Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936)
Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's greatest modern poet and playwright, was born June 5, 1898 at Fuentevaqueros in the Spanish province of Granada. He began writing poems in his late teens, reciting many of them in the local cafes. In 1919 he left to study law at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid. There he met and became friends with film director Luis Bunuel and painter Salvador Dali, among other Spanish notables of his generation. Lorca came to national prominence in 1927 when his play Mariana Pineda was first staged. His initial book of poems Gypsy Ballads was published the following year. During a trip abroad, which also took him to England and Cuba, Lorca spent nine months in New York City beginning in June of 1929. His poems of that period were later collected in the volume entitled Poet In New York. In 1931 Spain became a Republic which gave hope to many, Lorca included, that Spain's standard of living would be improved, its lliteracy reduced and its culture more widely disseminated. Lorca became director of a student theater company which toured small villages and in the face of harassment by Fascist partisans presented the Spanish classics to the peasants. His first great play, the rural tragedy

Much of García Lorca's work was infused with popular themes such as Flamenco and Gypsy culture. In 1922, García Lorca organized the first "Cante Jondo" festival in which Spain's most famous "deep song" singers and guitarists participated. The deep song form permeated his poems of the early 1920s. During this period, García Lorca became part of a group of artists known as Romancero Gitano ("The Gypsy Ballads"), brought García Lorca far-reaching fame; it was reprinted seven times during his lifetime. In 1929, García Lorca came to New York. The poet's favorite neighborhood was Harlem; he loved African-American spirituals, which reminded him of Spain's "deep songs." In 1930, García Lorca returned to Spain after the proclamation of the Spanish republic and participated in the Second Ordinary Congress of the Federal Union of Hispanic Students in November of 1931. The congress decided to build a "Barraca" in central Madrid in which to produce important plays for the public. "La Barraca," the traveling theater company that resulted, toured many Spanish towns, villages, and cities performing Spanish classics on public squares. Some of García Lorca's own plays, including his three great tragedies

FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA Federico Garcia Lorca was born on the 5th of June, 1898 at Fuentevaqueros,
near Granada in Spain. The work of Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's greatest modern poet, has long been
admire for its emotional intensity and metaphorical brilliance. Few poets take us
more directly and memorably to what Lorca described as "the dark root of the
scream," the terrain of the "duende", where inspiration delivers a new poetic
reality and "intelligence" discovers it limitations. The Generation of 1927 In Barcelona, art-lovers can visit Avino Street, the symbolic cradle of Cubism embodied in Las Senoritas de Avignon. There is also the splendid Picasso Museum in the centre of the Gothic quarter, which houses a number of works of his youth, as well as many engravings and the series of paintings inspired by Las Meninas of Velazquez. Madrid was the birthplace of the Cubist, Juan Gris, who succeeded in reducing the objects he painted to their chromatic mass and elemental geometric properties. And Catalunya can claim parentage of Juan Miro, the master of surrealism, who was profoundly poetic and original, with his infantile style betraying wise vision. A large part of his work is exhibited in the Miro Foundation in Barcelona, which is houses in a superb building designed by the architec Josep Luis Sert. Also associated with surrealism is Salvador Dali, an exceptional artist, who liked to provoke bourgeois sensibility with shocking and calculate gestures. Dali had lived with Luis Bunuel and Federico Garcia Lorca in the 1920s at the Student Residence (Residencia de Estudiantes) in Madrid. This institution enormously important for its intellectual ambiance and great artistic fertility of its lodgers, persists today as a thriving cultural centre and the site of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas. It was there that the group of poets known as the Generation of '27 was born.

A legõsibb spanyol kultúrájú tájról, Andalúziából származott.

Federico García Lorca was born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada on the 5th of June, 1898 and died the 19th of August, 1936. His life spanned the years between the Year of Disaster and the Spanish Civil War which ultimately victimized him. He travelled throughout Spain and America, principally Argentina, living and writing some of the most beautiful poetry ever written. His poetry has been translated into a dozen languages and his name is known worldwide. His personal life is the subject of much debate now, relating to his tendencies and friends. This page is dedicated to his poetry, written by him for us to enjoy instead of dissecting his personality. Lorca's poetry and plays combine elements of Andalusion folklore with sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic techniques, cut across all social and educational barriers. Works include: Thus Five Years Pass The Public Dona Rosita . He is toted to have succeeded in the creation of a viable poetic idiom for the stage, superior to the works of his contemporaries, Yeats, Eliot and Claudel. August 9, 1936, Falangist soldiers dragged the Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca into a field, shot him and tossed his body into an unmarked grave... Franco's government tried to obliterate Lorca's memory. His books were prohibited, his name forbidden.

Lorca's first theatrical production, The Butterfly's Evil Spell (1920), opened at the Eslava Theater in Madrid. Although the show closed after only one night, it gave Lorca his first taste of theatrical fame. He published his first book of poems in 1921, and seven years later, his book of poetry Romancero Gitano or The Gypsy Ballads made him famous throughout Spain. The public soon labeled Lorca as the "Gypsy poet", which displeased Lorca, and perhaps partly to dispel this myth, he moved to New York in 1929 to study English at Columbia University where he came into contact with amateur theatre groups and professional repertory companies. The trip also inspired a book of poetry, Poet in New York , which was published posthumously. Lorca returned to Spain in 1931 and formed his own theatre company. Composed mostly of students, "La Barraca" toured the countryside giving free performances of the Spanish classics, including the works of Lope de Vega , and Miguel de Cervantes. The company also produced the three "rural tragedies" on which Lorca's theatrical reputation rests.
