Susanna Moodie (1803-1885)
Susanna Moodie was a prolific writer of poetry, short stories, articles and novels, but is best known for Roughing It in the Bush , a personal narrative of her immigration to the Canadian wilderness that has become a Canadian literary classic. Born Susanna Strickland near Bungay, Suffolk, England, on December 6, 1803, she was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Homer Strickland. In 1808, the family moved to Reydon Hall, near Southwold in Suffolk. Thomas Strickland conscientiously educated his six daughters and two sons, stressing discipline, self-reliance and practicality. A large library provided the children with literary and imaginative stimulus, and from their childhood, the Strickland sisters were drawn to theatre, poetry and history. Following their father’s death in April 1818, they earned much-needed income by writing natural history, moral and historical tales for children, and sketches, stories and poems for periodicals and annuals. Indeed, all but one of the Strickland sisters made a career of writing. The eldest sisters, Elizabeth and Agnes, achieved fame and social prominence in England as co-authors of Lives of the Queens of England (1840-1848) and other biographies of the British aristocracy. Jane Margaret Strickland specialized in moral tales and histories, while Susanna, along with her sister Catharine (as Catharine Parr Traill) and their brother Samuel Strickland, gained recognition as recorders and interpreters of pioneering and settling in early-19th-century Upper Canada.

    Susanna Moodie
Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill are two of Canada's most important 19th-century writers. Born in England only 23 months apart, the two sisters became professional writers before they married. In 1832 they emigrated with their Scottish husbands to Canada, settling in the backwoods of what is now Ontario, near present-day Lakefield. They recorded and interpreted their experiences as pioneers in books for which they remain famous to this day - for example, Catharine Parr Traill's The Backwoods of Canada (1836) and Canadian Crusoes (1852), and Susanna Moodie's Roughing It in the Bush (1852) and Life in the Clearings (1853). They continued to live and write in Canada until their deaths - Susanna's in 1885 and Catharine's in 1899. [© National Library of Canada. Adapted from National Library of Canada's website Browse

"The Casket of Truth": the Social Significance of Susanna Moodie's Spiritual Dilemmas
By John Thurston "A Message From The Dead" In 1881 Susanna Moodie "had a strange visit" from a woman who had "a message from the dead" for her. This message is from an old friend who had died four years earlier, and to whom Moodie had written a poem in 1827. Thoughts of what "a wonderful photographer memory is," imprinting "images . . . on the heart and brain" which must have some purpose, flood over her, and she recalls another old friend, Anna Laura Harral, to whom she had also addressed poems in 1827. Anna, who had died in 1830, had already sent Moodie messages from the dead. Kate Fox delivered the first of these, through the medium of spirit rapping which she had discovered with her sister. Her truly strange visit in 1855 opened the channels of this medium for Moodie. Moodie's repeated partings from loved ones left her with life-long emotional and spiritual yearnings. Emigration was the consequence of an early severance from her father in 1818 who had, before he died, been parted from his money. Indeed, all her social and spiritual dilemmas were largely due to this message from the dead about the separation of the family from their gentry status. Before his downfall, Thomas Strickland had educated his eldest daughters, Elizabeth and Agnes, in a way befitting their newly-risen social position.

Margaret Atwood’s “The Journals of Susanna Moodie"
by R. P. Bilan The Journals of Susanna Moodie My claim, however, that this book is tightly organized, and that to understand it properly one must take full account of the structure, seems to be denied by Atwood herself. In her interview with Graeme Gibson in Eleven Canadian Novelists Atwood explains how she wrote this series of poems: While this work may not have been written like a novel, it does focus on a central character and is tied to a chronological sequence showing her growth. Moreover, even assuming this is an accurate account of the way Atwood wrote the poems, once she had written them she obviously made a very careful arrangement. And despite what she says in the interview, her comments in the Afterword suggest a clear enough pattern and organization in the book. cause of her separation from the land. Her initial commitment is to all those things associated with light: civilization, reason, order. Only as she comes to accept the darker side of herself, and of nature, will she be able to change and grow. In The Journals of Susanne Moodie Surfacing comes to realize, beyond the realm of logic, reason, and civilized order.

Reconstructing the Wilderness: Margaret Atwood's Reading of Susanna Moodie
By Susan Johnston The literary relation between Atwood's The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970), and Susanna Strickland Moodie's 1852 sketches of immigrant life, Roughing It in the Bush, or, Forest Life in Canada has been the subject of a number of critical analyses, many of which adopt the heuristic metaphors of "violent duality" and "paranoid schizophrenia" that Atwood applies to Moodie in the "Afterword". This Afterword has had an effect on Moodie and Atwood criticism very similar to that described by Anna Balakian as "false influence," in which a model text is distorted or transformed by a new text which illuminates the model text and inspires followers. So powerful is Atwood's reconstruction that not only most interpretations of The Journals of Susanna Moodie, but many independent discussions of Roughing It in the Bush as well, have succumbed to its lure. A new reading of this literary relation seems called for, one which considers Atwood's response to Moodie in terms of the creative relation Moodie achieved, by accepting and resisting inherited European aesthetics, with the wilderness landscape of colonial Canada. Such a reading is suggested by Atwood's poetic concern with the relationship of Canadians to their own landscape, and by the explicit stance of her criticism: "For the members of a country or culture, shared knowledge of their place, their

Upon their arrival in Upper Canada in 1832, the Moodies and Traills disembarked at Cobourg. From 1832 to 1834 the Moodies attempted to farm a previously cleared property near Port Hope. Susanna bore two more children during those years. John's financial speculations, along with the need to hire help for the young family and the farm, were quickly reducing their savings. Moreover, they found their Yankee neighbours unfriendly and unhelpful. So they sold their first farm and moved to the bush near Lakefield, where the Traills had built their log home and cleared their first few acres with the help of Samuel Strickland. Top of Page
