Doctorow Complete archives for Books An engine of anarchy Ken MacLeod talks about his rebellious youth, his political paradoxes and the visionary power of cyberpunk. By Andrew Leonard July 27, 1999 K en MacLeod is the greatest living Trotskyist libertarian cyberpunk science-fiction humorist. It's a safe claim to make, because he is undoubtedly the only such creature. The 44-year-old Scot and former computer programmer imagines futures full of both socialist unions and libertarian enclaves, warring with each other and within themselves. You don't often find communist mercenaries working for capitalist insurance companies in science fiction. In Ken MacLeod's future, such political incongruities are a joyous fact of life. Add your regular cyberpunk ingredients machine consciousness, post-human trickery, cool gadgets and lots of good drugs and rock 'n' roll and you have a heady, rollicking brew. MacLeod's political fiction is no pose. He's a former Communist Party member who has won two Prometheus awards for best libertarian science fiction novel. After his American editor told me that MacLeod was a regular "trenchant" contributor to Internet-based discussion groups, I decided to do some cyberspace stalking. Where does he hang out? The bulk of his contributions are in the Usenet newsgroup "rec.arts.sf.written." No surprise there r.a.s.w. is one of the oldest watering holes on the Net quite a few authors congregate there with their fans, critics and peers. But his next most favored spot is "alt.politics.socialism.trotsky" and after that, a little down the list, "talk.politics.libertarianism." One of MacLeod's hobbies, it seems, when he's between books, is plunging into the Internet fray to argue about what Marx and Engels really intended, and to engage in the endless hair-splitting dear to libertarians.

Ken MacLeod, science fiction's freshest new writer achieves the highly improbable with wit and style. By Andrew Leonard July 27, 1999 T he action has hardly begun in "The Cassini Division" when the characters start making jokes about Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. "Gold is such a useful metal," says one woman at a cocktail party in the 24th century. "You know, Lenin thought we'd use it for urinals." The smart-ass response from warrior woman Ellen May Ngwethu, protector of the Solar System is fast in coming: "Not his only mistake!" Never mind that for readers at the end of the 20th century Lenin's legacy is little more than a vague footnote. Capitalism has won, the game is over, the socialists have long since been relegated to history's dustbin. But here's this crazy Scot, Ken MacLeod, imagining a far future full of socialist mercenaries obsessing about Leon Trotsky, cracking jokes about "smart-card carrying" Union members, and laying out a smorgasbord of possible libertarian reorganizations of society. It's nuts "The Cassini Division" is set four centuries in the future, and people are

Your browser does not support script advertise search EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Ken MacLeod interviewed Scottish SF author Ken MacLeod may be a best buddy with Iain Banks, but he's now been firmly established as a rising star in the science fiction firmament in his right. He chats with Stephen Hunt about why he's trying to find time to read Perdido Street Station, his new book, Engine City, and why most of the futures are capitalist … but they're terrifying! Are you currently writing full time now, or are you still fitting in the odd day-job? KM. I 've been writing full-time since the beginning of 1997. When and why did you begin writing? When did you first consider yourself a writer? KM. I started writing fiction almost as soon as I discovered SF, in my early teens, and wrote some terrible short stories and made lots of plans and notes for novels, none of which I wrote. But the notes, the ideas, the characters and even some of the titles turned out to be usable later. I didn't actually consider myself a writer until The Star Fraction got accepted.

32. Why Did You Start Writing - Is It Something You’ve Always Wanted To Do
Interview with ken macleod.
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~houghtong/macleod.htm
Ken MacLeod In 1998 The Edge arranged interviews with Iain Banks and Ken MacLeod, on the publication of Banks’ Inversions and MacLeod’s The Cassini Division . Andrew Hedgecock drew the appropriate straw. This is the MacLeod interview. The Iain Banks interview can be found in The Edge Ken MacLeod is the author of three elegantly plotted and relentlessly inventive SF novels: The Star Fraction The Stone Canal (1996) and The Cassini Division (1998). His fiction combines rigorous analysis of technological and political possibility with philosophical speculation, vivid characterisation, and compelling storylines. Raised on Lewis, one of the Western Isles, and in Greenock, Inverclyde, he studied Zoology at Glasgow University, researched in Biomechanics at Brunel University and worked as a computer analyst/programmer at Edinburgh University before becoming a full-time writer. You’re a comparatively late starter, is writing something you’ve always wanted to do? I’ve always been attempting short stories writing down ideas for novels and so on. Some of the scenes in The Stone Canal go way back to stuff I wrote in my teens and early twenties. At that time I didn’t have the persistence or self belief to go on and develop it

D ark Light' by Ken Macleod tells the story of the starship Bright Star's arrival on the Second Sphere - a planet founded by Gods and populated by kidnapped alien races. Skilfully mixing blockbuster adventure and thoughtful commentary, Ken Mcleod charts the impact that the first human light speed space craft has on the main city of the planet, Rawlinston.
The opening paragraph is one to savour and the rest of the book delivers. The characters are well-rounded and believable. The Second Sphere is obviously a place where the men are men and women are feisty! There is also a subtle thread of humour throughout the book - which while not making me laugh on the bus did afford me a few wry smiles! There are enough plot twists and conundrums to keep me reading till two o'clock in the morning but not too much so that your brain gets dizzy. It is also a novel that lingers in your mind, that gives you something to ponder will making yourself a strong cup of coffee because you were up all night reading!

Check out website: www.orbitbooks.co.uk E ngine City' is the third book in Ken McLeod's series 'Engines of Light'. It details the story of three Earth cosmonauts who build the first human light-speed ship and travel to distant worlds and try to stop the gods (who are the consciousness of stars) from destroying civilisations like we would destroy a fly buzzing about our head. I have tried to write that last sentence about ten times and I still haven't told half of the plot intricacies. It is a huge plot contained within some tightly written, idea-packed prose. And it works.
I think that I enjoyed this book so much because it is like real life (insomuch as a Science Fiction novel populated by alien spider-monkeys and ancient ancestors annoying their descendants can be). The story it tells is both large scale and sweeping and also small and detailed. You can read this book if you are interested in society and politics and the effects that individuals have on these institutions. Or you can read this book if you like the interplay between well-written and believable characters.
