B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback H(oward) P(hillips) Lovecraft (1890-1937) American poet and author of macabre short novels, who was virtually unknown most of his career as a writer. Lovecraft's posthumous fame, particularly in America and France, rests on his 'Cthulhu Mythos' stories. H.P. Lovecraft has become a cult figure in the genre of horror fiction. He is considered the most original American writer of weird fiction subsequent to Edgar Allan Poe . Lovecraft's imaginary town in his tales, Arkham, was based on his home town of Providence. "For after all, the victim was a writer and painter wholly devoted to the field of myth, dream, terror, and superstition, and avid in his quest for scenes and effects of a bizarre, spectral sort. His earlier stay in the city - a visit to a strange old man as deeply given to occult and forbidden lore as he - had ended amidst death and flame, and it must have been some morbid instinct which drew him back from his home in Milwaukee. He may have known of the old stories despite his statements to the contrary in the diary, and his death may have nipped in the bud some stupendous hoax destined to have a literary reflection."

Afflicted by seizures of unknown cause, Lovecraft received only partial public schooling. Unable to work as a laborer in a time bereft of social services, Howard became a burden to his family and gradually slipped into poverty. Writing was one of the few things available to Lovecraft but success, other than from loyal fans and influenced writers, avoided him.
Short stories were sold mostly to Weird Tales and only one book was published in Lovecraft's lifetime, The Shadow Over Innsmouth . Lovecraft's early death due to cancer left most of his works unpublished. August Derleth's Arkham House was created, in large part, to publish these stories. Lovecraft's grave remained unmarked (many Depression era graves are unmarked) for 40 years until fans erected a stone that contained the haunting epitaph, 'I am Providence.' H. P. Lovecraft
H ailed as the 20th century Poe, H. P. Lovecraft wrote fantasy reminiscent of Dunsany and horror in the best tradition of Poe, Blackwood, and Machen. He singled out the best elements in the work of his literary masters and blended them into a unique style of his own a style that has, in turn, had many imitators and many more admirers. It was in a gray area between horror and science fiction that Lovecraft excelled and made his contribution, an area he called "cosmic horror."

As a boy Lovecraft was somewhat lonely and suffered from frequent illnesses, many of them apparently psychological. His attendance at the Slater Avenue School was sporadic, but Lovecraft was soaking up much information through independent reading. At about the age of eight he discovered science, first chemistry, then astronomy. He began to produce hectographed journals, The Scientific Gazette (1899-1907) and The Rhode Island Journal of Astronomy The Providence Sunday Journal . Shortly thereafter he began writing a monthly astronomy column for The Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner , a rural paper; he later wrote columns for The Providence Tribune (1906-08) and T he Providence Evening News (1914-18), as well as

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/6698/lovecraf.htm
LOVECRAFT
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward .

Introduction
The ancillary question "Why read H. P. Lovecraft?" seems to have been definitively answered, if the millions of hardcover and paperback copies of his work in this country and the translations of his stories into fifteen or more languages around the world are any testimony. Lovecraft has always had a divided readership on the one hand youthful enthusiasts of fantasy, on the other hand a small band of writers and critics (from T. O. Mabbott to Jorge Luis Borges ) who can see beyond the tentacled monsters that adorn the covers of his books to the philosophical and literary substance of the work itself. It is perhaps this first group of readers that makes the critical establishment so dubious: how can a writer so popular be of literary worth? This is a very real inquiry, not an attenuated relic of literary aristocracy: although we are flooded today with volumes of supposed scholarship on Stephen King, there is still little reason to believe that his work merits much attention.
What we must do, then, is to see what there is about Lovecraft that is worth studying, and why, one hundred years after his birth, he commands so large a popular and a scholarly following. Here are some hints: (1) Lovecraft's life, although outwardly uneventful, is of consuming interest thanks to the existence of tens of thousands of his letters, he is one of the most self-documented individuals in human history; (2) his life, work, and thought form a philosophical and aesthetic unity found in few other writers; and (3) the whole of his work fiction, essays, poetry, letters is worth study.

Prefazione
