DONOR INFORMATION
The Josephine R. Lawrence Papers were loaned to the University of Missouri for copying by Lawrence on 16 May 1988 (Accession No. 4835).
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Pennytown was a community of black farmers and laborers near Marshall, Missouri. Land purchased in 1871 by Joseph Penny became the nucleus of Pennytown, which grew to become the largest black community in Saline County. Residents of Pennytown performed agricultural, domestic, and other kinds of labor for the region. The residents formed a strong community based on mutual cooperation. Pennytown began to lose population in the 1920s as residents moved to other towns in Saline and Pettis Counties which were closer to their jobs. By the 1970s the only building still standing in Pennytown was the Free Will Baptist Church, which had always been one of the most important community institutions. Annual reunions are held in August so that former residents can retain their ties with Pennytown and preserve the history of their community. Josephine R. Lawrence, who was born in 1929 in Pennytown is a local historian with a keen interest in preserving and recording the history of Pennytown. Josephine R. Lawrence's mother was Nellie Jackson and her father was Fred Robinson. Her grandmother was Beulah Jackson. Aaron Jackson was her mother's first husband; Aron Jackson was her cousin. She had two brothers, Aaron and James Jackson, and a sister, Lorene Jackson Crobarker. Josephine's former husband was Clarence L. Lawrence.

Children's Books Stratemeyer Syndicate
In 1917, during her early years at the Call , she interviewed Edward Stratemeyer, author of numerous boys' books and head of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The resulting article, "The Newarker Whose Name Is Best Known," was published in the December 9, 1917, Call . Lawrence impressed Stratemeyer enough for him to tell her that, should she want to write juveniles, he'd be interested in seeing her work. She first submitted a story she'd written, for which he felt there was no market, then, in 1919, ghostwrote her first book for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, following an outline prepared by Stratemeyer. It was Sunny Boy in the Country , the initial volume in the Sunny Boy series. Advertised as the adventures of "a little fellow with big eyes and an inquiring disposition who finds the world a large and wonderful thing indeed," the series enjoyed moderate success, reaching fourteen volumes before its end in 1931. Using the Syndicate pseudonym Ramy Allen White, Lawrence wrote all but the last volume, ending her connection with the series only after Stratemeyer's death in 1930.
She soon expanded her work for the Syndicate, ghostwriting another series about young children, the seven-volume

Josephine Lawrence
Childhood and Adolescence
Lawrence was born March 12, 1889, in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Dr. Elijah W. Lawrence and Mary Barker Lawrence. One interviewer described her as the child of "[a] dignified medico-father [and] a retiring mother," noting that her parents' influence and her "Quaker ancestry combined to give the young Josephine independence of spirit." In an autobiographical sketch, Lawrence noted that "As a child, I spent considerable time with a Quaker aunt who spoke the plain language and saw to it that I attended First Day Sabbath regularly. Perhaps this taught me to love silence."
During her childhood, the family lived at 45 Halsey Street, Newark. Later in life, Lawrence recalled that "It was a residential street until Hahne's built there. I can remember the workmen tearing down the quiet respectable boarding house just opposite our house....The popular recreation was sitting on the stoops in the late afternoon and evening when the weather was mild. There was a branch (or perhaps it was the main) of the Public Library on West Park Street and my brother and I used to get books there to read on the stoop. We also had a back yard and my father planted two or three peach trees which bore delicious fruit. And the weekly wash was always dried in the sun in the back yard."
She attended Barringer High School, where "her penchant for writing and her inclination towards shyness, already marked the person she would be throughout her life." One of her articles for the school publication, the

Born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 12, 1889, Josephine Lawrence began working at the Newark Sunday Call in 1915, and eventually she became the newspaper's children's page editor; later she was the women's page editor and a weekly columnist for the Newark Sunday News
An interview with Edward Stratemeyer led to her association with the Stratemeyer Syndicate, for which she wrote extensively through the 1920s. Among the Stratemeyer series to which she contributed were Betty Gordon (as Alice B. Emerson), Honey Bunch (as Helen Louise Thorndyke), and Four Little Blossoms (as Mabel C. Hawley).

JOSEPHINE SAYS, 'A PENCIL SKETCH HAS AN IMMEDIACY AND SPONTANEITY THAT CAPTURES THE SCENE OR EXPRESSION IN A WAY THAT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF THAT OCCASION. PAINT IS COLOUR, AND CAN BE USED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. I USE WATERCOLOURS FOR LANDSCAPE SKETCHING, AND OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINT FOR STUDIO WORK ON CANVAS'. JOSEPHINE FINE TUNED HER SKILLS THROUGH VARIOUS WORKSHOPS WITH EMINENT ARTISTS, SUZANNE ARCHER, ANDREW SIBLEY, JOHN WOLSELEY, INCLUDING A THREE WEEK SEMINAR WITH CLIFTON PUGH IN 1987. SHE HAS ATTENDED THE AUSTALIAN FLYING ARTS SCHOOL, AND McGREGOR SUMMER SCHOOLS. SHE HAS BEEN IN COUNTLESS EXHIBITIONS, AND WON MANY PRIZES ARTIST STATEMENT Earth colours, rocks, dust, heat, long slow movements and vast distances mean outback Australia to me. Oxides on clay portray these features well. Cattle personify the dichotomy of progress through hard work versus environmental degradation of the fragile land. To create a sustainable balance will always be difficult. Pottery is a medium that has this hardness yet remains fragile.
