    Paine, Thomas (1737-1809)
English-born radical political writer who sailed for Philadelphia in 1774 and subsequently argued for American independence. After serving with the American army, he returned to England in 1787 and wrote in support of the French Revolution. Arraigned for treason, he fled to Paris but was imprisoned for offering the French king asylum in the USA. While incarcerated he wrote The Age of Reason (1793) in which he argued aggressively that Christianity and pluralism were incompatible: . . . to believe that God created a plurality of worlds at least as numerous as what we call stars, renders the Christian system of faith at once little and ridiculous and scatters it in the mind like feathers in the air. The two beliefs cannot be held together in the same mind; and he who thinks that he believes in both has thought but little of either. See Christian doctrines and pluralism

The court did not agree and found him guilty. Two editions are fairly scarce, two are very rare; this is one of the scarce editions.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Paine, Thomas English left-wing political writer. He was active in the American and French revolutions. His pamphlet Common Sense (1776) ignited passions in the American Revolution others include The Rights of Man (1791) and The Age of Reason (1793). He advocated republicanism, deism, the abolition of slavery, and the emancipation of women. Paine, born in Thetford, Norfolk, was a friend of US scientist and politician Benjamin Franklin and went to America in 1774, where he published several republican pamphlets and fought for the colonists in the revolution. In 1787 he returned to Britain. The Rights of Man is an answer to the conservative theorist Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France . In 1792, Paine was indicted for treason and escaped to France, to represent Calais in the National Convention. Narrowly escaping the guillotine, he regained his seat after the fall of Robespierre. Paine returned to the USA in 1802 and died in New York.

Thomas Paine Papers ca.1692-1921 Col. Richard Gimbel Collection
(176 items, 0.75 linear feet) B P165 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract Thomas Paine was an important 18th century political thinker and a leading figure of the American Revolution. In spite of his humble background and lack of formal education, his reasoned and persuasive writings not only influenced nascent American ideology, but profoundly affected the perception of government in England and France as well. His three most influential works are Common Sense The Rights of Man (1791-1792), and The Age of Reason (1794, 1795, 1807). This collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Richard Gimbel (1898-1970). It nonetheless contains some significant documents. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand Of special note are Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for Common Sense
