Another attractively designed and written monograph in the ECW Press series, this guide takes on one of the most celebrated works in recent Canadian fiction. Students of all ages have clasped The Diviners (and a predecessor, The Stone Angel ) to them as if scriptur e. Morag Gunn's search for her identity speaks particularly to the young, the female and the Canadian, but it has evidently been recognized as their own story by many other readers. Symbolically, the water for which the diviners search is the river of history, always dangerously in movement, yet once entered always there as an expression of identity through past and present, a river that flows both ways. The loose, wide quality of the novel has brought it some denigration but this is an effect of a method which exploits memory. Students will find this slim book a firm support in articulating ideas.

72. The Stone Angel By Margaret Laurence
The Stone Angel by margaret laurence (1964). Biography of margaret laurence.margaret laurence (19261987) is one of Canada's finest authors.
http://www.lili.org/isl/ltai/ThemesBooks/laurence.htm
The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence (1964) The story centers around ninety year-old Hagar Shipley, an aging woman living with her son and his wife. Hagar is forgetful, spiteful, remorseful by turns, but always evincing an indomitable spirit. Born and raised on the prairies of Manitoba, Hagar is of the pioneer generation. Her father was one of the early settlers of the town, the fictional Manawaka, and she has inherited his stubborn Scottish resolve and temper which have dogged her all her life. Laurence skillfully reveals Hagar s past through a series of flashbacks, and the reader is taken on a tour of this woman " live and let live, " but instead meddled and coerced, resulting in a lifelong series of disappointments and grief. Hagar has always prided herself on being independent and self-sufficient, and in these last days of her life, she realizes what a price she has paid over the years. The present action of the novel concerns Hagar as she becomes increasingly unable to care for herself and therefore becomes an intolerable strain on her son and his wife. Hagar is full of recriminations and anger, but she is childlike and illogical. She needs assistance with most everything, yet she angrily refuses help; she is incontinent, yet she denies it; she knows she is a burden, yet she denies it even to herself. She is alternately lucid and clouded in her mind, moving back and forth between the present and the past, between her stubborn resolve and the fear and disorientation brought on by her age.

74. Margaret Laurence's "A Bird In The House"
A Bird in the House by margaret laurence (192687) Commentary by KarenBernardo. Vanessa MacLeod, the protagonist of margaret laurence
http://www.storybites.com/Laurencebird.htm
"A Bird in the House" by Margaret Laurence (1926-87)
Commentary by Karen Bernardo Vanessa MacLeod, the protagonist of Margaret Laurence’s story "A Bird in the House," is twelve that profoundly disturbing bridge year between childhood and adolescence. The story opens on Remembrance Day (the Canadian version of Memorial Day), when Vanessa has refused to accompany her family to the Remembrance Day parade and the quasi-religious service that follows. She recognizes that this day has a profound significance for her grandmother, particularly, because it recalls Vanessa’s Uncle Roderick who died in the war. But Vanessa herself has nothing to remember, and the sight of men her father’s age dressed up in the military uniforms of their youth seems hopelessly ridiculous. It is not until she realizes with a shock that her father actually witnessed his younger brother’s death that anything of the significance of Remembrance Day comes to her. She still has nothing to remember, but suddenly she has something to imagine: "He had to watch his own brother die, not in the antiseptic calm of some hospital, but out in the open, the stretches of mud I had seen in his snapshots. he would not have known what to do. He would just have had to stand there and look at it, whatever that might mean." Thus, in a brief epiphany, Vanessa receives her first intimation of death. When she accompanies her father to church, she looks at him: "He was frowning deeply, and I could see the pulse in his temple. I wondered what he believed. I did not have any real idea what it might be. When he raised his head, he did not look uplifted or anything like that. He merely looked tired." On the way home, she asks him if he believes in "Heaven and Hell, and like that." He does not have a ready answer: "Well, I don’t know. I don’t think they are actual places. Maybe they stand for something that happens all the time here, or else doesn’t happen. It’s kind of hard to explain. I guess I’m not so good at explanations."

Manitoba's Margaret Laurence Award Moves North
as Finale for World Literacy Week
Winnipeg, Manitoba-Manitobans are invited to reflect on the importance of literacy in their daily lives, to mark International Literacy Day on Tuesday, September 8th. A variety of events will take place to celebrate the contributions of the unsung heroes and heroines who are involved in over 40 community-based literacy programs in our province. Over 1600 "second chance learners" benefit from the volunteer efforts of tutors, board members, donors and supporters in settings such as storefront learning centres, church basements, friendship centres, union halls, libraries and school classrooms. Volunteers contribute greatly to the continued viability of local programs, without thought of material gain or personal recognition. Public attention on World Literacy Day can help us change an imbalance in society's allocation of resources for low-literacy adults and families. Margaret Laurence Award Moves North The provincial coalition will mount the Margaret Laurence Award of Excellence in Volunteer Literacy Tutoring at the end of Literacy week, by partnering with programs in the Northern region for the first time. First held in Neepawa on the steps of Margaret Laurence's home in 1996, the award festivities have travelled to Selkirk and now to Thompson, as a way of promoting literacy and voluntarism in each region. The award was created with permission of Jocelyn Laurence to recognize volunteers who commit countless hours of unpaid work with adults who have less than a high school education.
