LYDGATE CHURCH AND VILLAGE by the late Canon C.C.W.Airne A LECTURE DELIVERED TO SADDLEWORTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
TUESDAY 6 TH APRIL 1976 2. The Growth of Lydgate into a village Manchester Chronicle in 1792 announcing an appointment of a Master to be made on the 4 th January 1793, which states that the School had "flourished greatly under the direction of the late master. There is a good school house, rooms for the Master, and a small endowment." The small endowment probably referred to Walkers Charity. John Walker, a Yorkshire manufacturer, made his will on 7 th July 1755, in which he left £600 to four trustees "for the benefit of poor children residing in Ashton-under-Lyne, Oldham and Saddleworth … using the interest for buying books and causing poor children to be taught to read and say the Catechism of the Church of England." By the mid 19 th Century the principal had risen to £951.0.10, yielding an income of £26.0.10. The schools at Lydgate, Delph and Hollinwood received £4 each, Oldham £7 and Ashton £8. Lydgate received the charity until it became a Controlled school in 1957, when presumably it was paid to the local education authority. In 1847 £10 was donated from the Factories Penalty Fund for the purchase of books, maps and other material for teaching in the school.

Lydgate had a consuming passion for literature, and it was probably that he might indulge this taste more fully that in 1434 he retired from the priorate of Hatfield Broadoak (or Hatfield Regis), to.which he had been appointed in June 1423. After 1390—bUt whilst he was still a young man—he made the acquaintance of Geoffrey Chaucer, with whose son Thomas he was on terms of considerable intimacy. This friendship appears to have decided Lydgate’s career, and in his Troy-book and elsewhere are reverent and touching tributes to his “master.” The passages in question do not exaggerate his obligations to the “ well of English.” The themes of all his more ambitious poems can be traced to Chaucerian sources. The Story of Thebes, for instance, was doubtless suggested by the “ romance which Cressida and her companions are represented as reading when interrupted by Pandarus ( Troilus and Cressida, II. xii.-xvi.). The Falls of Princes, again, is merely the Monk’s Tale “ writ large.” And half-changed Latin, with conceits of poetry.

    People and Peoples (John)
JOHN John was a king of England reigning from 1199 to 1216. He was an able administrator interested in law and government but he neither trusted others nor was trusted by them. Heavy taxation, disputes with the Church (John was excommunicated by the Pope in 1209) and unsuccessful attempts to recover his French possessions made him unpopular. Many of his barons rebelled and in June 1215 they forced the King to sign a peace treaty accepting their reforms. This treaty, later known as the Magna Carta, limited royal powers, defined feudal obligations between the King and the barons, and guaranteed a number of rights. The most influential clauses concerned the freedom of the Church; the redress of grievances of owners and tenants of land; the need to consult the Great Council of the Realm so as to prevent unjust taxation; mercantile and trading relationships; regulation of the machinery of justice so that justice be denied to no one; and the requirement to control the behaviour of royal officials. The most important clauses established the basis of habeas corpus (' you have the body'), i.e. that no one shall be imprisoned except by due process of law, and that ' to no one will we sell, to no one will we refuse or delay right or justice'. The Charter also established a council of barons who were to ensure that the
