Play Corrugated Roads Part 3 Over the last few columns, I've been working through various reasonable theories about what causes corrugations in the road. I've paid attention to these theories, because they have been devised by people who drive on corrugated roads every day, and have made keen observations that eventually led to a theory. These theories include the tiny road bumps making the wheel bounce (with a nod to the effects of suspension, vehicle weight and wheelbase), the vibrations from the engine (didn't like that theory much), and the effect of hard acceleration. But I was especially impressed by the Turnbull Family, who did experiments on their 3-kilometre airstrip with a 4WD, a 2WD and a semi-trailer (nope, they didn't test a bulldozer). They ran each vehicle 10 times along their airstrip. They put each vehicle through acceleration, cruise, and slow breaking. Why did they do this? Vargas Llosa las als Junge Karl May Frankfurt (Reuter) - Seine erste Begegnung mit der deutschen Literatur fand im Wilden Westen Nordamerikas und in den arabischen Wüsten statt: Mario Vargas Llosa las als Junge die Abenteuergeschichten von Karl May. "Nicht Karl Marx, Karl May", betont der diesjährige Friedenspreisträger des Deutschen Buchhandels auf einer Pressekonferenz vor der feierlichen Preisvergabe in der Frankfurter Paulskirche. Der Hinweis kommt nicht von ungefähr. Denn der 60jährige Lateinamerikaner ist wie kaum ein Schriftsteller politisch engagiert. Ein Erzdemokrat Vargas Llosa wurde am 28. März 1936 im peruanischen Arequipa geboren. Er wuchs in Cochabamba in Bolivien und im peruanischen Piura auf. In Lima besuchte er die Kadettenanstalt. Die Erfahrungen aus dieser Zeit faßte er in dem Roman "Die Stadt und die Hunde" zusammen, mit dem er erstmals international bekannt wurde. Das Buch wurde 1962 in Madrid veröffentlicht. 1964 wurde es in Lima öffentlich verbrannt und Vargas Llosa vorübergehend inhaftiert. Vargas Llosa studierte Jura und Literatur und arbeitete zeitweise als Journalist für peruanische Zeitungen. Inzwischen lebt er meist in Barcelona und in London. In seinen zwölf Romanen verarbeitet er häufig persönliche Erfahrungen. So geht es in "Tante Julia und der Kunstschreiber" um seine Heirat mit einer Tante, der besagten Julia, von der er sich später wieder scheiden ließ. Eines seiner jüngsten Werke ist "Tod in den Anden".

The findings by two National Science Foundation-funded researchers are scheduled for publication in the Dec. 10 issue of Science Two research teams, led by David M. Karl from the University of Hawaii and John C. Priscu of Montana State University, examined fragments of ice taken from roughly 3,600 meters (11,700 feet) below the surface about 120 meters (393 feet) above the interface of ice and suspected water. Both teams found bacteria in "accreted" ice, or ice believed to be refrozen lake water. The teams conclude that a potentially large and diverse population of bacteria may be present in the lake. If so, this bacteria answers an intriguing scientific question about whether an extremely cold, dark environment which is cut off from a ready supply of nutrients can support life.

According to a story in the Times of London, Albright's father, Czech diplomat Josef Korbel, stole paintings worth millions of dollars, along with antique furniture and silver, from the house of an ethnic German who left Prague as World War II drew to a close. Cracroft Karl May's German-language novel of the American West has been a perennial favorite in Europe since its release in 1892. The story of the German-born frontiersman "Old Shatterhand" and his Apache companion "Winnetou" in the western plains and mountains has been reprinted innumerable times, made into films and plays, and has inspired musical compositions. Today in Germany, Old West enthusiasts by the tens of thousands attend outdoor "Karl May" festivals each summer. Yet, despite Karl May's immense popularity in Europe, this prolific author of adventure fiction is virtually unknown in the United States and Canada. May's writing has shaped a European vision of the post-Civil War American West - one uniquely Teutonized by his prolific pen. Interestingly enough, May did not visit the United States until late in life, in 1908 - long after his most popular western stories were published. In this WSU Press edition, David Koblick's excellent translation and abridgment puts the best-known novel by Karl May into the hands of an English speaking audience.
