Peter Michelson Pater Noster "Either way," he grinned, "you're Nearer My God to Thee." "That's Protestant property," I said, "don't sully it with Papal bull." That's where I was when he cruised through a red light. He had got understandably confused, and instead of depressing the brake pedal with his foot, he was hauling on its rein and cussing like a teamster. Fortunately, we didn't hit anyone. Unfortunately, there was a cop at the intersection watching with a certain disbelief as we drifted past like a houseboat. "I think he wants us to stop," I said. I was laughing pretty hard. "What the hell do you think I want," Pater said. He was still trying to sort Out the braking functions. "Well, see what you can do," I cackled. "I don't think we can outrun him." "Can the jokes." "I’ll see what I can do. Meanwhile, try the brake." "Well now, boys," he said, "would you be going to a funeral . . . perhaps your own?" I attempted to look contrite. Pater assumed the solemn manner I imagined him having in the confessional. The cop studied Pater's license a moment. "McGinnis, is it," the cop said. Distinct approbation for a son of the old sod. "Well then, McGinnis, you weren't in much of a hurry, but you weren't paying attention either." "A little problem with the brake, officer," Pater said.

STANFORD In the cosmic playground of the astrophysicist, where time and distance become incomprehensible, and the things that go bump in the night are indescribable, it is very difficult to know directly if the theories are right. No one can do a controlled cosmological experiment - we can't crash galaxies together or make stars collapse. Scientists using NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), part of which was designed and built at Stanford, may not have all the answers, but they have produced a series of mind-bending questions that have sent theoreticians back to their computer models. They have found, among other things, that a well-known curiosity, once thought easily explained, is phenomenologically incomprehensible. "It's just wonderful," said Stanford Physics Professor Peter Michelson. "I don't mean to be hard on theoreticians, but sometimes you have to wonder about them." Michelson is the Stanford co-investigator for the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET), one of four devices on the CGRO, an earth-orbiting unmanned observatory designed to study gamma ray sources in space. EGRET was the brainchild of the late Nobel Laureate Robert Hofstadter of Stanford, who died less than a year before the orbiting observatory was launched in April 1991.

Another Day Done Gone Tonight's news is that a 17 year old girl politely told the president that more nukes is not less and even if by some odd calculus they were they're still a bad idea. The president politely commended her for exercising her freedom of speech but reminded her that that freedom had the corollary responsibility of being right, which she obviously was not. Thank god we live in America. Because in Russia today, as the newscast pointedly reported, the entire Supreme Soviet voted for a nuclear freeze. As usual, there were no dissenting votes. from When the Revolution Really A Possibly Salutary Application of Chinese Jurisprudence According to the principle In the Beginning was the Praxis the Chinese do not define some crimes as contradictory to the commonweal until they¹ve been objectified in practice. Then the miscreant¹s retroactively in hazard, a perhaps capricious billet and often also fatal. When they convict a malefactor of capital offense on Tuesday morning his ashes are in the mail to next of kin by Tuesday afternoon. The exemplary effect of such expeditious justice is possibly immoderate, but not without its uses. Athenians tried it out on Socrates for little more than sophisticated adroitness. Its employment back home might make executives think twice before peddling to the public that more is less of anything. especially ballistics. from When the Revolution Really

Background: Bacterial pneumonia with associated pleural empyema is the most common cause of pleural effusion found in the pediatric population. Parapneumonic effusions are predominately exudative and occur in as many as 50-70% of patients admitted with a complicated pneumonia. The pulmonary infections of these patients extend into the pleural space and require more extensive therapy with associated increased morbidity and extended hospital stay. Involvement of the pleural space with pulmonary infections has been recognized since ancient times. Aristotle identified the increased morbidity and mortality associated with empyema and described drainage of empyema fluid with incision. The practice of surgical drainage as part of therapy for empyema has continued into the era of modern medicine. In his 1901 text, The Principles and Practice of Medicine
