Derek Mahon Going Home
(for John Hewitt) I am saying goodbye to the trees, The beech, the cedar, the elm The mild woods of these parts Misted with car exhaust And sawdust, and the last Gasps of the poisoned nymphs. I have watched girls walking And children playing under Lilac and rhodendron, And me flicking my ash Into the rose bushes As if I owned the place; As if the trees responded To my ignorant admiration Before dawn when the branches Glitter at first light, Or later on when the finches Disappear for the night; And often thought if I lived Long enough in this house I would turn into a tree Like somebody in Ovid - A small tree certainly But a tree nevertheless - Perhaps befriend the oak, The chesnut and the yew, Become a home for birds, A shelter for the nymphs, And gaze out over the downs As if I belonged here too. a detail from a painting by Basil Blackstraw But where I am going the trees Are few and far between. No richly forested slopes, Not for a long time, And few winking woodlands. There are no nymphs to be seen. Out there you would look in vain For a rose bush; but find

He has worked as an editor, screenwriter, journalist, and lecturer while producing several collections of poetry since his first, Twelve Poems , appeared in 1965. Subsequent collections include Courtyards in Delft The Hunt by Night (1982), and The Hudson Letter The Bacchae: After Euripides (1986). He also edited Modern Irish Poetry (1972) and The Penguin Book of Contemporary Irish Poetry (1990). Poetry by Derek Mahon The Joycentenary Ode Aged twenty-odd, I spent
A night straitched
Between blankets on The cold floor
Of your squat tower,
Gymsoul, my ho head heavy As yonder stone among
Half-empty rosbif
And electricity glasses. There I dreamed
The wholething from
Once upon a time To riverrun, from
Creak of dawn
To crack of doom, And woke to find The scrotum-tightening glittering Like razor-blades. What can I tell you, Jerms, where you straitch In the Flutherin Symatery? What pome of mine might Healp aliviate Youretournal night? What news of the world You loft bihand Widdamuse you now? The goodguise bate The badgoys in Diturrible fright That drove you from Parease to die In switzocclusion, And now we have Emergency fones in coffins As you proposed. Everbaddy reads Your wooks now in Unlimited eruditions; And if you niverwan The Noble Praise, Well, that reflects upon Our precontraceptions About lutherature, and erges Your origeniosity. Poem from The Hudson Letter by Derek Mahon Noon at St. Michael’s Nurses and nuns —
their sails whiter than those
of the yachts in the bay, they come and go
on winged feet, most of them, or in ‘sensible’ shoes.
July, and I should be climbing among stones
or diving, but for broken bones,
from the rocks below. I try to read
a new novel set aside;
but a sword-swift pain
in the left shoulder-blade, the result
of a tumble in Sheridan Square, makes reading difficult. Writing you can do in your head. It starts to rain on the sea, suddenly dark, the pier, the gardens and the church spires of Dun Laoghaire. You would think it was suddenly October as smoke flaps, the yachts tack violently and those caught in the downpour fun for cover. But in a few minutes the sun shines again, the leaves and hedges glisten as if with dew in that fragrant freshness after rain when the world seems made anew before confusion, before pain; and I think of you, a funny-face but solemn, with the sharpest mind I know, a thoughtful creature of unconscious grace bent to your books in the sun or driving down to New York for an evening on the town.

Derek Mahon The Yellow Book Country Meath, Ireland: The Gallery Press (1997). Reviewed by Philip Coleman, Trinity College, Dublin
Philip Coleman is presently writing a Ph.D. thesis at Trinity College, Dublin about the poetry of John Berryman. He was recently awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study Berryman's manuscripts at the University of Minnesota at St. Paul.
Derek Mahon has always been a poet of the dawn. One might recall as important examples of Mahon's matutinal musings "Derry Morning," "Craigvara House," or "The Dawn Chorus," but perhaps the most significant example of all is his fine verse-letter to the Kinsale-based poet Desmond O'Grady, "The Sea in Winter." In a sense, "The Sea in Winter" offers itself as an important precursor to Mahon's most recent work, a body which clearly characterises the poet as a (verse-)letter-writing insomniac, one who knows "[. . .] the curious sense / of working on the circumference / the midnight oil, familiar sea, / elusive dawn epiphany," ("The Sea in Winter"). In The Yellow Book , published in October 1997, Mahon is burning the midnight oil again, "wide-eyed in an attic room behind the shore." (I, "Night Thoughts"). A peculiar yet discernible dialectic is set up in this poem as in many of Mahon's poems which situates the poet "in an attic next the sky" ("Landscape"), at a ponderous distance from some elusive company beyond the "familiar" sea. And yet, for all that separation and estrangement, as Mahon puts it in "The Sea in Winter," "distance is the vital bond":

    Collections
... Collections Preface The Special Collections Department of the Woodruff Library has extensive book and manuscript holdings related to the Irish literary renaissance and to contemporary Irish poetry. The department's W.B. Yeats Collection includes manuscripts of poems and plays, personal correspondence, photographs of Yeats and his family, as well as many published works with corrections in Yeats' hand. Other members of the Yeats circle represented in the department's collections include: Maud Gonne, Lady Gregory, T. Sturge Moore, and Lennox Robinson. The Abbey Theatre Collection and the Cuala Press Collection further document the cultural flowering in Ireland in the early years of this century. A second area of strength is in contemporary Irish poetry. The department houses the personal papers of several members of the "Belfast Group," that informal gathering of young poets who, in the 1960s, met regularly to read their work at the home of Philip Hobsbaum and later Seamus Heaney. Among these poets are Ciaran Carson, Michael Longley, Paul Muldoon, Frank Ormsby, and James Simmons; in addition, the department also holds the papers of Peter Fallon, Thomas Kinsella, Derek Mahon, Medbh McGuckian, and a small, but important, collection of papers related to Seamus Heaney. Most recently, the library has acquired the papers of the contemporary Irish novelist Edna O'Brien.
