Hypatia was the daughter of the mathematician and philosopher Theon of Alexandria and it is fairly certain that she studied mathematics under the guidance and instruction of her father. It is rather remarkable that Hypatia became head of the Platonist school at Alexandria in about 400 AD. There she lectured on mathematics and philosophy, in particular teaching the philosophy of Neoplatonism . Hypatia based her teachings on those of Plotinus , the founder of Neoplatonism, and Iamblichus who was a developer of Neoplatonism around 300 AD. Plotinus taught that there is an ultimate reality which is beyond the reach of thought or language. The object of life was to aim at this ultimate reality which could never be precisely described. Plotinus stressed that people did not have the mental capacity to fully understand both the ultimate reality itself or the consequences of its existence. Iamblichus distinguished further levels of reality in a hierarchy of levels beneath the ultimate reality. There was a level of reality corresponding to every distinct thought of which the human mind was capable. Hypatia taught these philosophical ideas with a greater scientific emphasis than earlier followers of Neoplatonism. She is described by all commentators as a charismatic teacher.

The Legend I first came across Hypatia's story in 1980 when I attended Judy Chicago's groundbreaking feminist art exhibit "The Dinner Party." Chicago and her team selected thirty-nine subjects for an elaborate dinner party, where each "guest" (including several goddesses) was honored for her contributions to womankind with a specially designed plate and table runner. In the accompanying book, Hypatia is described as "a Roman scholar and philosopher who lived in Alexandria...she stressed the importance of goddesses and the feminine aspects of culture." The article details the pagan philosopher's death at the hands of a Christian mob. I was hooked - caught up in the romanticism and inherent drama of Hypatia's life. During her time, Hypatia was known as a philosopher or teacher, a very rare role for a woman. Hypatia also struggled as a female and a pagan in an increasingly Christian society. No actual documents of Hypatia's own mathematical work are known to exist. However it is strongly suggested that her work included the study of the Diophantus Arithmetica, or what we today would call Diophantine Equations. It also is believed that Hypatia studied conic sections and wrote a book about the Conics of Apollonius, or conic sections, as well as having an interest in the work of Euclid and Ptolemy. In March of 415, on her way to teach at the university, Hypatia came to a tragic end. The circumstances surrounding her death are linked to political and religious differences between Orestes, Prefect of Alexandria and a friend of Hypatia, and Cyril, the Archbishop of Alexandria. Hypatia of Alexandria was a female neo-Platonic philosopher who died at the hands of Christian monks in AD at an unknown age. She was the daughter of Theon, the last fellow of the Museum of Alexandria, which was adjacent to or included the main Library of Alexandria . Hypatia did not teach in the Museum, she received her pupils in her own private home. Theophilus , the patriarch of Alexandria, had destroyed all "pagan temples" in the city in 391 (as requested by a decree of the Emperor Theodosius ), which may have included the Museum and certainly included the Serapeum (a temple and "daughter library" to the Great Library). The Museum was the "Temple of the Muses", so it was a temple according to Theodosius' decree. Hypatia clearly lived during a power struggle between pagans and tolerant Christians on the one side, and dogmatic Christians who demanded the final destruction of paganism on the other. Hypatia herself was a pagan, but was respected by many Christians, and exalted by some (though by no means all) later Christian authors as a symbol of virtue, often portrayed as a life-long virgin. These later accounts should not be seen as strict historical records, though, as they often contradict each other.

Hypatia , the daughter of Theon of Alexandria, was born in about 370 AD. she is the earliest woman scientist whose works have been documented. As a young woman, she traveled to Athens and Italy. Upon her return to Alexandria, she became a philosopher and mathematician. She was appointed to expound the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle and was a noted lecturer on the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. Most of her writings dealt with mathematics, especially algebra. Her most noted work, called Arithmetica, was a commentary on the writings of Diophantus. Hypatia also wrote an explanation of the geometry works of Apollonius of Perga, which was titled, On the Conics of Apollonius. Later in her career she worked with Theon and coauthored a work on Euclid's geometry which is titled Elements. In addition to her mathematical works, Hypatia also developed an apparatus for distilling water, an instrument for measuring the level of water, a plane astrolabe (for measuring the positions of the stars, planets, and sun) and a graduated brass hydrometer for determining the specific gravity of a liquid. Hypatia's philosophical beliefs were in conflict with the views of the Christian rulers of the city of Alexandria. When Cyril, a fanatical Christian, became Partiarch of Alexadria in 412 AD he began a persecution of scholars in the city. Hypatia Hypatia is the first known woman mathematician, scientist and philosopher. She was born in Egypt in 370 AD. Unlike most other gifted girls of her time, she was given an education - by her liberal-minded father Theon, a respected mathematician and astronomer at the Alexandria Library (we'd call it a university). And she was able to get a job there teaching mathematics and philosophy. She was a very good lecturer and students came from all over to attend her talks. The fact that she was very pretty certainly didn't keep people away either! Her specialities were esoteric aspects of geometry and algebra, but she was also interested in the practical side of the world, inventing an astrolabe, hygrometer and water distiller amongst others. As a philosopher, her advice was much sought after by the administrators of Alexandria. And the common people - she would often give impromptu lectures in streets to any passer-by who asked her. But her influence and gender made enemies, notably Cyril, the main Christian leader at Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey). She was not a Christian, and her friends urged her to leave the increasingly fanatical people of Alexandria. She refused, saying that "even if my life is in danger, what good is a life that one does not live as one chooses?" Tragedy happened in March 415 AD. She was driving her chariot home when she was attacked by a mob that dragged her out and brutally scraped her flesh from her bones with sharp shells. They then cut up her body and burnt it. It is generally (there are exceptions) agreed amongst historians that the mob was of Christian fanatics.
