They loved the poems written by other children... Read more

Pondering the Orientations of Kenneth, we are
wondering if Chinese restaurants are not unknown to this gentleman. He steps jauntily to the mirror, his reflected youthfulness dazzling the other diners and the waitresses too. Now he writes a poem, and garnishes it with a colon! a pop, a flash, and a small, perfectly-formed miasma has entirely replaced him. Grieving this deprivation, the skies are overcast. no, from the shopping malls of steamy Miami to the brothels of bourbon-dark Jacksonville a draught of Koch is known as a certain cure about God, and vice versa, dispersing and hiding

The poet gives a reading at UC and the Main Public Library By John Stoehr Kenneth Koch
Kenneth Koch feels lucky he can write a lot of poetry. And write a lot, he does. After 21 volumes of poetry, three works of fiction, nine books of non-fiction, 21 avant-garde plays and parodies, and countless articles for newspapers and magazines, this 75-year-old Cincinnati native continues to write at a remarkable rate. As one of the founding members of the so-called New York school of poets in the 1950s, voluminous output seems only natural. And being prolific wasn't the only thing that came naturally: Innovation was what defined the New York school. The '50s was an era dominated by New Critical literary theory whose predominant figurehead was the draconian T.S Eliot, author of The Waste Land . Poetry, therefore, according to Koch, suffered from acute boredom and sterility, and Koch and other poets of his generation felt suffocated by the established poetic hegemony. So they forged technical and conceptual innovations to combat poetic tedium.

    http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bw/oct02/koch.html
    Prof. Kenneth Koch
The Blue and White was saddened to learn of the passing of Kenneth Koch this summer, at the age of 77, of leukemia. Koch, an award-winning poet of the New York School, was also a longtime professor at Columbia, teaching and inspiring nearly 40 years of students at CU. Below, three of Professor Koch's students share memories of their time with him, and his influence on them. Following these remembrances is Koch's poem, "One Train May Hide Another," reprinted with permission from the Estate of Kenneth Koch. Before I met Kenneth Koch, I had no idea what poetry was. One confronts it in high school with an amalgam of fear, distrust, disdain, perhaps awe. What are these arcane receptacles of codified knowledge, sometimes rhymed, sometimes not, often baffling, seldom kept in mind at lunchtime? There is a meaning to be grasped, remarks the teacher. And after the sacred ceremony in which the meaning is found, like the secret of the lemonade inside a frozen concentrated lemonade can, we can sigh audibly, slump forward, scratch at a big toe, and wonder when we shall return to reading novels like normal people. I peeked out from under sheaves of Edward Arlington Robinson and wondered if something was wrong. On arrival Professor Koch's Form in Poetry class in the spring of my freshman year, this minor doubt, this crack I thought I had found in the facade of poetry's formal banality grew to a mighty gorge. In the temple of Apollo, one was shocked to learn, there were not only archaic Grecian torsos, but also beach balls of varying sizes.

The honor is accorded only to 250 Americans in art, literature and music and is considered the highest formal recognition of artistic merit in this country. Koch will join them along with nine other new members who include jazz composer Benny Carter and authors Oliver Sacks and Elie Wiesel. Six Columbia emeriti faculty are already members: Jacques Barzun, Jack Beeson, Chou Wen-chung, Donald Keene, Otto Luening and Romaldo Giurgola. A professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia since 1959, Koch has published more than a dozen books of poetry and is a playwright and essayist. He has been called "a genius of exuberance... witty, urbane, and outrageously improvisatory." His books on teaching poetry to children and the elderly are widely used handbooks for educators. The Academy will also honor two other Columbia writers: Lucie Brock-Broido will be awarded the $2,500 Witter Bynner Poetry Prize for young poets. She is an associate professor in the School of the Arts and directs the poetry program there. She has written two volumes of poetry, A Hunger (1988) and The Master Letters Randall Kenan will receive the Rome Fellowship in Literature, a one-year residency at the American Academy in Rome.
