Derek Mahon
The Blackbird One morning in the month of June I was coming out of this door And found myself in a garden, A sanctuary of light and air Transplanted from the Hesperides, No sound of machinery anywhere, When from a bramble bush a hidden Blackbird suddenly gave tongue, Its diffident, resilient song Breaking the silence of the seas. Everything Is Going To Be All Right How should I not be glad to contemplate the clouds clearing beyond the dormer window and a high tide reflected on the ceiling? There will be dying, there will be dying, but there is no need to go into that. The poems flow from the hand unbidden and the hidden source is the watchful heart. The sun rises in spite of everything and the far cities are beautiful and bright. I lie here in a riot of sunlight watching the day break and the clouds flying. Everything is going to be all right. `Present-day Irish poets are believers - heretical believers, maybe - but they have the spiritual buoynancy of a belief in something. The sort of belief I see in Ireland is a belief emanating from life, from nature, from revealed religion, and from the nation. A sort of dream that produces a sense of magic; indeed there are few signs of the awful sense of respect for words which poetry demands.'
`Irish poetry remains a creation happily, fundamentally rooted in rural civilization, yet aware and in touch with the elementals of the future.'

Painting into Poetry: The Case of D er ek Mahon Rajeev S. This essay describes the relation between poetry and painting in t er ms of an artist’s need for imaginative space as the productive outcome of a tension between temp er ament and circumstance, treating D er ek Mahon’s poems on paintings as a specific instance of a gen er al type of lit er ary allusion in which “ firstness ” is made to give ov er to “ secondariness I will argue that belatedness–as of the forg er selling fake V er me er s to Go er ing in Mahon ’s poem of that name–brings forth “a light to transform the world” through the melancholic knowledge it elicits from the blind sightedness of “the first”. MM: Finally, in a hundred years from now, what do you expect the reader of his work will receive from Mahon's poetry?
GD: He is a poet of posterity in many ways. His poems deal with futures, afterlives, possible states and virtual realities. In the time we're talking about, he will have met his own time. He will be in his own time and that's a fascinating thing to consider. Mahon will hold up an example to younger writers, as they come along, of how important it is to remember that poetry is about words and not about ambition. It's about creating art out of words, and if for nothing else, that to me is his real significance.
