Postcolonial Literatures by African and Caribbean Writers Jana Evans Braziel, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Course Description The course surveys important works of literature by Anglophone writers in the formerly colonized countries of African and the Caribbean (internal departmental note: for rotation purposes, the course could alternately focus on the postcolonial Anglophone literatures of Asia and the Asian Pacific). We will examine postcolonial Anglophone literary texts in their historical contexts and within the frameworks of British and French colonialism in the late eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. The survey will be structured by the basic questions which preoccupy postcolonial authors and the scholars who study these works of literature: for example, which language will the author write in, the native tongue or the colonizer’s dominant language? What are the political implications of this linguistic choice? How is the postcolonial condition inextricably bound, historically and linguistically, to the colonial state of these writer’s countries? Are certain genres of writing, such as the novel, predicated upon modern, western ideals (teleological development, mimetic or realistic portrayals of human nature and the world; etc.)? What are the interrelations of language, religion and culture in postcolonial texts, particularly as positioned against the ‘west’ and the literary traditions of the west? From the early decolonization novel, Things Fall Apart (by the very influential Ibo writer, Chinua Achebe) to the more contemporary literary works by writers influenced by both postcolonial and poststructuralist (and other ‘western’) frames (writers such as Ben Okri from Nigeria), the course will examine the interrelation of colonialism and postcolonial literatures in African and the Caribbean. Writers included in the course are from many different geographical areas: Nigeria (Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Buchi Emecheta, Ben Okri), Ghana (Ama Ata Aidoo, Ayi Kwei Armah), Zimbabwe (Tsitsi Dangarembga, Dambudzo Marechera, Yvonne Vera), Somalia (Nuruddin Farah), Uganda (Moses Isegawa), South Africa (J.M.Coetzee, Sindiwe Magona), Guyana (Wilson Harris, Fred D’Aguiar), Trinidad (C.L.R. James, V.S. Naipaul, Dionne Brand, Shani Mootoo), St. Lucia (Derek Walcott), St. Kitts (Caryl Phillips), Barbados (Kamau Brathwaite, George Lamming) and Jamaica (Erma Brodber).
