He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." [Back To Fiction Writers] Stephen Leacock Born in England, Leacock came to Canada at a young age and grew up in the Lake Simcoe area of Ontario. In 1906, Leacock wrote his first book, Elements of Political Science ; it was to become a standard collage textbook. In 1908, Leacock went to Montreal's McGill, heading up its Department of Political Economy and carried on in that capacity until his retirement in 1936. A humorous, of the Haliburton Dickens and Twain vein Leacock wrote his first humorous work, Literary Lapses in 1910; he subsequently wrote a humorous book, once a year, for the rest of his life. Leacock, Stephen Canadian writer and economist, born in Swanmore, England. As a child, he emigrated to Canada with his family; later he was educated at the universities of Toronto and Chicago. From 1903 to 1936 he taught at McGill University. Leacock wrote several books on political science and economics, as well as the biographies Mark Twain (1932) and Charles Dickens (1933). He is best known for his essays, parodies, and short stories, in which he strikes a rich vein of burlesque and satiric nonsense. Among such works are Literary Lapses (1910), Nonsense Novels (1911), Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914), and Moonbeams from the Larger Lunacy (1915). His uncompleted autobiography, The Boy I Left Behind Me (1946), was published posthumously.

Stephen Leacock Building Virtual McGill Stephen Leacock Building McGill Archives The Stephen Leacock Building was named after Stephen Leacock, a Professor of Economics from 1901 to 1944 and a well-known Canadian humorist and author. The edifice was built in 1965 by ARCOP, a firm contributed to by Affleck, Desbarats, Dimokopoulos, Lebensold, and Sise who were also responsible for the University Centre . At this time there were many building projects in progress all over the campus because of the dramatic climb in the enrolment of the University. Many of the faculties and departments had expanded beyond their spaces and needed room to grow, including the Faculty of Arts which had outgrown its ancestral home, the Arts Building. The area chosen for the new building had been, until then, the site of the McGill Observatory and of half of the Presbyterian College , whose remaining half is currently called Morrice Hall. The Leacock Building was originally planned as two towers, the second, which was found to be unnecessary and was never built, would have taken over the site of the remaining half of Morrice Hall, a charming Collegiate Gothic style structure. Leacock is a ten-storey concrete structure that houses, on its lower three floors, twenty-four lecture rooms ranging in capacity from 30 seats to 200, not including the massive lecture room on the first floor which seats 650 students at a time. This large auditorium has no windows in it, to provide fewer distractions, and is half underground with the seats sloping in the same direction as the natural hillside. Since all of the lecture rooms are on the lower floors, they are easily accessible to students and keep the traffic to a minimum in the upper tower which is reserved for 125 offices served by elevators. The lower floors may be entered from the third floor terrace to the west, the second floor terrace to the south, the first floor street level, or from the Arts Building which is connected to Leacock from the east by a glass-walled corridor. Stairs, similar to those on the interior, connect the levels of the terrace.

Les 10 étages du pavillon Leacock comprennent, aux trois premiers, 24 salles de conférences pouvant contenir de 30 à 200 personnes, en plus de l'amphithéâtre du premier étage qui renferme 650 places. Cette immense salle est dénuée de fenêtres, ce qui diminue les causes d'inattention, et s'avère en fait un semi-sous-sol avec des sièges inclinés à flanc de coteau. Homepage Contents Brief Chronology Stephen Butler Leacock is born on December 30 in Swanmore, Hampshire, England. The Leacock family emigrates to Canada and settles on a farm near the south shore area of Lake Simcoe, Ontario. Enters Upper Canada College, Toronto. Peter Leacock (Stephen's father) leaves his family. Stephen Leacock graduates as Head Boy from Upper Canada College. Enters the University of Toronto and completes two years in one. Studies modern and classical languages as well as literature. For financial reasons, leaves at the end of the first year. Takes a three-month training course at the Stathroy Collegiate Institute in western Ontario, to qualify for teaching high school. Finds a teaching position as a modern language teacher at Uxbridge High School, Uxbridge, Ontario, eighteen miles from the Leacock family farm. Offered a position as language master at Upper Canada College. Teaches there from February 1889 to July 1899. Returns to the University of Toronto, on a part-time basis. Receives his honours B.A. from the University of Toronto.
