Biography
Paul Muldoon
Writer Ireland Born
Paul Muldoon was born in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, in 1951. His mother was a teacher and his father a labourer. He grew up near the Moy, a village in an area called Collegelands. He learned Irish language and music in school, and encountered TS Eliot and The Faber Book of Modern Verse which he 'more or less learned off by heart.' He started writing his first poetry at 17, mostly in Irish, but when he went to Queen's University, Belfast in 1969 to study English, he went over to writing in that language, feeling his command of Irish was less than he would like.
After working at BBC Belfast as a radio and TV producer he moved to the USA in the mid-1980s. He now lives there with his wife - the novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz - and their two children. He is Howard GB Clark Professor of the Humanities and Creative Writing at Princeton University where, since 1990, he has also been the director of the Creative Writing Programme.
Muldoon won the Sir Geoffrey Faber Memorial Award in 1991, the TS Eliot Award for 'The Annals of Chile' in 1994, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature in 1996, and, most recently, the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for his 'New Selected Poems'. He is president of the Poetry Society and in May 1999 was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford.

Muldoon, Paul The Birth
Genre Poem Keywords Childbirth Father-Daughter Relationship Parenthood Pregnancy Summary "The Birth", appropriately, is the last of the three birth-cycle poems in The Annals of Chile, Muldoon's latest collection. The three together (all annotated in this databasesee "Sonogram" and "Footling" ) celebrate three aspects of the gestation and delivery of the poet's new daughter. Beginning with the poet's donning a scrub suit ("lime-green scrubs"), the poem quickly explodes into a festive pyrotechnics that reminds one of Gerard Manley Hopkins and Joyce: ". . . the windlass-women ply their shears / and gralloch-grub / for a footling foot, then, warming to their task, / haul into the inestimable / realm of apple-blossoms and chanterelles and damsons / and eel-spears. . . . " It takes courage and skill to carry off such a verbal tour de force but Muldoon aptly does so, charging the poem with the newness, sheer power of wonder, and joy of loving a thing for itself that his daughter's birth means to him. This is a joyous poem that can almost visibly demonstrate to students how poetry gets its job done. It may even make more than a few try their hand.

Muldoon, Paul Sonogram
Genre Poem Keywords Childbirth Father-Daughter Relationship Parenthood Pregnancy Summary This is the first of three poems (all annotated in this database) chronicling events that culminate in the arrival of the poet's new daughter. The second, "Footling" , relates her in utero reluctance to sally forth; the last, "The Birth" , is a verbal Fourth of July celebrating the birth of Dorothy Aoife Korelitz Muldoon. "Sonogram" is a three-stanza, eight-line image of the sonogram and the images it suggests. It reminds one of Pound's famous Metro poem for its sheer economy and pictorial power. Search The Guardian Profile: Paul Muldoon The poet at play Widely considered to be the greatest poet of his generation, he has been inspired by his childhood in Northern Ireland and the Troubles. But, say some critics, the work of the Oxford professor of poetry is too wilfully obscure. Robert Potts Robert Potts
Guardian Saturday May 12, 2001
The first meeting between Seamus Heaney and the 17-year-old Paul Muldoon has bred a number of apocryphal tales. Muldoon was said to have sent some poems to Heaney, asking, "What's wrong with these?", to which the future Nobel Laureate apparently replied, "Nothing". In another account, Heaney is alleged to have said: "Muldoon has nothing to learn from me; I may have something to learn from him." As Muldoon himself recalls the encounter, his teacher, Jerry Hicks, introduced him to Heaney with the words, "This is the boy who'll be even better than you", which, as Muldoon says, "was inappropriate and very embarrassing". Hicks then added in a stage whisper: "Rara avis." Today Muldoon cheerfully says: "I don't know whether I'm an odd bird, but that's for others to decide. As are most things."

Before Paul Muldoon wrote his new poem, we asked him how he might draw inspiration from some aspect of Shelley's Ozymandias . He said he wanted to write a very personal poem about "a moment of heartbreak in his life" and a mood of utter desolation.
