man thus left the city to forget his sorrows, only to return five years later. He wrote his life's work

There, too, he became engaged to Suzanne Curchod, later to become wife to Jacques Necker and mother to After he returned to England he began writing, beginning with his ). But his writing career was interrupted by a four-year stint in the Hampshire militia. In Gibbon was in Rome, where he was struck with the idea for what became his greatest work, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire . The first volume appeared in , and the series was finished in . The famous chapters 15 and 16 attracted the most attention; in them he criticizes the institutions of early Christianity, and earned for himself the reputation of an atheist, which he hoped to combat in his Vindication of . A good style is not very common; thorough information is still rare; and if these meet, what a chance that impartiality should be added to them!" The English historian Edward Gibbon, who died 200 years ago, did not quite meet the last test, but neither did his Roman predecessor Tacitus, who alone can stand with him among the world's supreme historians.

GIBBON, EDWARD
GIANT’S KETTLE, GIANT’S CAULDRON or POT-HOLE, in GIAOUR (a Turkish adaptation of the Pers. gdwr or gbr, an infidel), a word used by the Turks to describe all who are not Mahommedans, with especial reference to Christians. The word, first employed as a term of contempt and reproach, has become so general that in most cases no insult- is intended in itf use; similarly, in parts of China, the term “foreign devil ‘ has become void of offence. A strict analogy to giaour is found in the Arabic kaffir, or unbeliever, which is so commonly in usc as to have become the proper name ‘of peoples and countries. GIB, ADAM (1714—1788), Scottish divine and leader of thi Antiburgher section of the Scottish Secession Church, was borr on the 14th of April 1714 in the parish of Muckhart, Perthshire and, on the completion of his literary and theological studice at Edinburgh and Perth, was licensed as a preacher in 1740 Principal publications: Tables for the Four Evangelists (1770, and with author’s name, 1800); The Present Truth, a Display of the Secession Testimony (2 vols., 1774); Vindiciae dominicae (Edin., 1780).
