James P Hogan James P Hogan was born in London in 1941 of an Irish father and a German mother. He grew up around the Portobello Road area of London, and took to reading whilst hiking and camping around the mountains in Wales and Scotland. A successful scholarship examination got him into the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough to take a five-year course in electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering. This all led to him working as a design engineer, for both industrial and academic applications, and eventually led him into computers. Having travelled all over Europe as a sales engineer, in 1977 he found himself in Massachusetts, working for Digital Equipment Corporation's Laboratory Data Processing Group. At the same time as all this was happening, James has his first novel, Inherit the Stars, published by Del Rey in 1977. By 1979, and with four books published, he quit the day job to concentrate on being a full-time writer. James is firmly planted at the hard science end of the science-fiction spectrum, and continues to write prolifically. He has 22 novels published so far, with another due in the summer of 2003. He has also written one non-fiction book

contemporary British sci-fi author James P. Hogan was born in London, father Irish, mother German.
He is author of several important novels, including a recent novel about parallel worlds Paths To Otherwhere
The author says himself:
Jim Baen of Baen Books had been telling me for some time that he would like to see some titles of mine on his list. This was the first.
The Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics is a godsend to s.f. writers looking for a theoretical basis to build an alternative-world story on. I used it myself for The Proteus Operation But it was David Deutsch, a quantum physicist at Oxford University, who persuaded me that the MWI was actually real.
Or suppose that, for example in the course of experiments involving a technology that explores this new extension of physics, the flow of perceptions being experienced by an individual were not coming from his own body receiving impressions in this reality at all, but diverted from a counterpart personality in a nearby but different reality. In that event, as the subject "tuned into" other versions of himself progressively "farther away," he would have the curious experience of finding himself among people who disagreed more and more about what the past was.
Eventually, as the process becomes better understood, we achieve the capability of experiencing, through distant other "selves," totally different realities with circumstances unlike anything we imagined, each the result of history following a different course.

Inherit The Stars
Reviewed December 1997 If you enjoy science fiction "mysteries" and can handle a book which is conspicuously short on characterization, then you might enjoy this one. The premise is simple: On the year 2028, humanity has colonized the Moon and has sent manned missions as far out as Jupiter, with Saturn not far off. In a cave in the side of a cliff on the Moon's Nearside is made an incredible discovery: A human body, inside a bright red spacesuit. The body is dated as having lived 50,000 years ago, before humanity was known to have existed, and the spacesuit contains technology more advanced than anything on Earth. The basic questions behind the book, then, are: Where did "Charlie" come from, what was he doing on the Moon so long ago, and what does his existence say about what we know about our own species? The book proceeds from several basic premises: First, that Charlie has to be related to us, because evolution's random nature doesn't allow for the possibility of parallel evolution. Second, it seems clear his civilization did not exist on Earth, because not one shred of it has ever been discovered. Using these invariants, and other discoveries made during the course of the novel, the main characters piece together the story of Charlie's history. The joy of a book like this is seeing what the author has in mind, and seeing if you can make the one or two crucial leaps of logic before the heroes do. It's not a book of characters or conflict, but a book of mystery and discovery. To his credit, Hogan gets the story told in just over 200 pages, as it might get tedious had it been extended much farther. But as a quick, intriguing read

JAMES P. HOGAN interviewed in
February 1993 James P. Hogan's Home Page James P. Hogan was born in London in 1941, his father Irish and his mother German. After studying general electrical and mechanical engineering, he graduated as an electronics engineer specializing in digital systems. Later he became a sales executive in the electronics and computer industries with such companies as ITT, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corporation, and eventually a Sales Training Consultant with DEC's scientific computing group at Marlborough, Massachusetts. He began writing science fiction as a hobby in the mid 1970s, and his works have been well received within the professional scientific community as well as among regular science-fiction readers. In 1979 he left DEC to become a full-time writer. Hogan's work falls at the hard-science end of the sf spectrum and has a positive outlook. He is anti-Malthusian and doesn't share the cynicism toward technology and the concept of human progress that appears fashionable in some social circles. He does not think we're about to overpopulate the planet, blow ourselves into oblivion, poison ourselves into extinction, degenerate into Nazis, or disappear under our own garbage. For ten thousand years the power of human reason and creativity has continued to build better tomorrows, and Hogan sees nothing that says it's all about to change now.
