Nancy Kress Nancy Kress is a celebrated writer of science fiction novels and short stories, as well as science-themed mystery stories. Her science fiction work often explores the implications of modern biological research in near-future settings. Perhaps her most famous set of books, the "Beggars" trilogy, speculates brilliantly on the future consequences of genetic "improvements" in human intelligence on world society. Her recent short story collection, Beaker's Dozen , addresses such issues as cloning and genetic engineering. Ms. Kress is also the "Fiction" columnist for Writer's Digest Magazine , and has published two books on creative writing. She has won two Nebula awards and one Hugo award. Philadelphia, PA Nancy Kress is the author of eighteen books: three fantasy novels, seven SF novels, two thrillers, three collections of short stories, one YA novel, and two books on writing fiction. She is perhaps best known for the "Sleepless" trilogy that began with BEGGARS IN SPAIN, which was based on a Nebula- and Hugo-winning novella of the same name. She has won three Nebulas for her short fiction: in 1985 for "Out Of All Them Bright Stars," in 1991 for the novella version of "Beggars In Spain" (which also won a Hugo), and in 1998 for "The Flowers of Aulit Prison." In addition to writing fiction, Kress regularly teaches at various writing conferences including Clarions East (University of Michigan) and West (Seattle). She is the monthly "Fiction" columnist for Writer's Digest magazine, which she regards as a sort of extension of teaching. She now lives in Maryland with her husband, Charles Sheffield , who also writes science fiction.

Kress took up writing when pregnant with her second son, Brian. A good thing for us she was no good at quilting or embroidery, her first two choices of stay-at-home hobby.
She was married to equally popular author Charles Sheffield until his death in 2002.

Stinger ... Beaker's Dozen
A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement document.write(''); Avon is initiating a new series of Young Adult books, called David Brin's Out of Time . The central conceit is that sometime in the 24th century, the people of Earth have solved their basic problems. To quote: "Violence. Desperation. Disease. Poverty. Hunger." Now they face both a gift and a threat: aliens have gifted humans with some advanced technology, which allows for faster-than-light space travel, and also limited time-travel. But other aliens, not necessarily so nice, have received the same gift, and they regard humans as rivals in following the Gift Givers' "Nine Steps" to further advancement.
