The Creative Kids Education Foundation This Web site presents Horace's Villa near Licenza , Italy and our project jointly undertaken there in the period 1997-2001 under the institutional sponsorship of the American Academy in Rome, UCLA, and the Archaeological Superintendency for Lazio of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The project is made possible by the generous support of the Steinmetz Family of Los Angeles, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, The Creative Kids Education Foundation, and the Vincenzo Romagnoli Group. During the five years of fieldwork, over 100 volunteers from twelve countries came to Licenza to donate their labor and talents. We are very grateful to all of our sponsors and volunteers, without whom our project would never have been possible! Quintus Horatius Flaccus (" Horace " in English) lived from 65 to 8 B.C. and was Rome's leading poet of lyric and satiric poetry in the Golden Age of Roman literature under the Emperor Augustus. His villa near Licenza, Italy (35 miles northeast of Rome) is the only house of a Roman writer of the Augustan Age that can be identified and visited today. As such, it is a precious part of our heritage and repays studyespecially since Horace wrote so much about the place he called "the fulfillment of all my hopes and prayers."

INTRODUCTION
Born on a hardscrabble New Hampshire farm and apprenticed to a Vermont printer at age 15, Horace Greeley worked his way to prominence as founding editor of the New York Tribune , one of the first "penny daily" newspapers. In addition to the daily Tribune , Greeley published a weekly edition that reached at its height nearly a million readers throughout the United States and western territories, and which gave the celebrated and eccentric editor an enormous influence on American popular opinion. REFORMER AND GADFLY
As a youth the precocious Greeley devoured all the books and newspapers he could find, and his passion for detail was reflected in the Tribune's closely packed mass of facts, statistics, correspondence, fiction, poetry, lectures, and reviews. His fierce New England-style sense of morality was displayed in trenchant editorials advocating a mixture of his own social reformist causes, such as workers' rights and temperance, with more conservative Whig positions on protective tariffs, internal improvements, and recharter of the Bank of the United States. Greeley also argued in favor of guaranteed employment, and grants of public land to industrious settlers. The exact words often attributed to him"go West, young man"were actually first written by an Indiana editor, John Soule, but Greeley himself, while not an expansionist, was a staunch proponent of organized western settlement and expressed many similarly phrased versions of this sentiment. In 1859 he traveled overland to California, sending dispatches back to the

The Story of horace and Baby Doe Tabor from the Leadville Magazine Online.
http://www.leadville.com/history/tabor.htm

Leadville's Famous Love Triangle:
Horace, Augusta & "Baby Doe" Tabor
On March 7, 1935, Baby Doe Tabor was found dead of a heart attack in her small shack at the famous Matchless Mine, just outside Leadville, Colorado. She had, for whatever reason, adopted the storage shack at the Matchless Mine as her living quarters since her husband's death in 1899, 35 years earlier. Contrary to popular belief, she did not "hold on to the Matchless as it will pay millions again," as some have incorrectly reported were Horace Tabor's deathbed words. The Matchless Mine had long since been lost to foreclosure and had failed to produce even with several new attempts on the part of the new owners. Baby Doe was living in the tiny cabin only due to the generosity of the current owners of the worthless mine. This incredible story has captured the imagination of the world for decades. The Gulch had been panned out, however and by 1862, the Tabors had left the area, heading back east over Mosquito Pass. Horace had built a cabin in Buckskin Joe and had become involved in community affairs there... he ran a grocery store, was appointed postmaster and was elected to the school board.

The most frequent themes in Horace's ODES and verse EPISTLES are love, pleasures of friendship and simple life, and the art of poetry. When writings of a number of other Roman poets disappeared after the fall of the Roman empire, Horace's oeuvre survived and influenced deeply Western literature. In his own time Horace could boast that his ARS POETICA was sold on the banks of the Bosphorus, in Spain, in Gaul, and in Africa. " This used to be among my prayers - a piece of land not so very large, which would contain a garden, and near the house a spring of ever-flowing water, and beyond these a bit of wood." Quintus Horatius Flaccus - known in the English-speaking world as Horace - was born at Venusia (Venosa). His father was a former slave, who had worked as a tax collector. As a businessman he earned enough money to buy a small estate and educate the future poet in Rome. Later Horace expressed his deep gratitude to his father who not only supervised his early education but also influenced his moral training. When Horace about 19-years old, he continued his studies of philosophy in Athens. After Julius Caesar's murder in March 44 B.C., Horace joined Marcus Brutus' army and gained the rank of military tribune.
