The Merril Collection Judith donated her collection of 5000 SF books to the Toronto Public Library in 1970. First named "The Spaced Out Library", the name was changed to " The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy " in 1990. By 1995 the collection had grown to 54,000 items. "Judith Merril"
An occasional writer, noted primarily as an anthologist, working for a time as editor at Bantam Books. Judy was associated with the later group of New York Futurians about the time she met Fred Pohl...they were married briefly. Judy almost always attended, even directed, the SF writer's gatherings at Milford, PA. Merril's anthologies (56-68) of the year's best Science Fiction set the standards followed later by Terry Carr and Donald A. Wollheim. She relocated to Canada during the Viet-Nam war as a personal protest. Judy presented the Toronto Public Library with her book collection which has become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation, and Fantasy. Merril was the given name of Judith's first daughter and she adopted "Judith Merril" as a pen name. Later, she had her name legally changed to that.

From Spider Robinson: As you may know, Judith Merril left the party, Friday night. (Sept. 12, 1997) Heart failure at home. We've lost a first-rate writer, anthologist, tv and radio documentarist, organizer, tireless shit-disturber, and seminal figure in the history of both Rochdale and the Writers Union of Canadanot to mention the honest-to-God Mother of Canadian Science Fiction. ("That only a mother...") The following is a speech I delivered at a Harbourfront public tribute to "Judith Merril, Woman of the Future" in October 1992. (Other speakers included Frederik Pohl, Samuel R. Delany and Michael Moorcock. Judith was present, and tickled pink.) Judith Merril, Planetary Treasure a speech delivered at Harbourfront, Toronto Ontario, October 1992 by Spider Robinson Listening to some of the things that have been said here tonight about Judith Merril, I'm reminded powerfully of the recent outpouring of stories about Isaac Asimov from those who loved him...which ran in the issue of Locus that carried his obituary. Too often we wait to praise and honour people we love, until they're not around to hear us. My thanks to Greg Gatenby and Harbourfront for organizing this event BEFORE its honouree became, in the vernacular, existence-challenged.
