From ``The Genesis Machine'' , by James P. Hogan
Published by Ballantine Books, New York, 1978. Professor Richard Edwards, Principal Scientific Executive and second-in-command at ACRE, contemplated the document lying on the table in front of him. The wording on the title sheet read: K-Space Rotations and Gravity Impulses . Seated around the corner of the table to the professor's left, Walter Massey thumbed idly through his copy, making little of the pages of complex formulae. Opposite Massey, Miles Corrigan leaned back in his chair and regarded Clifford with a cool, predatory stare, making no attempt to conceal the disdain that he felt toward all scientists. ``The rules of this Establishment are perfectly clear, Dr. Clifford,'' Edwards began, speaking over the top of his interlaced fingers. ``All scientific material produced by any person during the time he is employed at ACRE, produced in the course of his duties or otherwise, automatically qualifies as classified information. Precisely what are your grounds for requesting an exemption and permission to publish this paper?'' Clifford returned his look expressionlessly, trying hard for once not to show the irritation he felt for the whole business. He didn't like the air of an Inquisition that had pervaded the room ever since they sat down.

From ``Giant's Star'' , by James P. Hogan.
Published by Ballantine Books, New York, 1981. ``We can move objects from place to place instantaneously by means of artificially generated spinning black holes,'' Eesyan told them. ``As your own theories predict, a rapidly spinning black hole flattens out into a disk, and eventually becomes a toroid with the mass concentrated at the rim. In that situation the singularity exists across the central aperture and can be approached axially without catastrophic tidal effects. The aperture affords an `entry port' into a hyperrealm described by laws not subject to the conventional restrictions of ordinary space-time. Creating such an entry port also gives rise to a hypersymmetric effect that appears as a projection elsewhere in normal space, and which functions as a coupled exit port. By controlling the dimensions, spin, orientation, and certain other parameters of the initial hole, we can select with considerable accuracy the location of the exit up to distances in the order of several tens of light-years.'' ``That must be how you got the perceptron to Earth,'' Hunt said.

James P. Hogan
James P. Hogan was born in London in 1941, his father Irish and his mother German. After studying general electrical and mechanical engineering, he graduated as an electronics engineer specializing in digital systems. Later he became a sales executive in the electronics and computer industries with such companies as ITT, Honeywell, and Digital Equipment Corporation, and eventually a Sales Training Consultant with DEC's scientific computing group at Marlborough, Massachusetts. He began writing science fiction as a hobby in the mid 1970's, and his works have been well received within the professional scientific community as well as among regular science-fiction readers. In 1979 he left DEC to become a full-time writer. Hogan's work falls at the hard-science end of the sf spectrum and has a positive outlook. He is anti-Malthusian and doesn't share the cynicism toward technology and the concept of human progress that appears fashionable in some social circles. He does not think we're about to overpopulate the planet, blow ourselves into oblivion, poison ourselves into extinction, degenerate into Nazis, or disappear under our own garbage. "For ten thousand years," he writes, "the power of human reason and creativity has continued to build better tomorrows, and nothing says that has to change now. Humanity's material problems are in effect solved. The real difficulties confronting us today are not to do with energy and resources, but are social and political."

Snider Martian Knightlife contains two related novellas by SF veteran James P. Hogan. In "His Own Worst Enemy", it's the not-too-distant future, and Mars has become one of humanity's new frontiers. Bustling settlements compete with one another and with other colonies throughout the solar system to attract immigrants and tourists. Kieran Thane, nicknamed "the Knight", often interrupts his space travels and entrepreneurial enterprises to take up the cause of some underdog or another whom he encounters. Arriving on Mars, Kieran meets up with his sometimes-girlfriend June, who works for an influential research firm called Quantonix. She confides to Kieran that Quantonix has secretly developed a teleportation device - in fact, the project's chief researcher, an ambitious man named Leo Sarda, has successfully teleported himself! June introduces Sarda to the understandably curious Kieran - but they are soon disturbed by what appear to be gaps in Sarda's memory. Digging deeper, they discover that the teleportation isn't exactly as advertised. The device doesn't just transport things - it copies them. Sarda Two's dirty little secret is that the original Sarda's body was held in statis until the experiment was deemed a success, and later destroyed.

Cradle Of Saturn
James P. Hogan
SOJALS rating Awful (0/5) I first read this in March 2001. Oh dear why do I keep giving in, against my better judgement, and buy these books? Hogan packs these books full of exciting ideas, drama, carefully constructed plots and what comes out? A book that I have to force myself to read just to see if any of the good ideas pan-out into something thought-provoking, and all the time fighting the urge to just close the book and give it to someone I don’t like. Look at this: "While it was still morning in California, a train of meteorite impacts stitched it’s way like a gigantic bombing run over the tip of South America and across the southern Atlantic to beyond the Falkland islands" Now this is stirring stuff and I should have been gripped tight with tension, shotting Tequila, smoking furiously and with some loud rock blasting away in the background. But no, I’m laying on the floor the radio’s playing some anonymous J-pop, I’m wondering whether there might be something on the TV and should I just check, and my arm is getting really tired turning the pages. So what’s wrong with Hogan’s books? Beats me, I’ve read half a dozen since the ‘70s (can’t remember the ‘60s, of course) and they never quite make it. I never believe in the characters, I’m never convinced by the plot and I never enjoy them. Well, it’s either me or the writing. So it’s the writing.

James P atrick Hogan (G.B. 1941) A conquista das estrelas (Voyage from Yesteryear)
Mensagem do futuro (Thrice Upon a Time)
