This is a book full of Robert Kroetsch. The field notes are his notes in an investigation of Kroetsch's origins, Kroetsch growing up, Kroetsch the man, Kroetsch the lover, Kroctsch the poet. And that's only the first hundred pages. Strange that so much of Kroetsch keeps us interested. It may be that we feel that we really are uncovering something in this dig. Part of the intrigue, too, is the novel laying-out of the finds. There are double columns of print, margin-annotated free verse, chunks of prose, unrhymed couplets, caesura-ed lines, italics, repetitions dancing on the page, and the whole thing taking on a lumbering life. In the second part, "Advice to My Friends," Kroetsch expands and adds Kroetsch the traveller, Kroetsch the knower of exotic women, Kroetsch the friend of other famous writers, and Kroetsch the father of two daughters. Even the name dropping is done well. Students who take the journey and keep their minds open will find the bones of novels in some of the long poems. Ian Dempsey, Cambridge, ON.

Buy it online Read a review of The Man from the Creeks "We use stories to give shape to our experiences. Service did it so well that it's difficult to get past him. By having my narrator spring forth from the poem, I got loose. A character created by Service talking back to Service, correcting him, so to speak." Robert Kroetsch certainly takes his time in composing novels. His newest one, The Man from the Creeks , which is set in Canada's 1897-99 Klondike gold rush, appeared six years after his previous work, The Puppeteer , which had followed the publication of Alibi way back in 1983. Reports are that The Man from the Creeks went through 13 versions and at least one title change (from Klondike Love Song ) before it was ready for submission. Yet this British Columbian author and former creative-writing teacher is hardly ever idle, producing poetry and essays. And while he may not be as prolific as some better-known fictionists, he certainly hasn't suffered among critics for that fact. He won Canada's 1969 Governor General's Award for The Studhorse Man , and each new novel since seems to fetch him a fresh round of praise from reviewers, even if those people don't always quite understand Kroetsch's resistance to the conventions of modern prose writing, his interest in the arcana of his subject matter, or his often-sly humor.

It is the ability of an immigrant to re-invent themselves; the willingness to pursue a dream, that enriches and renews a nation. This is the courage that Carl Bessai explores in his film about Canadian writer, Robert Kroetsch and his German roots. Robert Kroetsch is a prominent Canadian novelist and poet. He was born in his grandparent's homestead shack in Heisler, Alberta. The town was settled by ethnic Germans whose descendants farm the region to this day. Kroetsch's paternal great-great-grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1841, pushed out by the industrial revolution. He settled in Ontario and built a watermill. When new technologies and diminishing forests killed that dream, Kroetsch moved his family West, to homestead. The Kroetsch family history mirrors the efforts of so many pioneers who carved out lives through hardship and adversity. As Robert Kroetsch so eloquently puts it, "I am no different from my grandfather who first came to Canada like so many new Canadians, I have kept moving, exploring and redefining myself in the geography of the land." Kroetsch draws heavily on his early life as inspiration for his poetry and prose. In Field Notes, he documents family history in poetic fragments which describe the struggle to adjust to a new life in Canada. His novel, The Studhorse Man has been honoured with a Governor General's Award.

The Hornbooks of Rita K
Robert Kroetsch
The Hornbooks of Rita K , Robert Kroetsch's first volume of new poetry in more than a decade, is a brilliant collection of mysterious fragments. Where has Rita gone and who is reconstructing her oeuvre? Written with wit and playfulness, Hornbooks is a welcome new work from one of Canada's best writers. Media Release: U of A Press Book by Robert Kroetsch Short listed for "GG" The League of Canadian Poets puts it well: "The Governor General's Award for Poetry is one of the most prestigious and sought-after poetry awards in the country." This year, Robert Kroetsch is among those vying for the honour with his new volume, The Hornbooks of Rita K , published by the University of Alberta Press. Reached in Toronto, Kroetsch said about the nomination, "I feel like a hockey player after a big game. I want to thank the team. I want to thank the editors and designer and staff at the University of Alberta Press. I think poetry is on the rampage in Canada and you're going to see all kinds of good stuff in the next few years." Kroetsch has had a busy summer and fall, participating in several writers' workshops and festivals, including the Ottawa International Writer's Festival, the Winnipeg International Writer's Festival, the Pan Canadian WordFest, and the Harbourfront International Festival of Authors. Next on the schedule is the Distinguished Writer in Residency at the University of Calgary.
