ET TU, BABE

It is the tale of Mark Leyner, an incredibly famous and
vain bestselling author. The book chronicles his plateau at the top of insane popularity, and then his fall from glory, but there isn't
much of a narrative structure; rather, just a series of often hilarious riffs on the theme of celebrity, Leyner himself, and just about
everything Leyner can get his hands on. The fictional Leyner is lusted after by supermodels; has a series of robotically enhanced
senior citizens as body guards; and in one of the book's strangest scenes, steals a vial of Abraham Lincoln's morning breath, which
apparently is a highly powerful drug. Leyner's wit is scattershot and tirelessly inventive, and since the book has more than just a
pretense of linear structure, it works better than My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist. In a recent essay on
postmodern/metafictional literature, David Foster Wallace points to Leyner as one of the most visible purveyors of the style.
Certainly, Leyner is the most accessible, and Et Tu, Babe is a fine introduction to his work.

Mark Leyner looks for doll accessories

by Jesse Garon
Mark Leyner's world is crammed full of brand names, celebrities, TV channels, and other triviata. In his first two books, I Smell Esther Williams and My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist , he nailed down the basic concepts of Leyner-speak. Then came Et Tu, Babe , a trip through the world of Mark Leyner, Celebrity Author. This is a man who hangs with Martha Stewart, who has the commando squad Team Leyner at his beck and call, and who speaks with the assured arrogance of the advertising world and "Entertainment Tonight". Now, he's back for more. Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog collects a number of articles that Leyner wrote after the success of Et Tu, Babe garnered him freelance assignments from publications as diverse as The New Republic and Elle . He takes on subjects such as bodybuilding, the Miss America Pageant, product placement in literature, childcare, Congressional tattoos, and sperm banks ("As a writer, the notion of being paid to masturbate does not seem odd to me in the least."). The Leyner style can be described in two words: SEMIOTIC OVERLOAD ; throw as much stuff at the reader as you think he can take... and then throw some more. The juxtapositions are humorously surreal, shedding light on a media-saturated world not too far removed from our own.

His daughter is still missing, lost in the mall as a disembodied ghostly presence. His son is a space cadet. One of his neighbor battles a carnivorous lawn. Another neighbor has become an invincible superhero. Cliff wants to marry Marsha, but Marsha's Jewish mother objects, and ever though she's dead, her ghost can still wreak havoc on an ordinary household. Has anyone ever read anything by Mark Leyner? His most recent books are "My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist" and "The Tetherballs of Bougainville" and both of these books are very similar to Pynchon's style. I'd highly recommend them for anyone who likes Pynchon. I also wondered what people thought the significance of hallucinations and intoxicants. I think they're very central to the existance or nonexistance of a conspiracy.

I was very interested in your questions regarding intoxication and hallucinations, and how they related to "conspiracies." I can only think of the McCarthy era and the mass hysteria which prevailed at that time. It seems that if there is enough paranoia generated, then a false or altered perspective of reality will prevail. On the smaller scale, this might manifest itself as hallucinations and intoxication. Being a mental state, I suspect that an halluciantion is the ultimate expression of paranoia. I suspect, too, that intoxication is just one way of escaping or denying that mental state, an expression of the acceptance of modern society's vista of diminishing returns - perhaps. Both conditions evade what we know as reality. These are just guesses. I would think that it is not unlikely that Pynchon is using them in an entirely different context. Perhaps they symptoms of a bankrupt society, or chaos, or entropy - who knows?
