EDWARD HIRSCH is the author most recently of How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry (1999, Harcourt, ISBN #0-15-600566-2). The book overflows with brilliant examples of the art, witty epigrams, apt metaphors, ingenious turns-of-phrase, and countless tips and words of advice about getting the most out of poetryan ecstatic form of communication in the author's view.
"Hirsch's contribution [to the study of poetry] is significant. Who could resist the wiles of this poetry-broker, a writer rapidly becoming the baby boomers' preeminent man of letters?" Detroit Free Press
"reading Hirsch's How to Read a Poem is like a very long evening with a learned and perceptive friend who keeps leaping up to his bookshelf for more and better illustrations, and find ever more connections and revelations." Boston Book Review On Love (Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), a collection of meditations on passion, sex and intimate friendship. As in much of Hirsch's previous work, the poet impersonates the points-of-view of numerous writers and thinkers from the past. The characters who speak in

Colette
by Edward Hirsch
My mother used to say, "Sit down, dear,
and don't cry. The worst thing for a woman
is her first manthe one who kills you.
After that, marriage becomes a long career." Poor Sido! She never had another career and she knew first-hand how love ruins you. The seducer doesn't care about his woman, even as he whispers endearments in her ear. Never let anyone destroy your inner spirit. Among all the forms of truly absurd courage the recklessness of young girls is outstanding. Otherwise there would be far fewer marriages and even fewer affairs that overwhelm marriages. Look at me: it's amazing I'm still standing after what I went through with ridiculous courage. I was made to suffer, but no one broke my spirit. Every woman wants her adventure to be a feast of ripening cherries and peaches, Marseilles figs, hot-house grapes, champagne shuddering in crystal. Happiness, we believe, is on sumptuous display. But unhappiness writes a different kind of play.

Edward Hirsch Edward Hirsch Edward Hirsch was described by the current president of the Guggenheim Foundation, Joel Conarroe, as "an ebullient spirit whose passion for literature is contagious." All those who have known Hirsch during his long career as a professor at the University of Houston Creative Writing Program or as an "articulate champion" (also Conarroe's phrase) for poetry in Houston and throughout the world can confirm the aptness of this description. Born in Chicago in 1950 and educated at Grinnell College and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Ph.D. in folklore, Hirsch is the author of five books of poetry, including his most recent, On Love (1998). His first collection, For the Sleepwalkers (1981), received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from the American Academy of Poets and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award from New York University. His second book of poems, Wild Gratitude (1986), received the National Book Critics Circle Award, and The Night Parade (1989) and Earthly Measures (1994) were both New York Times Notable Books of the Year. DoubleTake 6
E S S A Y Read these poems to yourself in the middle of the night. Turn on a single lamp and read them while you're alone in an otherwise dark room or while someone else sleeps next to you. Read them when you're wide awake in the early morning, fully alert. Say them over to yourself in a place where silence reigns and the din of the culturethe constant buzzing noise that surrounds ushas momentarily stopped. These poems have come from a great distance to find you. I think of Malebranche's maxim, "Attentiveness is the natural prayer of the soul." This maxim, beloved by Simone Weil and Paul Celan, quoted by Walter Benjamin in his magisterial essay on Kafka, can stand as a writer's credo. It also serves for readers. Paul Celan wrote: A poem, as a manifestation of language and thus essentially dialogue, can be a message in a bottle, sent out in thenot always greatly hopefulbelief that somewhere and sometime it could wash up on land, on heartland perhaps. Poems in this sense are under way: they are making a poem, as a manifestation of language and thus essentially dialogue, can be a message in a bottle, sent out in thenot always greatly hopefulbelief that somewhere and sometime it could wash up on land, on heartland perhaps. Poems in this sense are under way: they are making toward something. Thus it is for each of us who read poems, who become the secret addressees of literary texts. I am at home in the middle of the night and suddenly hear myself being called, as if by name. I go over and take down the bookthe message in the bottlebecause tonight I am its recipient, its posterity, its heartland.
