One Side of Kipling
By William M. Salter
The Ethical Record 2 (Oct.-Nov. 1900). T In Kipling these thoughts, these sentiments, these very words appear to have vanished. It is said by those who have read him carefully that the word "freedom" does not occur in his books. Certainly he has no song in praise of liberty and I remember scarcely an instance in which he shows sympathy with an oppressed people or class. The soldier is the man he celebrates and his praises are almost all of war. For the Czar's late peace-proposal, which struck almost all the world as pathetically sincere, he had only a sneer. He appears not to believe in the brotherhood of the nations and looks forward to "the last great fight of all" in which Anglo-Saxon supremacy on the earth shall be triumphantly asserted. Tennyson's great dream of "a Parliament of Man, a Federation of the World" has faded out of his mind. It is not that it is utopian merely; apparently he does not wish it. It is this side of Kipling that I wish to take up. I do not forget that there is another. There is unquestionable charm and an entirely innocent charm in the "Jungle Books." For the lover of good stories he has spread an abundant banquet there are ten or twelve volumes of them. The world of India is made very real to one after reading them, and so is life on the sea. He takes us into strange places and among strange peoples; he recites wild adventures, and he admires pluck and hard work everywhere, and all this is well. But it is as the poet of militant England and militant America, of a militant ethics and a militant religion, that I wish to consider him.

Anti-Imperialist Writings by William Dean Howells
By Jim Zwick
Photograph of William Dean Howells
D uring their lifetimes, Mark Twain and William Dean Howells (1837-1920) were closely linked when their anti-imperialist writings were considered. In a 1903 tract, The Principles of the Founders , Edwin D. Mead, the prominent Boston-based anti-imperialist, peace advocate, and cousin of Howells's wife, highlighted the two writers as representing literary anti-imperialism outside of Massachusetts. This was natural. Arguably the two most prominent and influential literary figures of their time, Howells and Twain were close friends, and they frequently discussed imperialism and the war in the Philippines in private talks and correspondence. Howells's association with the anti-imperialist movement began as early as April of 1898 when he joined Bolton Hall , Henry Codman Potter, Ernest H. Crosby Josephine Shaw Lowell and others in " A Peace Appeal to Labor " against the Spanish-American War. In October of the following year, stating that he was "heart and soul" with the organization, Howells joined Hall, Crosby

Morrow, $16 (0-688-14320-2); lib. ed., $15.93 (0-688-14321-0). Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. In Kipling's classic story, the brave young mongoose, Rikki-tikki-tavi, proves his worth through his courage and audacity. Saved from near drowning and exposure by an English family living in India, Rikki-tikki repays their kindness with his brave actions. In the family's garden live the evil cobras Nag and Nagaina and a smaller but equally dangerous snake. Each of the snakes tries to bite the little English boy or his parents, but a formidable Rikki-tikki attacks and kills the snakes. Dramatic in content, sensitive in line, and rich with color, the illustrations in this picture book make full use of the broad, double-page spreads. Children who are not familiar with the story will be captivated; those who have had the story read to them before will find new things to shiver over. In an author's note, Pinkney explains how he came to illustrate the story, which had resonance for him as a child. A beautiful edition for reading aloud. Carolyn Phelan (Booklist/September 1, 1997)

Died: 18th January, 1936. He was called Rudyard after Lake Rudyard in Staffordshire where his parents had met. Page 1 Important works Rudyard Kipling is well-known for his children's tales, especially The Jungle Book (1894) and its sequel The Second Jungle Book Just So Stories Puck of Pook's Hall Rewards and Fairies (1910) and his novel of India, Kim (1901). His poem If has been voted one of Britain's best loved poems on National Poetry Day. A best-seller in his time, Kipling was widely read by ordinary people. It is said that he made a similar impact on his age as Dickens had done before him. Description was his strength and early readers felt that he had brought a new world - India - into prose and verse which "seemed to embrace the whole world of India, from the garrison hacks of Simla to the stinking alleys of Lahore; from the jewels and treacheries of maharajahs to the bellowing sergeants on parade grounds..." and he aroused interest in the soldier's life in India. His novel, Kim, has been praised for its understanding of different races and creeds. Page 1 Enid Blyton Frances Hodgson Burnett Thomas Hardy Hari Kunzru ... 30.
