John Keats
John Keats was born on 31 October 1795, the first of Frances Jennings and Thomas Keats's five children (one of whom died in infancy). His parents had been wed for barely a year when John was born. His maternal grandparents, John and Alice Jennings, were well-off and, upon his parents' marriage, had entrusted the management of their livery business to Thomas. These stables, called the 'Swan and Hoop', were located in north London and provided horses for hire to adjacent neighborhoods.
Thomas and Frances lived at the stables through the births of their first three children. George was born on 28 February 1797 and Thomas on 18 November 1799. After their births, the young couple felt successful enough to move to a separate house on Craven Street, about a half-mile from the business. Here, on 28 April 1801, their son Edward was born; he died shortly thereafter. And on 3 June 1803, the last of their children and only daughter, Frances Mary, was born. Details of Keats's early life are scarce. During the last few years of his life, letters allow one to track him virtually week-to-week but his childhood and adolescence are another matter. Indeed, virtually all the information known is in the form of reminisces, many taken years after Keats had died. Understandably, one must view these memories with some skepticism. Whether discussing Keats's physical appearance (his brother George said he resembled their mother while a family friend said it was the father) or his pastimes, these sources contradict one another.

    The first poem I ever read by Keats was "When I Have Fears." And from that moment on, I was hooked. But you may be asking yourself...who the heck is this Keats guy? Well, let me tell you.
    John Keats was born in in London in 1795 and died of tuberculosis in Italy in 1821. But the magic that was created in those 26 years is what he is known for. Some say that if Keats had not died so young, he would have been the next Shakespeare. I can't say for sure, being a great fan of the Baird, but Keats' poetry is certainly up there with the greats. So without further adieu, here is what I have to show you of this extremely talented young man....

    John Keats
    Search all of John Keats English lyric poet, the archetype of the Romantic writer. While still in good health, Keats was the opposite of overburdened, sensitive soul. Keats felt that the deepest meaning of life lay in the apprehension of material beauty, although his mature poems reveal his fascination with a world of death and decay. Most of his best work appeared in one year.
    Keats was born in London as the son of a livery-stable manager. He was the oldest of four children, who remained deeply devoted to each other. After their father died in 1804, Keats's mother remarried but the marriage was soon broken. She moved with the children, John and his sister Fanny and brothers George and Tom, to live with her mother at Edmonton, near London. She died of tuberculosis in 1810.
    At school Keats read widely. He was educated at Clarke's School in Enfield, where he began a translation of the Aeneid. 1811 he was apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary. His first poem, 'Lines in Imitation of Spenser', was written in 1814. In that year he moved to London and resumed his surgical studies in 1815 as a student at Guy's hospital. Next year he became a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. Before devoting himself entirely to poetry, Keats worked as a dresser and junior house surgeon. In London he had met the editor of The Examiner, Leigh Hunt, who introduced him to other young Romantics, including Shelley. His poem, 'O Solitude', also appeared in The Examiner.
