Arthur Jensen Replies to Steven Jay Gould
The following is a review of Gould's Mismeasure of Man , in which Dr. Arthur Jensen replies to Gould's severe criticism of him in the book. Of course, uncritical admirers of Gould will "know" that Jensen is an alleged "racist," and hence anything he says can ever-so-conveniently be automatically be ignored. But those who are open-minded enough to give both sides a fair hearing should read Jensen's reply without any preconceived ideas, and ask themselves: Is this man really the terrible bigot and fool that Gould makes him out to be? Or is he a serious scholar who has been the victim of a slick campaign to paint him as a scoundrel because his findings contradict certain political ideologies? Jensen's reply has, until now, only been seen by a miniscule fraction of those who have read Gould's Mismeasure . It is now time for the "other side" to be heard.

    Email from Dameon Ming:
Steven, I read you profile article on the INFORMS page, and found it very interesting. I have a few questions and hope you can find time to answer them. 1) Why did you go into the field of consulting? 2) Do you have any advice for a young professional going into the field consulting? 3) How can consulting related work early in one's career be beneficial in later stages? Thanks for you time, Dameon Ming
    Steven's Reply:
    1) Why did you go into the field of consulting? It's something that has always interested me. In consulting you can gain a wide variety of experience, in many different companies and many different industries, but maintain the stability of single employer. Contracting opportunities are few and far between in OR (though there are plenty in the Computer Science arena). Besides, contracting tends to be very short-term and you end up jumping from one thing to the next often without a sense of completion on any one project. I soon discovered that my combination of a strong CS background along with my MSOR skills was indeed a rare combination. This makes me particularly valuable to clients.

    great stuff
Steven Gould. Wildside . Tor. 1996
    Review:
A "rites of passage" novel about coping with a new-found ability in adolescence, this time, a gate to a parallel, unspoiled, earth. Charlie is short, fat, bright, and has his own secret world. But unlike most, his is real. He gets four friends involved, first selling passenger pigeons to zoos, then getting more ambitious, and into more danger. This is great fun. All the kids (well, adults: they've just turned 18) are smart, sensible and competent, but they have problems too, with their families, with the law, and with each other. The action has all the flavour of classic Heinlein juveniles smart kids interacting with lovingly-described technology, here aeroplanes, and with the wilderness along with added depth of characterisation. A great follow-up to Jumper (even better in one respect: this time there is an explanation for the new-found ability).

    Background
Steven started "playing" with computers in the early 1980's, according to his parents. Little did they know, rather than spending much time playing games, he was more interested in finding out how they worked. He spent numerous hours locked away learning the ins and outs of his early computers, learning BASIC, 6502 assembly language, Z80 assembly language, and Pascal. Steven's hobby led him to pursue his degrees in Computer Science (BSc) and Management Science and Operations Research (MSc). Steven's unique combination of Operations Research (OR) and Computer Science strategically positioned him in the IT marketplace. After working for Dash Associates in England, he moved to the States in 1993 to pursue his career the other side of the pond. Steven utilized his skills in OR and Computer Science in his first few years in the United States, first as Vice President of Software Development for a start-up optimization company in Knoxville, Tennessee, then at SABRE in Fort Worth, Texas.

    38. Steven Gould, Blind Waves
steven gould, Blind Waves (Tor, 2000). If you haven't read anythingby steven gould, this would be an excellent book to start with.
    http://www.rambles.net/gould_waves.html
    Steven Gould,
    Blind Waves
    (Tor, 2000)
The greenhouse effect has warmed the atmosphere. The Antarctic ice cap has melted substantially, the release of the weight has set off volcanoes there, and one of the large ice shelves slid off the continent. The ocean level has risen 100 feet. Blind Waves is a novel of the relatively near future, perhaps 50-150 years or so ahead. Stephen Gould has written one of the best science fiction novels I've read recently. I was very sorry when it ended, and plan on re-reading it soon! His world and his characters are living, complex and interesting, and the combination of the thriller plot and the budding romance of the two main characters is very satisfying. Gould has explored the ways in which the rising ocean levels could impact a culture that's recognizably ours, and how it could change in response. Although some of the ways are unexpected, none were implausible. Much of the world's population lives within 100 feet of sea level, and the displacement this rise caused affected social, economic and political structures profoundly. I'll be re-reading this book partly to pay more attention to the world in which it takes place; this time, I grew distracted by the plot and people. The plot is very exciting, involving underwater salvage, a mysterious sinking of a ship, rogue governmental officials (I don't think that's giving too much away), and a great deal about sonar and other underwater tracking options. The book begins with a chase, which lasted a bit too long for my tastes, although other elements of the world and the characters were brought in. I hope that those who also may feel it's a bit of a slow start (although tense) will stick with the story; it gets more engaging soon.
