Martyn Godfrey was born in Birmingham, England on April 17, 1949. He now lives in St. Albert, Alberta. He wrote his first novel over ten years ago. Things weren't always easy for Martyn especially in his younger years. He had to repeat grade 3 because he couldn't write. His first novel started when a student challenged him to write something for the class which he taught. Martyn took the challenge and 6 weeks later that story became the first draft of THE DAY THE SKY EXPLODED. He submitted it to Scholastic and it was accepted. Martyn couldn't believe it until he got a letter from a boy in Nova Scotia and finally clued in that he had connected with kids as far as 3,000 miles away.

Dear Martyn,

THE EDMONTON JOURNAL
We co-authored a book together, Sometimes, when one of your books came out, I found myself featured as a character in the book, not always in a very complimentary manner but our friendship was such that no matter what we said to, or about, each other, we could always laugh about it. You were the teacher, Mr. Martin, in my first book. In 1986 your book The Last War Yes there was a lot of laughter. In one edition of The Membership Directory of the Writers Union of Canada You will forever be in my heart.

When people heard the news of martyn godfrey's death, their reaction was stunned disbelief.
http://www.yabs.ab.ca/godfreybio.html
Martyn Godfrey IN MEMORIUM
When people heard the news of Martyn Godfrey's death, their reaction was stunned disbelief. Most often, they expressed their surprise by referring to his age: "But, he was so young!" Just over fifty, he radiated energy and an irrepressible spirit of youth.
Those who knew him personally, or through his public speaking, shared an image of Martyn. They saw the perennial teenager, a loping, long-haired guy who briefly looked nervous before a microphone. In a few moments, however, he transformed into a fascinating storyteller, and had the audience enthralled. His stories, both written and oral, were usually about children and young adults, and his fans knew that he truly understood the experiences of youth.

My personal memories of Martyn are a mixture of many feelings: affection, admiration and even exasperation. He was a warm friend, generous with his time and support; a loving father; a mentor to beginning writers. At the same time, he was a card-carrying member of the Reform Party, a fact he enjoyed waving in the face of his many liberal friends. He also had a habit of periodically "disappearing" for weeks on end, neglecting to phone. After a while, his friends accepted this behavior, saying "Well, that's just Martyn."
It is a cliche to say, especially after someone's death, that he or she was a complex person. But in Martyn's case this was especially true. His political conviction, for example, rested on a kind of social Darwinism. As a self-employed writer who literally survived by his wits, he knew all too well the mercantile soul of the book industry. His amazing production of work was a function of love and necessity, equally. His speaking tours, punctuated by seemingly endless motel rooms, were passionate and imperative. And his periods of aloneness were dictated by a disciplined work ethic.

With Meet You in the Sewer Martyn Godfrey has created a grab-bag of adolescent angst , peer stresses, parental expectations, a personal quest against fear of the dark, and actual physical danger! Godfrey begins the book with a note from the teacher adviser of the writing club at John Allen Watson School, ever after known as "JAWS," in which she explains that the following text was written by club member JB Lunn. Beginning the book this way provides Godfrey with the perfect vehicle for the subsequent "attitude" and vocabulary of his main character. Godfrey excels at this type of atmosphere/character m elange and proceeds to racket along with a plot full of action and challenge. JB Lunn, grade 8 student at JAWS, tells us first about his fear of the dark and then plunges into a confrontation with his father. J B is told rather than asked to walk newcomer and lowly grade 6 student, Erin, to school. JB complies, but tells Erin in no uncertain terms that he doesn't want anything to do with her. Events and Erin herself conspire gainst JB and they are soon very much together on a scavenger hunt try-out, a sewer exploration, and then a building fire. The story is resolved quickly and, in the case of the parent interest, unrealistically, but this does not deter from the appeal of the tale.

Writing Studio Tips : Writing Tip #4: First Aid - Martyn Godfrey First Aid
Martyn Godfrey
The very last thing I write when I finish a novel is the first page. There is a reason for this. I watch students in the library and how they select the books they want to read. First, they glance at the title and cover illustration. If they are interested, they flip the book over and read the blurb on the back cover. If they are still interested, they crack the first page and read five to fifteen lines. Not sentences, lines. In other words, if an author hasn’t grabbed a prospective reader in the first half dozen sentences of his work, chances are that reader will be moving on to something else. Here are three tried and true first paragraph methods guaranteed to work...literary first aid, if you will:
  • Action ~ Start your story with something intense. Have your character fall down the stairs, get hit on the head with a volleyball, or run away from a bully. Create tension through movement: a boy charging down the stairs to answer a ringing telephone before his mother picks up the receiver begs the questions, “Why is he in such a hurry? Who’s calling?” I’d want to read on.
  • Dialogue ~ Consider these sentences: “Look out!” Cheryl screamed. “Runaway bus!” I shouted. “I think I’m on fire,” my friend said with a chuckle. Interesting dialogue can start your story off with a real bang. If you write opening lines like these, the reader is yours to lead down the story lane.
