Herbert George Wells
Writer, born in Bromley, S Greater London, England, UK. He was apprenticed to a draper, tried teaching, studied biology in London, then made his mark in journalism and literature. He played a vital part in disseminating the progressive ideas which characterized the first part of the 20th-c. He achieved fame with scientific fantasies such as The Time Machine (1895) and War of the Worlds (1898), and wrote a range of comic social novels which proved highly popular, notably Kipps (1905) and The History of Mr Polly (1910). Both kinds of novel made successful (sometimes classic) early films. A member of the Fabian Society, he was often engaged in public controversy, and wrote several socio-political works dealing with the role of science and the need for world peace, such as The Outline of History (1920) and The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind (1932). www.biography.com BACK TO AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES

"Gottfrieb Plattner disappears after an explosion for nine days. Upon return, he recounts a strange tale of a parallel world. More mathematically interesting, he discovers that he is now left-handed, and his internal anatomy has apparently inverted left and right. This is attributed to the fourth-dimension." This famous early science fiction novel opens with a clever (and, if you think ahead to the role of Minkowski Space in special relativity, prophetic) lecture on "the fourth dimension". Of course, discussions of the fourth dimension as time (and the place where "sprits" live) were all the rage in the late 19th Century, but I like Wells' approach especially Particular things to note are the mention of a lecture by Simon Newcomb to the New York Mathematical Society, and the clever analogy between our inability to go backwards in time and the inability of a person falling through the air to go up. Here's an excerpt (follow the links above and below for the entire text available from ebooks): `You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or two ideas that are almost universally accepted. The geometry, for instance, they taught you at school is founded on a misconception.'
`It is simply this. That Space, as our mathematicians have it, is spoken of as having three dimensions, which one may call Length, Breadth, and Thickness, and is always definable by reference to three planes, each at right angles to the others. But some philosophical people have been asking why THREE dimensions particularlywhy not another direction at right angles to the other three?and have even tried to construct a Four-Dimension geometry. Professor Simon Newcomb was expounding this to the New York Mathematical Society only a month or so ago. You know how on a flat surface, which has only two dimensions, we can represent a figure of a three-dimensional solid, and similarly they think that by models of thee dimensions they could represent one of fourif they could master the perspective of the thing. See?'

He was born in Kent, England, on September 21, 1866. He died in London on August 13, 1946. What was Wells' childhood like? His parents, who had both been domestic servants, ran a small crockery shop. They lived in the same building and Wells would play with the bits and remains of crockery in the back yard. This family had but recently been servants, so there was not much time for "idle imagination." But Wells seemed to be always imagining far-off times and places and this was noted by parents and friends. He made castles and forts and little cities of Mars out of the shards and things he found in the rubbish behind his parents' shop. He read everything he could find. Reading took the boy out of the daily grind and gave him a window beyond the world of his small possibilities. What were Wells' prospects? In H.G. Wells' day, people of his income level and social standing were almost never able to attend college. But Wells was so adept at his studies that he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in Kensington in 1884. Normal Schools were teacher training colleges, not elite colleges, such as Oxford. He studied there with honors for one year under the science historian Thomas Henry Huxley. But something happened to Wells. His enthusiasm left him. He left Kensington without a degree. What did this break cause?

Les livres de Wells ont un ton moraliste et prophétisent les cataclysmes vers lesquels le "progrès" conduit l’humanité. HG (Herbert George) Wells
Writer England Born 21 Sep 1866
Died 13 Aug 1946
Herbert George Wells was born in 1866 and educated at a private school at Bromley, Midhurst Grammar School, and the Royal College of Science, where he studied biology with TE Huxley. He had two years' apprenticeship in a draper's shop, of which he made good use in 'Kipps' and 'The History of Mr Polly'. He then insisted on cancelling his indentures and tried teaching, before turning professional writer. He wrote more than a hundred books, including novels, essays, histories, and programmes for world regeneration.
Wells, who rose from obscurity to world fame, had an emotionally and intellectually turbulent life. An apostle of socialism, science and progress, he was, in Bertrand Russell's words, 'an important liberator of thought and action'. He outraged public opinion with his views on free love and the impermanence of marriage, expressed in the novels 'Ann Veronica' (1909) and 'The New Machiavelli' (1911). Wells wrote a number of fantasies; among the most famous are 'The Time Machine' (1895), 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' (1896), 'The Invisible Man' (1897), 'The War of the Worlds' (1898) and 'The Shape of Things to Come' (1933).
His novels about the world of shabby gentility, of which he had personal experience, are among his best fiction. They include 'Love and Mr Lewisham' (1900), 'Kipps' (1905), 'Tono-Bungay' (1909) and 'The History of Mr Polly' (1910). He also collaborated on a series of modern educational works: 'The Outline of History' (1920), 'The Science of Life' (1929) and 'The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind' (1932). His 'Experiment in Autobiography' (2 vols., 1934) reviews his world.
