Search the M.A.P. Index Margaret Laurence Jean Margaret (Peggy) Wemyss was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on July 18, 1926 to Robert Harrison Wemyss, a lawyer, and his wife Verna Jean, née Simpson. Verna died when Peggy was four years old, and Robert later married her sister, Margaret Campbell Simpson, a teacher and later a librarian, who was throughout the years one of Peggy's "greatest encouragers." After Robert Wemyss's death, when Peggy was nine and her brother still a baby, the family went to live with Grandfather Simpson in his big brick house on First Avenue. In a lettter written in 1983, Margaret stated, "I was an extremely fortunate child. As someone who has always been interested in reading and in writing (which I began to do in about Grade 2 or 3), I always had someone there who encouraged me." That encouragement was provided by her stepmother, Margaret and later by Mildred Musgrove her high school English teacher. Peggy wrote for and was an editor of the Black and Gold , the Neepawa Collegiate paper. When she was in Grades eleven and twelve, she had several articles published in the

Jane Urquhart Margaret Laurence Margaret Laurence's life began on July 18, 1926 in the prairie town of Neepawa, Manitoba. Born Jean Margaret Wemyss, Laurence suffered the loss of her parents at a very young age. Her mother, Verna Simpson Wemyss, died in 1930 when Margaret was only four years old; her father Robert Wemyss, who later married Verna's sister, passed away only five years after the death of his first wife. Raised from then on by her aunt/stepmother, a teacher and librarian, and her maternal grandfather, Laurence's love of literature and of writing flourished with her aunt's encouragement and guidance. Having begun to write in the second grade, Laurence decided early in life to become a writer. She began writing professionally in 1943 when she got a summer job as a reporter for the town newspaper and in 1944 she enrolled in the Honours English program at Winnipeg's United College (known today as the University of Winnipeg). There, she began to publish her stories and poems in Vox , the United College newspaper of which she later became assistant editor. In his new book, The Life of Margaret Laurence, King uses everything from unpublished letters to conversations with friends in order to unmask the real issues that surrounded her life and death, and led her to the forefront of the Canadian literary scene. Laurence, one of Canada's finest female authors, is best known for her novels The Stone Angel, A Jest of God, The Fire-Dwellers, and The Diviners. Throughout her life, Laurence had been lionized by the public and revered by many as a predominant shaper of post-war Canadian literature, setting the pace for other Canadian women like Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro. Posthumously she has been widely honoured with gatherings as well as being featured on a Canadian postage stamp. Margaret Laurence The Diviners , a novel which won her a second Governor General's Award; her first award was for A Jest of God , in 1967. Her early work revolved around her African experience. Her first publication, A Tree for Poverty , 1954, was a collection of her translations of Somali legends and poetry . This was followed in 1960 by This Side Jordan , her first novel, set in Ghana and in 1963 by The Tommorow Tamer , a collection of stories set in the same country. Also in 1963 appeared The Prophet's Camel Bell , a memoir of her years in Somaliland. In 1968 she published Long Drums and Cannons Nigerian Dramatists and Novelists The Stone Angel , her first work of fiction set in Canada was published in 1964. It was the first book of the Manawaka series which includes A Jest of God The Fire-Dwellers A Bird in the House (1970), and The Diviners (1974). Margaret Laurence Last updated 98/01/09 Born in Neepawa, Manitoba on July 18, 1926, to Robert Wemyss and Verna Simpson Wemyss, Margaret lost her mother at the age of four. Margaret Simpson, an unmarried sister of Verna Wemyss, came to care for the family, and one year later married Margaret's father. They had one son Robert, who was born in 1933. Two years later Margaret's father died of pneumonia. In 1944 Margaret Wemyss took a scholarship at Winnipeg's United College, an arts and theology college of the United Church, affiliated with the University of Manitoba. During her time as an honours English student, she had several items published in the student newspaper. She became involved with the "old left," a group of supporters of social reform. After graduating in 1947, Margaret worked as a reporter for the Winnipeg Citizen where she wrote book reviews, a daily radio column, and reported on labour events. That same year she married Jack Laurence, a civil-engineering graduate of the University of Manitoba. In 1949, they moved to England and one year later they left England for Africa where they remained for seven years. Their daughter Jocelyn was born in 1952 during a leave in England; their son David was born in the Gold Coast in 1955. The Laurences left the Gold Coast shortly before it received its independence as the State of Ghana in 1957 and returned to Canada where they lived in Vancouver for five years.
