He also owned a considerable amount of property in the West Indies, inherited from his father; his experience there led him to campaign for the humane treatment of slaves in his posthumously published Journal of a West India Proprietor Lewis met a great many famous and influential people: Walter Scott said he was fonder of great people than he ought to have been, either as a man of talent or a man of fortune. He had always dukes and duchesses in his mouth, and was particularly fond of anyone who had a title. But his associations included not only the nobility, but a great many writers, including Scott himself. While living in Weimar in , he met " M. de Goethe

It is as if he gradually became aware of disastrous human potential in excess of that which can be accounted for by environmental misfortunes. What if the self is insatiable? - Howard Anderson The Audience now assembled in the Capuchin Church was collected by various causes, but all of them were foreign to the ostensible motive. The Women came to show themselves, the Men to see the Women: Some were attracted by curiosity to hear an Orator so celebrated; Some came because they had no better means of employing their time till the play began; Some, from being assured that it would be impossible to find places in the Church; and one half of Madrid was brought thither by expecting to meet the other half.

MATTHEW LEWIS See also: Biography: Matthew Lewis was born in London in 1775. The novel concerns a saintly Capuchin monk who is led into a life of depravity by a fiend-inspired woman. Charges of immorality and irreligion brought against Lewis by his critics caused a less offensive second edition to be published. Of his melodramatic plays the most famous is The Castle Spectre (1797). He died in 1818.

In what ways are these negative - or misogynist - views of women? 2. Examine the representation of Rosario and the change that takes place after she has revealed herself as Mathilda. In as much detail as possible, analyse Monk's depiction of the feminine. 3. List all the crimes that Matilda seduces Ambrosio to carry out. LEWIS, MATTHEW GREGORY
Even Satan’s self with thee might dread to dwell, And in thy skull discern a deeper hell.” The Life and Correspondence of M. G. Lewis, in two volumes, was published in 1839. LEWIS, MERIWETHER (1774—1809), American explorer, was born near Charlottesville, Virginia, on the 18th of August 1774. In 1794 he volunteered with the Virginia troops called out to suppress the “ Whisky Insurrection,” was commissioned as ensign in the regular United States army in 1795, served with distinction under General Anthony Wayne in the campaigns against the Indians, and attained the rank of captain in 1797. From 1801 to 1803 he was the private secretary of President Jefferson. On the 18th of January 1803 Jefferson sent aeonfidential message to Congress urging the development of trade with the Indians of ‘the Missouri Valley and recommending that an exploring party be sent into this region, notwithstanding

From this . . . it may be possible to judge the extent to which Gothic machinery had grown by 1797. Lewis' boldness in his treatment of the supernatural, for instance, is far beyond that of James Boaden three years earlier [in Fontainville Forest ]. Boaden, it will be remembered, took the greatest pains to prepare his phantom, and then permitted only a fleeting glimpse of it gliding across a darkened corner of the stage; Lewis brought his specter twice upon the stage, in illuminated scenes, and involved it in such action that it could not have avoided being conspicuous. Similar excesses are apparent in the "Monk's" treatment of other properties. With The Castle Spectre Gothic drama assumed a popular position not below that of the Gothic novel. Besides having a very long and eminently successful first run, this concoction went through seven printed editions in 1798 and eleven by 1803. Still popular in 1829, it was turned into a prose romance by Sarah Wilkinsonperhaps the only Gothic play involved in a reversal of the usual novel-dramatic adaptation relationship. Its fame came to equal and perhaps to surpass that of The Monk ; in the fourth edition of that novel (1798) was the advertisement "by M.G. Lewis, Esq. M.P. Author of The Castle Spectre." Though the novel had been written first, the publisher used the play to recommend it.

Lewis, Matthew
9 July 1775 - 10 May 1818
Like Mary Shelley , Lewis made a huge impact with his teenage (and only) novel The Monk , which more-or-less defined the far edge of sensational Gothicism when it was published in 1796. Lewis went on to write a number of plays, poems, and translations, many of which featured Gothic themes and motifs. As a playwright Lewis was rather successful, his melodramatic flair finding an appreciate audience in the days of Romantic drama, although Lewis abandoned the theater when he inherited his family's West Indian sugar plantations.
Sites: The Monk : A Hypertext Companion [ problematic link ] Solid overview of Lewis and his place in the Gothic tradition, of the complex textual history of this novel (Lewis himself bowdlerized the text in response to public outcry), and other issue. [Zachary Munzenrider, ENEC 981: The Novel of Sensibility. UVa] biographical note Emphasizes The Monk (naturally) and notes Lewis' influence on a number of other writers. Guest Editor's Introduction
to the Matthew Lewis issue of Romanticism on the Net
by Frederick S. Frank The year 1996 marked the two hundredth anniversary of the first publication of Matthew Gregory "Monk" Lewis's Gothic supershocker, The Monk , certainly not a major literary landmark but an important date, nonetheless, for students of the Gothic novel. Although the bicentenary of the novel's publication did not attract much notice within the scholarly community, the novel's birth was celebrated by a series of papers delivered in two panels devoted to The Monk at the annual meeting of the Midwestern American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies (MWASECS) convening in Indianapolis in October 1996. Additionally, The Monk 's permanent and important place in the Gothic pantheon received further recognition in many of the papers delivered at the biannual conference of the International Gothic Association (IGA) which met in July 1997 at Walpole's restored Gothic villa, Strawberry Hill, United Kingdom. The essayists for this special number of Romanticism on the Net approach Lewis's Gothic text from a variety of perspectives, opening or reopening some probing questions concerning the novel's historical endurance, popular success, and centrality as a major and seminal paradigm of high Gothicism. Such themes as
