Omar Khayyam was born at Naishapur in Khorasan (north-east province of Iran) in the latter half of the eleventh century (probably, A.D. 1048), and died within the first quarter of the twelfth century (probably, A.D. 1123). Omar Khayyam is the most famous Persian astronomer, mathematician and poet. His Robaiyyat is translated to more than 40 languages. Nishapur. He was called Khayyam [tentmaker] probably because of his father's occupation. The details of his life are mostly conjectural, but he was well educated and became celebrated as the outstanding mathematician of his time. As astronomer to Sultan Malik Shah, he was one of a group that undertook to reform the calendar. Their work led to the adoption of a new era, the so-called Jalalian or Seljuk era, beginning Mar. 15, 1079. Although he wrote a number of important mathematical studies, Omar's fame as a scientist has been greatly eclipsed in the West by the popularity of his Rubaiyat

(Nishapur c. 1050- Nishapur 1122) Persian mathematician and poet.
Omar Khayyam ('Omar the tentmaker') was educated as a mathematician and astronomer, and worked at the royal court as astronomer. His works on algebra and geometry gave him an elevated position in his own time.
In 1077 he issued an important work that solved problems with the mathematics of Euclid, problems mathematicians in Europe managed to solve only 5-600 years later. From 1074 to 1079 Khayyam worked on a reform of the calendar system. The new system was used until 1925 in Persia (now Iran
It is for his poetry that he now is best remembered, collected in Rabayat , even if it now is believed that a large part of the 1,000 four-line stanzas cannot be attributed to him. Omar Khayyam's fame in the West came with the paraphrase by the British Edward Fitzgerald in 1859. The true Rabayat , the Iranian one, has poems covering four subjects:

The first edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam The verses (Rubaiyat) of Omar Khayyam have been enormously influential in many peoples' thoughts since publication of their 'translation' in 1859 by Edward FitzGerald. Their mixture of cynicism and hope, of exaltation by turns of both intellect and senses, has meant that the verses are often quoted aphoristically. They are in any case largely independent. One, Verse LI of this version, has become famous. It is an excellent encapsulation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Edward FitzGerald and the translation of the Rubaiyat It is widely recognised that the 'translation' that FitzGerald made had about it a good deal of FitzGerald himself. The first verse is entirely his own invention, and as to the rest: "It must be admitted that FitzGerald took great liberties with the original in his version of Omar Khayyam." So wrote W Aldis Wright, who edited a version of the Rubaiyat for Macmillan in 1962. There is no definitive list of rubaiyat that can be attributed to Omar; the Sufi Trust has published a parallel Arabic/English version with over 400 quatrains, for example. From the point of view of enjoyment, therefore, not of scholarship, the first FitzGerald version is given. A four-column version of the Rubaiyat showing the changes between the versions can be found at Richard Brodie's site Omar Khayyam Omar Khayyam was born in Naishapur in Khorassan, Persia, in ther latter half of the eleventh century. Very little is known about him; he was active in astronomy and in calendar reform, and wrote a treatise on algebra. His family name means 'tentmaker'. He died probably in 1123.

"He goes on to state, that years passed by, and both his old school-friends found him out, and came and claimed a share in his good fortune, according to the school-day vow. The Vizier was generous and kept his word. Hasan demanded a place in the government, which the Sultan granted at the Vizier's request; hut discontented with a gradual rise, he plunged into the maze of intrigue of an oriental court, and, failing in a base attempt to supplant his benefactor, he was disgraced and fell. After many mishaps and wanderings, Hasan became the head of the Persian sect of the Ismailians Assassin , which they have left in the language of modern Europe as their dark memorial, is derived from the hashish , or opiate of hemp-leaves (the Indian bhang "When Malik Shah determined to reform the calendar, Omar was one of the eight learned men employed to do it, the result was the

Statue of Omar Khayyam mar Khayyam lived between 1044 and 1123 A.D. and his full name was Ghiyath al-Din Abul Fateh Omar Ibn Ibrahim Khayyam. Omar Khayyam was an outstanding mathematician and astronomer. He was also well known as a poet, philosopher, and physician. In the "History of Western Philosophy", Bertrand Russell remarks that Omar Khayyam was the only man known to him who was both a poet and a mathematician. Omar Khayyam reformed the solar calendar in 1079 A.D. His work on Algebra was highly valued throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.Apart from being a scientist, Khayyam was also a well-known poet. In this capacity, he has become more popularly known in the Western world since 1839, when Edward Fitzgerald published an English translation of his Rubaiyat (quatrains). This has since become one of the most popular classics of world literature. It should be appreciated that it is practically impossible to exactly translate any literary work into another language, what to talk of poetry, especially when it involves mystical and philosophical messages of deep complexity. Despite this, the popularity of the translation of Rubaiyat would indicate the wealth of his rich thought.

    Introduction
Omar Khaiyyam was born at Naishapur in Khorassan in 1038 and died 1241. He lived under the patronage of the Vizier of that time, Nizam-ul-Mulk “busied,” said the Vizier, “in winning knowledge of every kind, and especially in astronomy, wherein he attained to a very high pre-eminence.” Omar (or Umar) was a mathematician as well as an astronomer and contributed to the reform of the Muslim calendar. According to some accounts he left his academic studies to take up Sufic training under a Sheik or teacher. It may have been at this time that he wrote the verses that Edward Fitzgerald found and translated some seven centuries later. Fitzgerald’s Rubaiyyat of Omar Khaiyyam was very well received as an English poem, but Persian writers have expressed concern about the distortions he introduced by his very free and selective translation. Fitzgerald spoke of his work as a “transmogrification” and mentioned that he “mashed” together verses. His poem stressed living for the day, because of the impossibility of understanding the universe. It emphasized the immensity of space and time and the insignificance of man, and advocated shared friendship and conviviality, particularly the vinous delights of the tavern. Independent of whether the words have a secret meaning known only to initiates
