B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Robert B(rown) Parker (1932-) American mystery writer, whose famous character is the Boston-based private eye Spenser, a man of honor. Parker introduced his wisecracking and literate hero in The Godwulf Manuscript in 1973. Spenser has dominated the scene of traditional private detectives ever since, and although he has become older during the series, he is still the toughest and bravest of them all. "I walked back across the park and crossed Fifth Avenue and turned uptown. There was a plate glass window on the Hotel Pierre and I checked my reflection as I went by. I was wearing a leather jacket and a blue-toned Allen Solly tattersall shirt and jeans, and Nike running shoes with a charcoal swoosh. I paused and turned the collar up on my leather jacket. Perfect. Did the traffic slow on of Fifth Avenue to look at me? Maybe." (from Taming a Sea-Horse Robert B. Parker was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He received his B.A. from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and served then two years with the U.S. Army in Korea. In 1957 Parker earned his M.A. in literature from Boston University. Between the years 1957 and 1962 he worked in industry as a technical writer and in advertising business. In 1962 Parker began his sixteen-year academic career. Parker earned his Ph.D. in literature from Boston University in 1971. His dissertation was entitled "The Violent Hero, Wilderness Heritage and Urban Reality: A Study of the Private Eye in the Novels of

Newest published book is SHRINK WRAP. Recently named grandmaster for lifetime achievement by Mystery Writers of America, Robert B. Parker had already assumed the mantle of the dean of American crime fiction. His novels featuring the wise-cracking, street-smart Boston private-eye Spenser have earned him a devoted following and reams of critical acclaim, typified by R. W. B. Lewis's comment in The New York Times Book Review , "We are witnessing one of the great series in the history of the American detective story." His 26 Spenser novels have sold millions of copies. FAMILY HONOR, his latest novel, was expressly written for Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt who will play Sunny Randall, his first female protagonist, and also a Boston-based private-eye. Parker's other works include the classic POODLE SPRINGS, a novel completed from an unfinished manuscript begun by the late Raymond Chandler, and PERCHANCE TO DREAM, the sequel to Chandler's THE BIG SLEEP. Ironically, Parker wrote about Chandler in a chapter of his doctoral thesis about the evolution of the American Hero, beginning with the colonial period and ending with the twentieth century mystery writers. As fate would have it, Parker has become one of the best of them: "Robert B. Parker has taken his place beside Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross Mac Donald," according to

Gabrielle Lord on Jaws by Peter Benchley THE SAD DECLINE OF ROBERT B. PARKER Parker's preparation for a career as a writer of hard-boiled detective novels could scarcely have been better. He served in the army, worked in the insurance business and in advertising before becoming a university teacher. His PhD dissertation was a study of the work of Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald. His character, the Boston PI Spenser, who first appeared in The Godwulf Manuscript in 1973, is a direct descendant of Chandler's Phillip Marlowe. Parker makes no bones about this, admitting that the naming of the character is a piece of homage to Chandler. Chandler's original name for Marlowe was Malory, after the fifteenth century poet; hence Spenser after the sixteenth century poet. The first six Spenser books, down to and including Looking for Rachel Wallace, were extremely good. The plots were lean and pacy, the characters and settings well-drawn and the `themes' - drugs, sports, teenagers, feminism etc. - were deftly handled. Above all, Parker showed himself to be a master of witty dialogue, specifically the one-liner. In Looking for Rachel Wallace, after Hawk, the fearsome black enforcer, tells Spenser about his romance with an Ivy League philosophy professor, Spenser responds with: `How'd you get along with her seeing-eye dog?' In The Judas Goat, Spenser, in London, gets the drop on a would-be hit man.

Robert B. Parker is one of contemporary fiction's most popular and most respected detective novelists. Best known for his portrayal of the tough but erudite private investigator Spenser, Parker has written over twenty five novels over the course of his writing career, beginning with 1973's The Godwulf Manuscript. That novel introduced Spenser, who would be featured in over dozens more novels, including God Save The Child (1974), Mortal Stakes (1975), Promised Land (1976) and Sudden Mischief (1998).
Parker worked in advertising before earning his PhD in English and American literature with a dissertation on Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and John D. MacDonald. He taught for a time at Northeastern University before launching his career as an author, a career that met with success from the very first submission.
Parker's acclaim and his deep background in classic detective literature helped earn him the somewhat unusual commission of completing a Philip Marlowe novel that the great Chandler had left unfinished. The result, the novel Poodle Springs, was adapted into a film by HBO and starred James Caan as the famous detective. Parker also wrote a sequel to Chandler's classic The Big Sleep entitled Perchance to Dream (1991). Robert B. Parker lives with his wife in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I took a card out of my jacket pocket, handed it to him. "I´m looking for Pam Shepard," I said.
"Where´d she go?" he said.
"If I knew I´d go there and look for her. I was wondering if you could help me."
"Buzz off," he said and turned his stare back at the girls. "I understand you spent the night with her just before she disappeared." "Who says?"

Walk , don't run, to get this new Spenser mystery.
Buy The Book Robert B. Parker has been writing the Spenser series for nearly thirty years now. In that time he has created of the most enduring and popular mystery series; one that has contained its share of hard-boiled classics. It is a career that also, unfortunately, contains its share of duds, with the misfires coming more frequently in recent years. (Not coincidentally, it also comes at a time when Parker is writing three series simultaneously, in addition to stand-alone novels.) Widow's Walk is not a bull's-eye, nor is it a miss; call it somewhere in the three ring.
Spenser has gotten older over the years, a fairly uncommon thing for a series star. (Most of them, it seems, age about as fast as a giant redwood.) It hasn't really slowed him down any; he's still pretty fast with his fists for a guy who must be close to seventy. His near-senior status is reflected, though, is his calm, even dull relationship with his long-time flame Susan. There used to be real spark between those two, but that fire burned out long ago.
Better, as always, is Spenser's relationship with his trusty outlaw partner Hawk. Hawk was the original psychotic sidekick with a heart of gold, and he remains one of the best of the lot. He doesn't have much to do this time out, other than follow Spenser around and make sure nobody kills him, but it's still nice to see what he's up to.

Robert B. Parker (1932 - )
I n Spenser, Robert Parker successfully created a a man who was by turns both tough and sensitive without getting too hard or soft. Spenser just happened to be P.I. Like Ross Macdonald, Parker had an academic background in classic literature background. He'd also been a weightlifter, a cook, an infantryman in Korea, and a copywriter for Prudential and Raytheon before introducing Spenser, the 70s answer to Philip Marlowe. Spenser's first documented case, The Godwulf Manuscript (1973), was admittedly an homage to Marlowe, but flashes of Spenser's contemporary voice and attitude are present. Parker began to mark his territory with the second book, God Save the Child . On the trail of a runaway, Spenser consults high school guidance counselor Susan Silverman. An intelligent, independent woman, Susan is someone Marlowe never encountered, much less dated. Through Susan, Parker shows Spenser to be more "complete" than Marlowe, able to commit himself to something beyond his work. In Promised Land , Spenser has his first published run-in with Hawk, a mob legbreaker who fought on the same card as Spenser "a long time ago." While Susan brought out Spenser's capacity for commitment, Hawk brought out his penchant for violence. By keeping the two sides in conflict, Parker kept Spenser in a moral gray area; never safe, forced to make the best decision in order to remain heroic.
